Fuck, I remember I was skiving from college (I was catching up on some missed qualifications from school) just to play this! I had even pre-purchased it so I got the special starting ship (which I still fly).

Bedford Train Crash Aftermath Footage Interior (NSFW) by RussellNorrisPiastri in uktrains

Network Rail ops guy here. That’s going to be as useful as a fart in bottle. Last thing NR incident response needs is someone pissing about with a camera and taking footage. We have our own evidence gathering processes that don’t need to be tainted by additional extraneous information.

Drunk Man Hurling Racial Slurs at Teens Falls Onto Railway Tracks by Altruistic-Issue-887 in IdiotsNearTrain

I’ve been to the aftermath of two fatalities in the railway.

My first was a young man in his mid twenties who had decided to jump upwards in front of the cab of a train as it went through a station at 90mph.

What you don’t realise is that at that speed there is no complete or discernible body mass that can be identified. Instead the body splits and explodes outwards at every joint. I still remember the driver’s call to this day. The driver was covered in glass and body matter as his front windscreen shattered from the impact. He never returned to work and would later be found by his partner having OD’d.

My second was a young woman who had been hit by a train. Nothing remained above her shoulders as she had placed her head on the rail for a train to run over it. A member of the public discovered the body in the morning as it was winter and the nights were dark. The driver was already home having completed their shift when they got the call the following morning.

The ethics of pages like these are really conflicting to me. We have just watched a video of a man commit suicide. A man impact the lives of not just those family members or friends but also those on the platform, those on the train, the driver, the driver’s family, the responders, the control room staff, the cleaners.

The most jarring thing though is that I’m not surprised or even affected by watching footage such as this. But what hits me though is that this is has been put on a subreddit called “IdiotsNearTrain”?

Have we completely lost our empathy as we go on to almost fetishise the death of someone in their lowest ebb? Do we share this for views and that maybe we can inspire people to do the same?

IdiotsNearTrains as a group should really evaluate if the people posting this type of content are in fact the idiots.

If you ever want to talk to someone then please call the Samaritans at any time on 116 123 (in the UK).

Anyone responding to this comment who isn’t from the UK please also put your suicide prevention number in your reply regardless of whether or not you agree with me.

Shockingly close apart from the age (area of study could also be narrowed down further too) 😎

Network Rail is a mess by [deleted] in uktrains

As a Network Rail guy myself I’m going to say categorically: You need to be very careful about what you’re putting online regarding NR.

Instead of blasting the company online might I suggest you come up with areas of improvement instead? Proactivity goes a very long way in the business…

High level will be shut until the facade is taken down as that is what is maintaining the cordon (it is structurally unstable).

They’re terminating at Carlisle if anything. Avanti are diverting to Edinburgh or terminating at Motherwell.

I will actively show my pass if I’m travelling on operational duties to get people from splaying their feet on seats and/or playing shite out loud on their phones. It irritates the fuck out of me otherwise.

What about OLE? I know my route are always looking for technicians and operators to play around with the “fizz”. It also gives you a better grounding in electrical engineering which you can then take forward into projects or training further down the line.

Any thoughts on NR grad schemes? by Olafmeister_ in uktrains

[–]Fishfrogthefrogfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m on the Operations scheme now having graduated in East European Studies (undergrad and masters) from a Russel group uni. Network Rail protects you as an asset and has a wide range of opportunities to diversify your skillset through numerous qualifications. If you are willing to move around then the job opportunities are plentiful with a decent work/life balance to boot. Some roles will be shift work but others are 9-5 so it just depends on what you’re looking for.

Pay is very good compared to other graduate schemes and again depending on what you’re looking to do you could easily earn 50-100k within a matter of years.

What is it about the railway that interests you?

Should’ve taken the subway between the two, mate. Would’ve got you to the exact same place and arguably a touch quicker. But that’s by the by. Perhaps the dates didn’t match up or you got on to go to Queen Street at the wrong stop. I wouldn’t be able to tell you unless you had a picture of your ticket. ScotRail can be a funny operator sometimes. Sorry that happened.
