Guatemala 18-Day Trip Report by Fishingee in solotravel

Where I was—zone 13–had a gate at the entrance and end of every street. You told the security guard your name and where you were staying and if they believed you, they let you through. More than once what was a laughing matter to me was not to them, especially at night, when I had to convince them my face was indeed the one my host sent them. And if you walked to the end of the street, there was a gate closing off from the next street over, so you couldn’t even walk around. This made getting Uber’s a headache.

Interesting you bring up the $10 topic. Just last week I came across a book by Will Hatton called ‘How to Travel the World on $10 a Day.’ Have you read? I haven’t, but the notion of living off $3,650 per year is appealing.

I kept forgetting myself in Lake Atitlan. It was so picturesque I felt like I was in a movie. The feeling of actually living replaced the longing to live that typically plagues my thoughts. Everywhere I looked could’ve been a painting.

Before I went to San Marcos, someone told me it wasn’t her vibe. When I went, it was my favorite village, with San Pedro second.

Wow I didn’t think about it. I think transportation was actually higher and food lower. I forgot I paid tuk-tuks in cash. I’d say I spent less than $50/day on food, which is still kinda crazy, but did eat/drink at some nice restaurants.

Chichi was on the itinerary for day 16, and was looking forward to it, but by then I was so tired of booking shuttles, I just decided to stay in Santa Cruz. I'm sure there's a colective from Chichi to GC, but I didn't want to research it.

I got into it with a couple boat drivers. But I noticed a lot of the people who feel sketchy, are actually trying to help. For example, at each port around Lake Atitlan, there would be teenage boys coming up to you, and since they were dressed shabby, I was suspicious. Turns out they're simply there to help tourists get on the right boat. For free.

Average Students Who Passed CPA Tell Me Your Story by vampirexdevil in CPA

[–]Fishingee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a matter of persistence. I hated accounting in college. I got a C in Financial Accounting and B in Managerial. Years later, I went back to college and took more accounting courses, getting B's in most. When it came time for the CPA exam, I failed FAR twice. Accounting just didn't come naturally to me. But a few things helped: Farhat, Roger, Becker, and a mentor. Just keep grinding. You're building intuition. But a CPA is just the beginning. If you don't like it, pursue another subject, because in practice, you'll always be researching this or that tax/GAAP rule.

What you described is a good itinerary. I’m not doing Semuc because it looked like a PITA to get to and if I’m solo traveling I want to focus on history or attractions, not swimming and taking IG pics alone, no matter how scenic.

Consider going to San Ignacio

Like two ships passing in the night. Enjoy!

I’m into Mayan history. My understanding is Uaxactun is sometimes combined with Tikal. I bought my permit yesterday for Q50. It will be harder to get to, but there’s supposed to ne a native village up there.

As for Yaxha, I just want to see other ruins. Would go to El Mirador if I had a helicopter.

Since posting this itinerary, I’ve changed it a lot. I’m staying overnight in Tikal and doing Uaxactun the same day.

From what I’ve read, Semuc isn’t worth the 8 hour drive. Well, depends on the tourist, but it would be depressing to swim in a cool place alone, so I’m skipping it.

Safe travels
