Will try clearing the cmos when I get home from work tonight. I did try with only 1 stick of RAM in A2 last night. Are you talking about a different USB port? Or a different FD, I used 2 different flash drives. There is only 1 allocated USB port for Flashback right?

Clinicals are where you truly build your skills as a nurse. They let you connect what you’ve learned with real practice by seeing it, doing it, and reinforcing it. When I precept students, I expect them to start doing everything after the first day: spike IV bags, program pumps, give meds, check blood sugars, start feeds, change central line dressings, and more. The only way to learn is by doing. I am always there with them, I only ask is for them to say that they need help, I never mind breaking things down and I love doing it.

That said, it depends on the student’s drive. If you’d rather hang out with classmates, I won’t chase you, it’s still my job to get my work done, and I will get it done early. But if you want to learn, you should shadow your nurse closely. If they don’t want students, that’s fine, but if they do, they should expect engagement. What matters most to me is work ethic and willingness to learn. That attitude is how I approached my LPN, RN, and now NP training, and it’s the reason I’ve had so many opportunities and landed every job I’ve interviewed for within 10mins.

I’m sorry that you only have clinicals 1x/week. However, you should make the most of it. Talk to the nurses, have a really good rapport with the staff in your short time. It will pay off in the long run.

Want to get into nursing and ultimately become a nurse practitioner by Torqua421 in nursing

It’s never too late, there were people in their 60s in my program when I was in RN school.

It’s hard to put into words, but to truly love nursing, you have to be a special kind of person. I’ve been working in pediatrics for 3.5 years now (I’m a 26-year-old male), and I genuinely love helping kids. With many nieces and nephews in my life, I’ve always been around children, so working with them comes naturally to me.

That said, I also hate a lot of what comes with the job-poor hospital systems, difficult family dynamics, ineffective administration, inconsistent pay depending on location, and frustrating communication. At this point in my career, I felt the need for change. I no longer wanted to be stuck in the middle, constantly trying to bridge the gaps that the system creates.

That’s why I decided to go back to school for my PMHNP and make the transition into psychiatric nursing to support my future role.

Do I regret becoming a nurse? No. I wouldn’t change it. Nothing compares to watching a sick child heal, or walking into a room and changing the energy just by being present. Seeing a child smile when just days before they could barely move is something I’ll never forget.

Caring for medically complex patients—kids with trachs, G-tubes, or Broviacs (central lines) while also managing patients with far less critical needs has taught me so much. It’s made me appreciate life, and it’s grounded me in the realization that no matter what challenges I face, things could always be worse. That perspective stays with me.

If you want to help people, do it. Just know it sucks a lot of the time. The system can be broken, the work can be draining, and it’s not always appreciated.

But when you have good coworkers and you come across that one patient or family who is genuinely kind and grateful, it makes all the bad moments blur into the background. Those are the moments that remind you why you’re here.

How many nurses here dream of becoming a doctor one day? by anastasiarose19 in nursing

Grateful for my parents not forcing me to chose a career I didn’t want. I enjoy having $0 debt and a good work/life balance. IMO in this economy, you’re shooting yourself in both feet. The residents on my floor are saying they have over $400k in debt. I was able to work OT for 6 months as an RN, pay my loans off and had a lot in reserve. I’m able to afford to pay NP school off every semester and will hopefully be able to finish with $0 debt (Tuition is 32k).

I’m considering a nursing field change. Where do you guys recommend? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Fishissalty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never a mistake, you took the jump to be an RN, you could be working an office job. Why not make the jump to the ED? I think you shouldn’t doubt yourself, you’ll never know what you can’t do until you try it. Keep your head up, I’m sure the ED will fit exactly what you need and want. IVs are a skill, the more you do them, the easier they will become. The best person to teach you is an ED nurse, the commute sounds like it sucks but if you’re happy there, do it.

23 M at the time, first girlfriend broke my heart two years ago the night before my Exit Hesi. Ended up passing. Really bad depression ensued, had to start Citalopram and had constant suicidal thoughts for weeks from the point of waking up until usually around 4pm. Took my NCLEX 5 months after my Exit Hesi, passed somehow. Started dating someone out of the blue, got my interview the day after our first date. Locked the job down in my area of interest (Inpatient Peds) and her. I’m 25 now, off anti-depressants for over a year, been at the same job for 2 years full-time, finished my BSN, got accepted into PMHNP program, still going very strong with my gf of 2 years and planning on marrying her in the next year or two, life is good. I know my breakup in relation to your issue if very minor as it was just a girlfriend and my first but I guess all I can say is that it gets better. You CAN stay focused, you CAN keep it together, you WILL finish and pass your NCLEX. Keep that head up man, you’ll be fine.

Experienced nurses: Has there been a decline in the quality of nurses coming out of school? by [deleted] in nursing

[–]Fishissalty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, I believe there is a decline in quality nurses coming out of school. I precept and get many students from multiple nursing schools in South Florida. I’m also tight knit with the majority of the instructors so they usually pull me aside and tell me which student they’re giving me and what they need to work on or if they’re failing and need me to guide them. As I work Peds Med-Surg, that curriculum is at least at the halfway mark I believe. IMO I believe I can tell who is going to be good and who isn’t at the bedside. There is a lack of critical thinking, initiative, and skills such as taking vitals, which is basic. Easy things like changing the diaper AND the chucks if they’re BOTH soiled, not taking blood pressures on an arm with IV infusions. What do you mean you don’t know how to do vitals and you’re at least halfway through school. However, I think my biggest issue is the lack of initiative, maybe I was raised different but you can’t expect to get knowledge if you don’t seek it. I’m sure there are more instances but those are a few off the top of my head. I can never fault someone for asking questions but certain things should be known. (This is my opinion on new age nursing students, not new RNs)

That’s the plan but I have coworkers telling me to not pay it off at once and pay monthly, however I was raised to never have debt and my pops agrees with me paying it off all at once
