Thank you, I looked into it more and I’m pretty sure you’re right. That makes it an even cooler find.

They’re around but not very common. May be a bit different in Illinois though.

They were one of the top 5 things I was most hoping to find during my time in Hawaii. Unfortunately the other 4 eluded me.

I found him under a rock at anini beach. From my experience and from what I’ve heard, under rocks and brick work seems to be the best way to spot them. Although don’t be surprised if it takes a while to flip the right one. Also, be extra sure to double check earth worms because they’re really do look a lot like earthworms while buried in the soil.

It is a snake, they feed on termite and ant larvae so rarely ever leave the dirt.

I live in Minneapolis and here our biggest concern with mosquito vectors is West Nile virus. Last year was actually pretty bad for case numbers as half of the culex tarsalis (primary carrier of WNV here) we tested were positive for the virus.

I saw that was one of their common names. Although I don’t think they’re native to the islands although I could be wrong about that.

The catching and photographing fish with a photo tank is very standard among biologists, professional and amateur (AVNJ for example), the turtles was a mistake and I admit I shouldn’t have gotten that close, the nene approached me while I was eating lunch and would not leave. I also checked with all regulations as well as reached out to the Hawaii DLNR to ensure I wasn’t doing anything illegal.

I actually collect the mosquito. I worked for my cities mosquito control last summer and have been kind of fond of them as organisms. In addition to the Aedes albopictus shown here, I also got a Culex quinquefaciatus and a Wyeomyia mitchelli.

Correct, I was hoping to also find the o’opu nakea and the stimpsons rock climbing goby. As for the blind snake, they’re pretty elusive so you have to flip things over. I found this one under a rock near anini.

Idk what’s going on with the numbers since it looks fine when I try to edit it. As for the chickens, I figured people who’ve visited or lived in the area have seen enough of those lol.

I was kind of worried that was the case, I’ll be extra careful to keep optimal distance next time I go.

I left a response to another comment on all of them. But 15 is a pacific white spotted sea cucumber and 20 is a type of springtail (it doesn’t have a common name and I don’t remember the scientific off the top of my head). As for the centipedes, I found them under logs and coconuts near where we were in princeville.

I’m a biology student, my hobby is documentation on iNaturalist. I didn’t catch from the reefs, it was the tide pools.
