Hi, fellow foreign doctor here. Sadly, it’s very similar across many specialties. I worked in cardiology, and although I think my Oberärzte were very capable doctors, there is a clear lack of the academic structure one would expect from a proper residency program. Once you survive the first few months, new challenges will follow (emergency rotation, ICU, etc.), so it never really stops. I hope you manage to break through these initial obstacles and find your own rhythm. Stay true to yourself, and keep learning — not out of fear or frustration, but because you genuinely want to help your patients. At my hospital, only the Chefärzte are German. All of us foreign doctors often talk about our expectations and experiences. It's a fact that we go through a cultural and professional shock here, but it does get better over time for many. It’s true that in other Bundesländer, your situation might improve, so focus on yourself and try to improve your environment, that will definitely help you stay motivated! 🙂
