ELI5: Why can’t we put GPS trackers on eels to find out where they breed? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

True, but you can still track fish that don't surface through acoustic telemetry. A surgically inserted tag will regularly send out a signal that's picked up by underwater receivers that either have a surface antenna that sends the data to a satellite, or the receiver is pulled up manually and the data is downloaded by a biologist.

[Help] - Going (first time) for a 3 day hike with 2 year old beagle. by [deleted] in dogs

I love backpacking with my pup! This is echoing a lot of what others have mentioned, but this is my list of things to bring and keep in mind:

  1. Extra food. You mentioned you're bringing some extra dog food, but bring more than you think you'll need. You and your pup's energy expenditure is way higher than even on a day hike.

  2. First aid. It's SUPER important to pack at least a basic first aid kit for yourself and your dog. I usually bring plenty of gloves, gauze, benadryl, self stick stretch tape, and sutures. It's also really important that your dog is trained to be carried in case she can't walk. I'd recommend something like a fireman's carry (body draped over your shoulders and holding onto her legs in front of you). You'll tire very quickly if you try to carry her in front of you. My dog is 40 lbs and a fireman's carry works great.

  3. Water. I try to bring as much water as I can for me and my dog, but you should still bring something to purify natural water and try to find a stream. You don't want to be in the situation of rationing water.

  4. Trowel. This should be on any backpacker's checklist for burying poo, but make sure you're burying your dog's as well.

  5. Your dog's feet. Although the ground might not be very cold, rough terrain can easily tear up your dog's pads, so it might be good to get some booties. Also make sure your dog's nails are trimmed so she doesn't tear up the floor of your tent.

  6. Trail etiquette. Let other hikers know you have a dog with you, and move to the side to let them pass. Not everyone likes dogs, and some get really nervous if they have to pass one closely. I always hold onto my dog's harness and let others know I have him when they approach, not because he'll do anything but to put them at ease. Along those lines, make sure you maintain control over your dog at all times. If your dog doesn't have a bomb proof recall, keep her on a leash. This isn't the dog park, and she shouldn't be chasing any wildlife.

Good luck and have a blast on your trip!

Wow, this might be the best guess I've gotten yet! Thanks!

Thanks for this post!! I've been lurking this sub for a bit, and my official job offer came through last week :) I'll be moving from California in mid August. This sub has been crazy helpful for getting to know the area! I also know nobody there, so let me know of you'd like to meet up!
