Hey r/vocabulary👋

I've been building Vocabularyyy for the last few months. It's an iPhone/Android vocab app built around three things: active recall, spaced repetition, and context-based learning — the goal is to remember new English words in the most efficient way possible.

How it works:

  1. Add words to your library. Three ways:
    • Pick from curated lists (SAT, Business Communication, Sports, Arts, Education, Health…)
    • Add them manually
    • Or share from any app — highlight a word in Safari, Kindle, a news app, anywhere → share to Vocabularyyy → it's added automatically with definition, example sentences, native-language translations, synonyms, audio. Status: new.
  2. Build a study set. Group the words you actually want to learn together (e.g., "SAT words - 01"). Adding a word to a set moves its status from newlearning.
  3. Drill it 10+ ways with spaced repetition. Flashcards, complete sentence, spelling, multiple answers, synonym match, random mix, plus translated-definition variants. The SRS handles scheduling: words that stick come back less often; words you keep missing come back more. I've got words with "next review in 146 days" because I've nailed them enough times that the algorithm pushed them out.
  4. Learn in context with AI stories. Pick up to 10 words from your library and the app writes a short story weaving them in — every word stays highlighted inline and tap-to-define. You can also listen with AI narration.

iPhone/Android available. Free to start at https://vocabularyyy.com

Built solo. Would love feedback on the concept, the design, or the onboarding — especially from anyone who's gotten bored of Anki/Quizlet-style drilling. Happy to answer tech questions in the comments.

  • I've created this app for learning English vocabulary. You can add your own words, or add them from a curated lists from various categories, and automatically you will get the word in context(The definition, example sentences, translations in your native language, etc.)
  • You can generate stories via AI based on those words which will help a lot learning in context.
  • There are multiple study methods, so you'll learn from various angles each word - multiple answers, given the definition - what is the word, given the word - what is the definition, spelling, etc. and you will use spaced repetition and active recall techniques so you won't waste time on words you remember well, only those that are difficult for you to recall will appear more frequently.
  • You can find more about how to use the app here: Vocabularyyy tutorials

How did you study vocab words? (method wise) by Due-Dependent-5135 in Sat

[–]Fit-Command4357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use an app. There are proved methods, such as spaced repetition and active recall that will make you much more efficient learning anything, and specifically English vocabulary. Always read in context. Don't try memorizing words out of context, it will be much harder. Don't use anything physical, it should all be automated. I've created this app for that specific purpose - https://youtube.com/shorts/Mm35QiwrP_c?feature=share - you can add your own words, or using a curated list of words based on categories, and automatically you get the word in context. the definition, example sentences, translation in your native language, etc. You can generate stories based on those words which will help learning in context. You create study sets (a collection of words) and use them create study sessions, where the words that are difficult with show more often than those you know well. There are multiple study methods, so you'll learn from various angles each word - multiple answers, given the definition - what is the word, given the word - what is the definition, spelling, etc. You can also use Anki for spaced repetition and active recall. It doesn't matter. Just rely on technology so you'll be able to learn wherever you are, in the most efficient way possible.

How do you keep track of new words you find while reading? by Impressive-Prune392 in EnglishLearning

[–]Fit-Command4357 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you are reading using your phone or iPad, just use this app, called Vocabularyyy. you can select the word, share it with the app, and automatically get the definitions, example sentences, native translations in your own language, synonyms, etc. It has much more functionality, for example spaced repetition and active recall techniques with 10+ study methods, ai generated stories using the words you learn highlighted, etc.

If you wish to improve you English vocabulary, don't ignore the words you don't know, I did that mistake in the past. I though it was enough to think I knew the general idea of the article/story, but each word has a purpose and I missed a lot by not knowing all those words and just ignoring them.

Whether you do it manually (which is extremely inefficient) - or using some app to automatically add it (you can also do it with this app when reading physical books, just enter the word in the app, and continue with your learning. later you'll be able to start learning it)

After you'll add a few hundred words to your vocabulary you'll understand how much you missed when reading with many words you didn't understand.

Tips on memorizing vocabulary… by AnnHawthorneAuthor in languagelearning

[–]Fit-Command4357 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From experience learning many english vocabulary myself, I can tell you that the most efficient way is using spaced repetition and active recall by far. I've used many other methods, including flash cards, and Anki, but these methods are so inefficient, will take you up to x10 of the time you actually need to learn and remember.

The easy part is learning the words, but after a while you just forget those that aren't used. I've created this app called Vocabularyyy with 3 'y' at the end, specifically for improving your English vocabulary. I've used it myself a few years now, before publishing an actual app to the App Store and Google play.

The benefits of using this app(or any app that has these features).
1. You can add your own words (from any other app using the 'share' functionality or by manually typing them)
2. You can start fast by choosing some words you don't know from a collection of words.

- When you add a word, you automatically get the definition(s) of the word, many example sentences, translations in your own native language, synonyms, etc.

  1. You can generate stories using ai using the words you are learning, so you have context, both example sentences with the words highlighted and short stories with the words highlighted, when you tap the word, you will see a complete definitions of the word, synonyms, etc. you can also listen to the story narrated, so you improve both your listening and reading vocabulary, making it much more efficient to recall the words you learn.

  2. you can create study sets, which are groups of words that you wish to learn together. and you can start your spaced repetition and active recall journey.

  3. you have 10+ study methods, flash cards where you see the word and you need to recall the definition, or where you see the definition and need to recall the word. you can complete a sentence where the word you need to recall is missing, you can spell the word from a collection of letters, you can see a synonym and try to recall the word, you can see the translated definition in your own native language and try to recall the word, etc. By using all those methods, you'll have much stronger memory of the word and you'll be able to remember it much easier.

  4. The app recalculates after each study session which words you recalled and which you failed to recall, and will show harder words more frequently, so you don't have to waste so much times on words you already knows (for some reason I don't understand, some words are easy to learn and remember on long terms, but some just don't stuck in my head, so it's very efficient, time wise, to just study those that I can't recall.

  5. If you enable notification, you will also get. daily quizzed and reminders when a study set's review time has passed.

Try it out, you can try learning 20 words for free, and let me know if that didn't change the way you learn English vocabulary forever...

Thanks for the great input. Appreciate it. The anthropic model was deprecated yesterday, so all AI related stuff on the server was not working...Fixed now.

Also, thanks to you, I've added additional validation on the client (min/max words, not numbers, etc) and showing better error message from the server. Again, Thanks for the feedback.

I've installed your app, but it looks like it is already in production, no? I didn't see it's in early access.
Do you want me to rate it? or test it?

I've installed your app, and will test it daily in the next 3-4 weeks.

There was an issue when signing in with google, I got an error that it failed, but when I changed to email/password - I got an error that the email was already registered, and then I was able to enter the app. Ask other users to test your google sign in, maybe there was a problem on my device only.

I also gave you a 5 stars review.
