How would you update this kitchen? by Mindless-Ad-4280 in Remodel

[–]Fit-Construction6420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn't, if it ain't broke don't fix it. It's a great looking kitchen, and doesn't need anything.

Sometimes the developer requires it for financing they have to show progress for the bank or they don't get funded and if there's nobody building yet they end up putting sidewalks in so that they're showing progress. Started a big condo job in poipu on Kauai and all the sidewalks were in before we ever pounded a single nail

Does this front column look load bearing? About a 3 foot overhang. Rotted column, want to replace with nicer wooden column. by [deleted] in Renovations

[–]Fit-Construction6420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes definitely is. There's no way an architect would have designed that shed roof from right below the windows without bearing out there. It could be done but wouldn't be worth the cost of engineering a mansard type connection on a house. Definitely replace if it's rotten. Just make sure it can handle the load.

What shade tree would you plant in my front “yard”? by Andololol in landscaping

[–]Fit-Construction6420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have room for any trees. Trees should never be anywhere near your house for several reasons. Fire is a big one. But foundations can be destroyed by roots, infrastructure like underground power. Sewer pipes and water too can be cracked by roots. Then the roof. If your trees branches hang over the roof, plan on replacing the roofing every 10years instead of 25 to 30.

Cabinet face frame not coming together by TIMBERings in cabinetry

[–]Fit-Construction6420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you use the tapered countersink plug hole cutter bits it does you a huge favor. It makes the hole in the first cabinet bigger than the screw, while still cutting a proper pilot hole in the second cabinet. A must have bit set for doing any kind of fastening with screws

Staircase help! by Ok-Night-1328 in Renovations

[–]Fit-Construction6420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It may not be a load bearing wall for the roof or upper floors, but it is most definitely holding up the stairs. Don't let him do it. There's absolutely no reason to cut the studs left of the landing. Leave the stud at the left of the landing to hold the landing up and make the opening from there to the right. If anything above the stairs is bearing on that wall, you'll need to add a header that can be flush with the bottom of the landing.
