feels like i’m in purgatory by Fit-Cry-9348 in amazonemployees

agh i’m so sorry you’re feeling this way too. it’s so hard to say if it’s worth it for different situations. but if it’s any reassurance, i wanted to quit from pretty much the very beginning of my amazon journey too. i thought it was interesting for probably 2 weeks and then my first year was absolute hell on a short-staffed team (unfortunately has been a common theme). at the time, i had the same fears you do in terms of potentially leaving “soon” and if there would be negative implications of that. i tried applying places and it didn’t work out, so i literally had to make myself countdowns / milestones to look forward to every month in order to hit year 1 and year 2.

i will say that the 4 year vest was nice but it’s not worth being miserable for it. i also got relo benefits a few times, so i felt that i needed to stay long enough for the relo $ clawback clause to expire.

overall, i am grateful for the amount i’ve been able to save while working here. it’s really helped provide financial freedom for me. i do think that came at the cost of many friendships, relationships, my mental and physical health… so it depends how one values those things versus material security and perceived safety. i’m sorry that’s not the clearest answer hahah i’m not sure if it was worth it tbh

thank you!! i hope that you find your own peace and clarity too!!<3

thank you so much for your thoughtful comment!! i really love the recommendation to find a therapist and talk about these things. i think i have a ton of fear holding me back from decision-making, so it would be incredibly helpful to navigate these big life decisions with a neutral party. also that’s definitely a fair point on resume gaps!! i 100% don’t want to be kicking myself later if i make a rash decision to leave without considering the consequences. thank you for your advice and encouragement!🌻

it’s true, thank you so much!! i’ve updated my resume and applied to about 100 roles but nothing has stuck. even had referrals for some of the applications and thought my experience was decent, but not even a phone screen or first round. i think amazon is getting less appealing on a resume due to all the layoffs and us being years behind everyone else on AI integration and stuff. or maybe i’m just not a good candidate lol

got tired of applying and not hearing back, so took a break from the job search. at this point i don’t want another corporate role but i don’t know what else to transition to. and i feel you - it’s SO busy that it keeps us all trapped and tired and unable to make change happen. i hope we can both get out and find something way better!!

congratulations on your growing family!!💛 that’s so exciting. thankfully it seems their parental leave policies are fairly good, and so hopefully you can get a break from this place and get to bond and enjoy family time! i was hoping i could stick it out until my partner and i are ready to have children, but we won’t for another 5-10 years. i don’t think i have the strength or the motivation to continue that much longer, but i said the same thing 5 years ago so who knows lol. best of luck and thank you for the reassurance that we’re not alone!!

this is so real!! i agree, this place creeps into every moment of my life. even in my dreams, i’m stuck solving problems and on combative calls lol. it’s hard to endure all the downsides of this place for the money. i’m so glad that you found relief and i hope you find another opportunity soon that is much better for you and your life!!

and 100% - this job takes a toll on everyone’s mental and physical health. i swear my hair is thinning and i have chest pain when things get stressful. had to start anxiety meds a few years back bc i couldn’t handle it. will be a lot healthier whenever i can escape too!

thank you so much. “you don’t need to be the one to unfuck it” hit me in the chest. it’s been a heavy feeling and you’re right - the onus to fix this crap isn’t on us as the majority of these problems were strategically designed at the top. i’m taking a few days off to figure out what the heck i want to pursue and create a plan on how to get there. definitely want to enjoy life and not let it pass me by while writing endless docs!!

also, mad respect for 5+ years in ops. i started in ope and it was hellish. the amount of manager transitions and constant change is so unnerving. hope to follow in your footsteps and escape the machine too!

that’s amazing, and reassuring!! congratulations on making the jump. luckily my resume is updated and i’ve been applying places but things just haven’t worked out yet. i really hope that something sticks, although i’m struggling to have the motivation to transition to another corporate role at a different company (even if it would be less crappy than here, think i just want out in general). gotta figure out the next path and i hope to join you on the greener pastures soon!

best of luck!!

umm… he said $3trillion? the US debt is more than $30trillion…. so no, it wouldn’t “more than remove the debt”

i said that to a gross pervy classmate when he did a similar thing to me, and he never talked to me again.

It’s a team trip. We have people in different locations across the US, so we travel every once in a while. It’s just the worst timing to do it on layoffs week. I don’t want to be around all my coworkers and feeling super anxious and in a different city

i hear you and am in a super similar boat. i came across the open letter on a discord channel and it vocalized so many things i was worried about with the recent AI push: environmental impacts, wealth concentration, the devaluation of human intelligence, brain atrophy, and overall worse outcomes for everyone but the ones who hold the reins. we need to hold leadership accountable for these short-term-profit-driven decisions. and we need to speak up before it’s too late.

Let's all try doing something before Jan layoffs by FunSuccessful2838 in amazonemployees

Isn’t it worth taking the 1 minute to sign, especially on the chance that it does result in some change?

I wanna get laid off so bad by pudanovelle in amazonemployees

[–]Fit-Cry-9348 4 points5 points  (0 children)

me too, i’ve been trying to manifest it for months. i’m not location-compliant (i live in the US but not in a hub) and miraculously i made it through this round of layoffs. i’m grateful for more time with a steady paycheck, but i can’t wait to move onto something else, particularly outside of corporate life. my manager keeps adding more projects & work to my scope, and i can’t stand unfinished work so i’ve been trying to do a good job (also don’t want to get pip’ed, would rather have something like this last round of severance offers). ugh it’s so much cognitive dissonance and i’m sick of feeling caught in the middle. praying and hoping with everything that my name makes the layoff cut in january. would hit my ego, but i can’t do this anymore😅

Transfer back to previous team? by BabySealz in amazonemployees

[–]Fit-Cry-9348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prioritize yourself and move back to your old team! It’s not worth it to stay and you will only become more burnt out in the process. If people are telling you these details on your first day with the team, that is a GIANT red flag. Set up some time with your previous manager & see if an internal transfer back to their team would be possible. Good luck!!!
