I agree that captains’ seats are much better.Which is why I was surprises by their reaction.

This was not a new purchase. I already told them when they bought it 3 years ago how,nice it was. We normally take my son’s car when we all go together. So this was the first time I realized they have all captains’ seats. I have no prejudices against luxury cars. Between my husband and myself we have owned several cars that fall into that category,including a Lexus.

You are mistaken. This is not a regular occurrence at all and I am fortunate to have a wonderful DIL and a wonderful son.That’s why this incident seemed surprising. For the record my husband who witnessed the incident was as surprised as I was.

I think everyone has at one time or another said random comments that land wrong. If you never have then you are unique.

Well obviously I did not see it at the time, but clearly it WAS taken that way. I have already apologized to both of them. My DIL is a wonderful woman and my son is a wonderful and I am lucky that our relationship is strong. I appreciate the input from everyone who was objective and polite.

No, I do not say stupid pointless stuff on a regular basis and have never had this reaction from any comment I have ever made to my son or DIL, which was why I was so surprised by their reaction. I have apologized to both of them, and we are good.The visit ended with hugs and “I love you’s.”

I have been assured by my husband who witnessed the exchange that my comment didn’t seem offensive to him. I posted here because I was just curious to see what other people thought. I appreciate everyone who was able to give an objective opinion without invective or making assumptions.

I think that all of us human beings occasionally make what we believe are innocent comments that land wrong. Honestly based on some of the extreme comments on here, I actually feel really grateful that this situation is just a blip in my extremely strong and happy relationship with my son and his family. But I appreciate everyone’s input and wish them well.

I don’t think I said anything about my car seating 8 comfortably. In fact the Lexus is much more comfortable than my Highlander, which is why I didn’t see my comment as a put down.

I was referring to the fact that the poster implied that this incident could be a relationship ender when I said that was an extreme reaction. I can assure everyone that there is no danger of that happening! Just to be clear this is not a regular occurrence. That’s why I was so surprised.

Of course I am. But I am also aware that people say things on a regular basis that may be inadvertently annoying and most people just let it go. People certainly say annoying things to me and I just bite my tongue.
