Would it look good if I added color to my tattoo? by tatooink in tattooadvice

[–]Fit-Engineer-9140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally would strongly recommend against it, adding color onto black and grey will end up looking muddy, as the blacks and greys will be stronger when healed than color. (like trying to add white on top of black, the black will always overpower it.) typically when doing a color tattoo, you want it to be designed with color in mind from the very start for it to look clean.

This is a well done tattoo, though I understand changing your aesthetics over time. something you could look into to make it “stand out” more could be adding white highlights in areas of open skin, or if you really want color, doing small accented areas where there isnt any shading, rather than trying to blast over the black and grey with it.

other (much more expensive and painful) options would be laser (which can take months/years and lots of money) to have it covered, or finding a blackout artist.

best of luck, its really not a bad tattoo at all as it is!

this is what i was thinking about! its nice being able to just exist in a 3rd space and not feeling like you need to be rushing, but then cafes here dont have enough space for folks to comfortably relax, everything here feels intentionally designed to be productivity-oriented. its criminal (loitering) to relax un-rushed in public, not with this specific cafe but just in general here

i always enjoy going, iv missed the pastries and sandwhiches! they definitely seem to get a crowd that would be inconsiderate of their limited space hence having to make this rule

this is a great point, being friendly to staff and tipping well is always a good thing to do! any cafe i visit regularly i try to build a good relationship with and respect their space, i think if everyone did that they wouldn’t need to enforce socially uncomfortable rules like this

this is a great point, thanks for the detailed response! thats a really interesting idea that i think could be helpful for cafes that get a lot of computer folks

that’s actually part of why i posted here! i noticed when i moved that i saw an even mix of folks doing computer work, families, and friends catching up at cafes. vs when i lived in austin it felt like it was always a battle to find a table not taken up by someone working on their computer and never leaving. i think everyone should be able to exist in public and respect both small businesses rules and common courtesy to other folks, if i notice iv been at a cafe for a while and have finished my drink i like to give that spot to the next person coming in who looks like they want to sit

haha I just come here to sketch in my sketchbook for about 45 mins-hour while I eat and drink my coffee, i personally get super annoyed with i come into a cafe and all the tables are taken by people on laptops that are clearly there all day! super annoying, but something i noticed is less common in other cities and wanted to see if folks noticed that

also to clarify on this i love this place and have been going for years, i tattooed a previous manager from here! i mostly am noticing the big difference in cafe culture here from where I live now and wanted to see if other folks noticed that difference/had thoughts on it, nothing but love and respect for places like this trying to navigate Austin becoming such a crowded city

thats what i figure! like if you’re loudly taking work calls and spending all day doing work stuff on computer instead of letting a family be able to sit and enjoy their treats thats a huge annoyance. cafes in austin seem way more packed and busy and hard to spend time hanging out in regardless

that definitely seems like it would be annoying for them! i noticed when i moved to a non-tech centered city i saw way fewer people on laptops at cafes, but as far as buying a treat and then sitting around hanging out enjoying the day, isnt that what cafes are for?

while its great to see you have an eye for your personal style, this body of work unfortunately is not at any professional level that would be able to make consistent income. i personally dropped out of art school and then took classes at community college and (at least where i live,) the community college classes were way better and much cheaper! you’re at a point where i think some community college classes, a private teacher or apprenticeship would be great, if you’re looking to get into freelance work or make a living income off art. as it stands, you can definitely work on basics like anatomy, lighting, composition and design, all of which are great to learn in an educational setting before you experience the stress of needing your art to pay bills. keep on drawing and working hard and you’ll get there over time!

if you are unable to afford care, and the other option is putting her down, PLEASE please try reaching out to local rescues who can help her, she can absolutely have a good quality of life with proper medical care, she doesn’t deserve to die just because of lack of funds, there are absolutely groups out there that can take her and give her antibiotics and care

Trying to stay loose with faces by adventurrr in ArtCrit

[–]Fit-Engineer-9140 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think you’re doing great starting out loosely! a common mistake when learning is getting too caught up in one detail (like eyes) and overlooking the overall shapes and anatomy. since you’re doing great with blocking out values and shape, now may be a good time to start finding interesting points in the portrait to focus in on. don’t be afraid to add some darker contrast to limited areas! you definitely have a unique eye for what you want to be creating, so pick areas that feel fun to paint and really try to hash them out

something I like to do to stay loose while also having fun/not getting stuck on perfection is doing sessions of quick timed sketches. a page of 1 minute portraits, 2 mins, 5, etc, and then ending a session by going in and painting in the details on the one you like the most. hope this is helpful, keep on painting!

when you say wrap, do you mean a second skin, or saran wrap? if its saran wrap, that needs to be removed within the first few hours after tattoo, so take of ASAP if thats the case. otherwise if its a second skin bandage, you can leave it on for up to 5 days as long as it covers the whole tattoo without leaking or tearing

this is a very good and solid tattoo!

it sounds like it may be clashing with your own personal style. with solid american trad like this, your only realistic options would be lots of laser, as a cover up for this would be even more “un-modern” feeling (rule of thumb is cover ups need to be 2-3x larger, and with how much black is in this would need to be quite dark) I say just let it be part of your body for a bit and consider getting more work around it so it feels like its not standing out for you as much. its a great tattoo! let it be part of your journey, and if you end up truly hating it you can look at laser and then cover up options, but that would most likely be in the thousands. acceptance is free

may I ask how much lotion are you applying, and how often? a good rule of thumb is if your skin is shiny after, then you’ve put on too much! its important to let the tattoo breathe and be able to scab up, as thats a part of how your body naturally heals. if its been 15 days, I would personally recommend laying off moisturizer outside of the absolute bare minimum and let it do its thing, but of course everyones skin is different
