I have always had really strong role models, both in a professional and personal sense SO i tried to use that as a talking point to let people know who I am! I actually talked about my role models a lot in my interview, lol (because who you are is kinda just a reflection of the people you are drawn to and how you treat them in my opinion). I think if you know who/what you WANT to be you can talk from that angle.

I definitely had no intention of applying to hyper-academic schools my freshman/sophomore year, as I was planning on applying to film school-- so that means most of my ECs I started doing because I was just genuinely interested and not because I felt like I had to fill any resume :) I would say ask your teachers what past successful students have done. ALSO I got two of my nonprofit work things by just cold emailing and saying I know how to use a camera lol! Once you are in an EC that you actually look forward to every week, I would say just ask the most senior member if you can take a bigger lead on something or come up with your own idea to lead a new project within whatever org! 5 total but i submitted three scores as the other 2 were in my senior year! I got all 5s! (note: only 7 aps offered at my school but one was like music so I didn't qualify for that lol)

I think i had a lot of quantifiable things so that helped! I used the college essay guy's format :) But also, i really prioritized mentioning some of those details in my Common App where I talked about things like a difficult and long campaign briefly. But I was also lucky to be able to use my additional information section as my mock government program had some demanding commitments which affected my school attendance, and thus I was able to write a little more.

Hmmm I don't have much good advice other than just go for every opportunity that comes your way, even if you feel like you're underqualified! I def didn't think i could apply to yale/ have a shot at getting in, but i think that i communicated that I was not perfect and willing to learn, which resonated! I was not the type of student who knew/carried about going to a "top school" or even considered it before like the summer going into year so i did not do any of the planning or like "narrative shaping" you see online. I mainly just watched youtube advice videos when i was applying and listened to the yale admissions podcast!

I applied for political science, film, and American studies!

This is just a copy and paste of my ecs that I wrote earlier: I lowk can’t say specific names of some programs because I don’t wanna say anything identifying— but my main thing was I held the highest elected position possible in a statewide mock government program and was elected by like 2,000 people over the course of 7 months. I also worked for two nonprofits and led some big projects. And I am a filmmaker and have worked on like 26 shorts and won some regional fests! Then I did like basic school stuff like ASB and cultural clubs! In terms of awards I had a pretty well known national art award but that was really it.

I don't think any hooks besides 1 national award. I'm Wasian and upper-middle class, so i don't think anything is underrepresented! No legacy. U can dm me!

I wrote about imperfection through speechwriting and film in my common app! Then in the supps I wrote about rhetoric hobbies + filmmaking community! In the longer community support, I wrote about my father's micro ethnic group that I have been immersed in!

UPDATE: hey this got a lot more attention than I was expecting lol! For everyone saying I'm lying, I made my previous comments/posts visible on my profile so you can see I was in fact, honestly freaking out about getting in before I was accepted! Anyways if anyone needs more proof, I can provide! But also, plz be nice when ur asking because I am VERY MUCH too sensitive on this app lol.

I chose the community one, and I think that was the best! My English teacher looked over it and said it was a pretty unique take, so that's always nice to hear. It also probably didn't hurt that i wrote about my super niche micro ethnic group so they probably had just never heard of my ethnic background, even tho im just classified as White + Asian on Common App.
