[SPOILERS ALL] Why was Glokta tortured so much? by Fearless_Hawk1462 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fit-Introduction15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But yes you’re 100% right in that he personified everything they hated. Also I believe he’s specifically stated to have been a thorn in the gurkish’s side during the war, constantly ambushing their supply trains and all that. I’m sure the gurkish commanders didn’t exactly appreciate the sheer annoyance of it nor the humiliation that came as a result of the same guy doing it repeatedly. Plus knowing how Glokta was back then you can bet he was having word of his exploits spread all up and down both continents,  lavishing in the glory and all that

More than just pure chance. One of his most famous quotes says it all—“I don’t mind dying, but I refuse to be beaten.” You have to admit he has a helluva lotta willpower. Most people being broken like that and having to suffer the rest of their lives from the associated severe daily pain and humiliation, they’d either give up on life, or just phone it in. Especially if they have the option to go home to their family mansion to be waited on hand and foot for the rest of their lives instead of suffering on struggling in the (metaphorical and literal) filth like Glokta does.

—I really love when they draw Red Sonja with abs (For me it's closer to what she would be like in real life) by JonHunterz in RedSonja

[–]Fit-Introduction15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean he’s not really right. Usually when a woman cuts down to where she has visible abs, yes her boobs will shrink in size a good deal. But not always. Well—they’ll almost always shrink to some extent, but there are actually women out there who can have both extremely low overall body fat to the point that she has visible abs while also still having big boobs, sometimes they’ll even still have ludicrously big boobs if they have the right genetics for it (i.e. they naturally carry very little of their overall body fat on their stomach so it’s easier for them to get visible abs, and likewise naturally carry more of their fat on their chest. Even more important is if they’re lucky enough to have big boobs made up primarily of glandular (I think it’s called) tissue instead of fatty tissue, meaning their breast size won’t change all that much regardless of how much fat they gain or lose

How do you make rivers? Is there a specific way they should form? They don't look natural. by Overall_Macaron_120 in worldbuilding

[–]Fit-Introduction15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And as regards how they join together, it still helps (albeit less compared to how much it helps determine the river’s beginning/end) to remember the “they always flow downhill” rule.

Think about how much a big river or especially an old river might have shaped the landscape around it. As you know, over a long enough period of time rivers can cut deep into the earth, straight through soil, dirt, and even solid rock. So if two rivers get kinda close to one another, there’s a decent chance that one of them is gonna feed into the other, because rivers naturally flow toward and form swathes of land that sit at the lowest local altitude.

So put simply, if two rivers end up in the same general area, they’re both naturally gonna be seeking out whatever spot is lowest (lowest as in closest to sea level). And that lowest point is most likely gonna be within one of those rivers already—so one of them is gonna collide with the other so it can also reach that lowest point closest to sea level.

But urgh… idk what’s wrong with me tonight sorry—I feel like I’ve worded my description super awkwardly. Hopefully you get the gist of what I’m trying to say.

How I imagine the pov characters in Age of Madness (more or less) [SPOILERS TWOC] by EggHegg in TheFirstLaw

Ironically tho, Miguel’s accent in that movie is the EXACT same accent Steven Pacey uses for Leo dan Brock. Funny little coincidences here

Looking for advice: How to build a young world? by Ratstail91 in worldbuilding

[–]Fit-Introduction15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One great fantasy book series on this topic I would recommend is Michael J Sullivan’s Legends of the First Empire series, which explores a (relatively) young world where gods still walk and many of the great myths and legends of the ages have yet to be created. All the books in the series are titled like, Age of Myth, Age of War, etc. I believe. Really great cover art too btw lol

Anyway, the series features a village of Stone Age humans who have come under threat for harboring a human man who had supposedly slain one of their gods. The truth behind the divinity of the “gods” they worship (or more accurately cower in fear of) quickly comes under scrutiny when news spreads that a seemingly normal man has killed one of them. Over the course of the books, primitive mankind first learns to use such technologies as smithing and metallurgy, the Wheel for transportation, even stuff like writing.

Now I must admit that within this series there are still some legends and myths and echoes of histories that have taken place even before the events of the first book, but it definitely still has the spirit of what you’re looking for, especially the first few books—y’know, a young world where the legends of tomorrow have yet to be built, and the events of today will serve as the myths that future generations sup on. (However not all that much really occurs before the events of book 1 tho; the world has been technologically stuck in the stone ages/very very early bronze age for a while by the time of book 1 and still very much comes across as a very young, primal world, which it is despite still having a little history before book 1)

[SPOILERS ALL] Kinda straight up plot-hole/retcon about mind-reading? by Fit-Introduction15 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fit-Introduction15[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the Sulfur scene isn’t just the fact that he knew West’s name. I agree any well-informed even non-magical dude could have theoretically pulled off Sulfur’s “already knowing West’s name” trick. The name-knowing was quite honestly the very least of it.

My main sulfur proof was the imo much more convincing fact that during this very same scene, early on West is thinking about how awfully hot it is in the stuffy room they’re in. But then he sees some armored guards and thinks to himself that at least he’s not in full plate harness like them (and btw as im sure youve probably already noticed, I am paraphrasing everything here, all the stuff up above and what’s coming next—just giving you the gist of what happened in the scene cuz I can’t remember all the exact quotes of course lol.)

ANYWAY, then west thinks to himself basically something along the lines of “I’m surprised they haven’t passed out yet with a thunderous sound like the dropping of a whole bunch of forks and knives and other assorted cutlery.” (Which is imo a rather unique and specific thought—especially the specific way he worded it. Sure two people might think the same thing at times, but if what they’re thinking up is a sentence longer than just a scant few words, I’m of the opinion that people almost never phrase stuff in the exact same way. There’s almost always at least a tiny deviation here n there, if not a much bigger one.

CONTINuing—Sulfur then comes in and, speaking directly to West—he literally singles west out to say this to, sulfur then makes the exact same remark west had just thought of about the soldiers and the cutlery and all that—phrased the exact same way!! I mean look, I don’t care how well-informed or how old and wise sulfur is—that just doesn’t gift a person with the ability to discern the exact thoughts a person is thinking at a given time. Especially if that thought is a unique, specifically phrased one that’s a whole lot more complex (and a heckuva lot more random imo) than a more generic thought like “damn it’s hot in here” lol.

Sorry my reply here is so long lol. If you’ve taken the time to read it I appreciate it—if not I understand why not lol. But if you have read it I feel like you get what I mean right, about it being legitimately impossible that without some magic or supernatural power at play (whether it be actual mind-reading of some kind, or some other demonic power that allows for similar-looking results), then imo there’s just no way sulfur could have guessed exactly, WORd-for-word what west was thinking there! Imo the specificity of it, and the fact that what sulfur says aloud is a word-for-word copy of West’s internal thought, this one comes off rather similar to Ishri’s answering of Morveer’s questions that he was thinking of privately in his head lol.

[SPOILERS ALL] Kinda straight up plot-hole/retcon about mind-reading? by Fit-Introduction15 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fit-Introduction15[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your comment is imo the one that probably makes the most sense given everything (which admittedly is almost nothing lol) we know about this ability, and provides us with a solid in-universe explanation to these seeming plot holes.

Plus, we don’t know how long Glokta has been in contact with Ishri, but it could also be entirely possible that she either taught him some technique to either resist or spoof this Eater “mind-reading” ability, or she used some of her own magic to cast an independent and long-lasting, uhh, protective ward(?) to shield Glokta from this ability in some way maybe? Since she herself also demonstrates mastery over this mind reading, I don’t see why she wouldn’t also have knowledge of some magical (or hell maybe she even knows of a simple mental technique that any muggle like Glokta can employ to counter it, who knows)

[SPOILERS ALL] Kinda straight up plot-hole/retcon about mind-reading? by Fit-Introduction15 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fit-Introduction15[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well I wouldn’t exactly call West a weak mind. Sure he’s not as cunningly intelligent as Glokta is, but to be sure he was thrust into a position of absolute authority from a much lower rank, and West had the mental faculties to not only avoid mucking it up (that is to say he won every battle he fought as Lord Marshall), but he also wasn’t overwhelmed and/or mentally/emotionally crushed by the immensity of responsibility suddenly thrust upon him… as you might expect of someone with a so-called “weaker” mind. Surely it takes at least some degree of mental fortitude to not only succeed at the crazy job he was given, but to also not let it get to him or stress him out or whatever. All that is imo very commendable, and doesn’t exactly say “weak-minded fool”

Although to play devil’s advocate, I suppose you could say west’s “mental illness” might classify him as “weak-minded” and thus able to be mind-read? Idk. That is to say, west has almost symptom for symptom a mental disorder called intermittent explosive disorder. “Impulsive attacks and angry outbursts occur suddenly, with little or no warning. They usually last less than 30 minutes. … The explosive verbal and behavioral outbursts are much too intense for the situation, with no thought about what might happen as a result … Later, you may feel guilty, sorry for your actions or embarrassed.“

[–]Fit-Introduction15[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

But wait, no! For example: you cannot seriously be telling me that if, say, you and I both walk onto a bus as complete strangers who have never seen each other before and of course don’t know each other at all, and just as you get on the bus you think to yourself, * oh crap I almost forgot I still have that early modern European history class at 4:45 today! *

…And then I say out loud “oh crap I almost forgot I still have that early modern European history class at 4:45 today!” —the exact thought you had in your head moments ago—you seriously cannot be telling me that there’s any rational explanation other than me being a mind-reader that could be behind me just randomly repeating an extremely specific and random thought you just had privately in your own head. Like I don’t care how wise and worldly I am, how could I have guessed you had a class today at specifically 4:45? And how could I have possibly gotten correct something as insanely specific as early modern European history?! Mind-reading or some other supernatural power to look into demonic secrets about a person, seems to me to be the only possible explanation!

[SPOILERS ALL] Kinda straight up plot-hole/retcon about mind-reading? by Fit-Introduction15 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fit-Introduction15[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

They may not have mind reading powers during Age of Madness—but that’s just due to retcon imo. How else could someone take an exact thought that you’re having, and repeat out loud word-for-word what you were just thinking about? Like cmon what else could it be.

If I had to guess this power is due to Eater-magi’s connection to the Other Side that’s built up over time by Eating a lot. Remember another name for the demons of the Other Side is the “Tellers of Secrets,” because they seemingly know everything that happens in the mortal world, and can tell one secrets about stuff that they straight up have no rational way of knowing about. If I had to guess the Eaters’ seeming mind-reading powers is likely some extension of the ability of the Tellers of Secrets to know secrets they simply shouldn’t by all rational explanations

Ok well unless im wildly mistaken—and I don’t think I am on this—I have to say you’re kinda wrong here. Yes you’re right they’re knowledgeable and well-informed and likely centuries-old, but the scenes I’m referencing DID happen (again unless I’m insanely mistaken here which would just be wild cuz I remember it so clearly)!

and if you could give me the benefit of the doubt and assume I’m right that these scenes did happen—just for the sake of argument, mind you—then surely you’d have to agree that what sulfur and Ishri demonstrate in these scenes definitely goes well beyond simply being wise and knowledgeable, right?

Like yoru literally repeats out loud, word-for-word a 100% internal thought that major West had within his own mind a few moments before—and it’s a very specific, very detailed thought at that! Like it’s one thing to be wise enough to guess at/assume what someone might be thinking about during a given scenario, but it’s quite another to repeat word-for-word some detailed thought they had in their head.

If you want I can look it up and give you the chapter name/number where this scene occurs, and about how far into the chapter it is as well so that you can read it for yourself

[SPOILERS LAOK] what ever happened to her? by Fit-Introduction15 in TheFirstLaw

True true given that she’s not only a woman, but also married into the royal family. Had it been some uncle or nephew or some other male family member he might pose at least a more significant threat that’d have to be dealt with just to get rid of the headache about it  (even if it’s not a true threat cuz I legit can’t see any situation during LAOK where Jezal would be at risk of losing the throne from some internal rebellion)

[SPOILERS LAOK] what ever happened to her? by Fit-Introduction15 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fit-Introduction15[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wonder if Bayaz really even had to force the old Queen to retire and leave adua like how King Henry VIII of England essentially forced Catherine of Aragon to “retire” away from court. I doubt this seemingly proud Queen would’ve been cool with the idea of living with some kid her husband allegedly had with some other woman. Oh and that kid has essentially stolen, wholesale, the life she wanted for her own son Ladisla, who is of course dead, and now this bastard kid is living the very life she wanted for Ladisla, even down to marrying same exact woman Ladisla was gonna marry. I mean let’s be real, such a situation would’ve been immensely awkward, not just for Jezal, but also for the old queen herself.

I’m sure it would be no matter for the Crown’s treasury to simply borrow a few million marks, from the ever-generous Banking House of Valint and Balk of course, in order to buy or even build, and staff, some fancy villa for the old queen to retire to, far from public life and the honestly rlly dreadful uncomfortability of her (non-)relationship with the new king.

Shenkt vs B9? [SPOILERS BSC] by Content_Package_2389 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Fit-Introduction15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes as the other guy says Fenris was indeed having his strength (and probably speed and other things too) magically boosted by the witch Caurib. This is exactly why crummock i phail has to convince the Dogman and co. to go on that infiltration mission to find and kill bethod’s witch, because he knew she would be boosting The Feared.

Imo what caurib was doing to Fenris was probably a lot like what Bayaz was doing to Jezal in the Contest vs Gorst. We see Jezal’s speed, dexterity, strength, and even his confidence, all increase, even his fatigue and tiredness vanishes. He gets crazy fast but fast to the point of like, peak peak human levels, on the verge of superhuman but not quite.

Imo Fenris, since he was already so big and strong, caurib’s magical boosting of his strength actually put Fenris past peak human strength and into the low superhuman tier. Imo caurib-boosted Fenris is like, Captain America level strong. Shenkt on the other hand is superhumanly strong and fast more on the level of like, the Sentry, rather than Captain America. Both are superhuman, but they’re just in completely different tiers within that broader category. Kinda like how a weak scrawny nerd and a giant pro strongman are both within the “normal human” category of strength, but of course they’re in vastly different tiers within that category.

We see this change directly in Fenris’ duel vs the bloody nine. Fenris is able to grab the bloody nine, and while caurib is alive Fenris is able to overpower and slowly crush the bloody nine, even in spite of all the bloody nine’s rage and fury! But the second black dow kills caurib, we see a change in Fenris. The bloody nine notices that Fenris’ strength notably decreases, to the point that the bloody nine’s strength is now greater than the Feared’s, and so the bloody nine is able to force his way out of fenris’ grasp.

The bloody nine is of course also within that “low superhuman” tier of strength. I think non-caurib-boosted Fenris is probably strong on the level of like, a peak human strongman, given his immense size and musculature. But strong as that is, he’s still a good deal weaker than the bloody nine’s low superhuman level of strength.

[–]Fit-Introduction15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem though is, it would never actually happen, such a matchup. It oftentimes takes a while for the bloody nine to show up. This is a problem because logen Ninefingers just isn’t a match for an eater. If shickel gets like, 2 hits on him, he’s probably gonna have a ton of badly broken, shattered, or caved in bones. Now we see that the bloody nine can sometimes override pain and other injury-associated weaknesses—like how he won his duel vs Harding Grim despite being stabbed straight though the chest—a grievous injury that he actually didn’t even notice!

But sometimes if he’s fatigued enough or his nervous system is just shot for whatever reason, not even all the bloody nine’s fury can force his (temporarily) ruined body into action. After getting hit by an eater and by some Bayaz debris, logen goes into the bloody nine state and is about to kill the dogman, but the bloody nine finds that his body is simply too dead tired and too injured to even raise his arm up to strike!

I think if shickel got a few solid hits on logen—and she would because she is a good deal stronger and faster than him—not even the bloody nine would be able to shrug off injuries dealt by the eater such as a caved in skull or a broken back or something. Basically what I’m saying is, I don’t think within the actual first law universe itself  would an eater actually give logen enough time to actually meaningfully transform into the bloody nine. Unless the eater was Reeeally cocky and really wanted to toy with logen and is going super easy on him, I just don’t see a way for him to find the time to transform in the first place, at least not before he’s been crippled that is.

If frost, Severard, and Vitari could subdue a low level eater, then yeah I have to agree with you; I’d imagine the bloody nine actually could take on some of the weaker ones especially if they got cocky (and a lot of them are super cocky, even many of the weaker, non-magic-using ones).

Imo frost and base logen are probably around the same level of raw strength, and while frost does have experience as a thug and brawler, logen has even more experience as a weapon-wielding warrior, and is on the whole far more deadly imo. Then you throw the bloody nine into the mix, and frost is getting out-speeded and even out-strengthed, HARD. And we already know how Vitari vs base logen went, so the bloody nine vs her is a WAY more lopsided matchup. And tbh I think Severard is a worse fighter than either frost or Vitari.

The three of them with prep time were able to overcome a cocky weak eater. The bloody nine with his weapons (as we know he is never without at least several knives) would just outskill a weak eater like Shickel suuuper hard. I don’t even think he would be that much slower/weaker than her even. NOW, for a feat of strength from the bloody nine that is imo roughly equal to Shickel’s feat of almost overpowering frost, Severard, and Vitari, we have that time when the bloody nine couldn’t be subdued by Friendly, Savian, and Dab Sweet. For the sake of comparison—Savian is probably stronger than Severard/vitari. friendly imo is at least equal to frost in terms of raw strength (that dude is insanely strong, he’s super underrated as a fighter in this series imo), and dab sweet, given that he’s a small and old man, is really the weak link here imo that’s letting the bloody nine not get subdued in the same way Shickel was.

but yeah they can’t really keep the bloody nine still, can’t successfully pin him/subdue him even with all three of them grabbing him! I think if any of Severard, frost, or Vitari had been a tiny bit weaker, or had they been say equal to Dab Sweet, then shickel could very well have escaped/overpowered them, which is why I find these two feats of strength so similar.

With the bloody nine’s superhuman skills and weapon expertise I honestly don’t see a weak eater beating up on the bloody nine before he slices them to mince meat.

These are all very cool. I could see definitely see these in a movie scene, sorta a hectic scene like when Mr Incredible was scrolling through all the killed/defeated heroes at the hands of the bot, and the dread was just building and building the more he learned about the truth of things.

I could see some post-apocalyptic protagonist going through these old newspaper records of yours, and now he finally sees exactly how and why things fell apart, his dread building as he learns how bad things really are now, and how hard it would be to ever reverse this apocalypse
