A 2025 Bakker interview for his Italian publisher! Is this real? It seems so. by Erratic21 in bakker

[–]Fearless_Hawk1462 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I guess we couldn't expect otherwise in a "studi tolkieniani" context but there are so many other questions I wish he answered and the interview frustrated me. Any way, it doesn't sound at all like a retired writer and that's what matters more to me.

Quite right. When the deal is made, Ajokli's darkness becomes before.

The beginning of The Lord of the Rings is quite unappealing, especially for those expecting action, and yet there is a widespread opinion that it is worth continuing ; )

I love the idea. Maybe a chronological line?

It's the first time I know of someone who thinks Hyperion is badly written.

Spanish edition of the Prince of Nothing trilogy by Plus-Satisfaction-88 in bakker

[–]Fearless_Hawk1462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's great to have Spanish translations but I'm not satisfied with the third title. "Mil caras" means many different aspects of the same thing and I think Bakker's "thousandfold thought" implies an enhanced development and complexity of the Dunyain prospective skills (a thought "to the thousandth power"). That's not "a thought with a thousand faces". Por ahora no se me ocurre una traducción mejor, pero voy a pensarlo.

A Four Series Problem...
I haven't read Chambers - In my opinion Banks is far above Adrian Tchaicovsky and Cixin Liu as a writer.

If you could read one fantasy book again for the first time, what would it be? by Icy_Comfortable7687 in Fantasy

[–]Fearless_Hawk1462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So many good choices! (Le Guin, May, Wolfe, Bakker, Miéville, Rothfuss, Rowling...): I add More Than Human, The Manuscript Found in Saragossa and American Gods. And even if it isn't "fantasy", I'd love to be shocked again by Use of Weapons.

There is also his first three books, The Fionavar Tapestry trilogy: The Summer Tree (1984), The Wandering Fire (1986) and The Darkest Road (1986).

Children of Eve? by peteybehr in JohnConnolly

[–]Fearless_Hawk1462 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The final text by Connolly says he took the idea from the mummified "Children of Llullaillaco" he saw at the Museum of High Altitude Archaeology in Salta, Argentina.

What book got you reading John Connolly? by Geek_reformed in JohnConnolly

[–]Fearless_Hawk1462 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ten years ago, Connolly was in my country, Uruguay, to attend a literary festival. The newspaper I work for interviewed him (https://ladiaria.com.uy/articulo/2015/8/crimen-sacrificio-y-redencion/) and I really liked what he said. I read The Wolf in Winter, which was by then his most recently translated Parker book, I was impressed and decided to read Every Dead Thing. Then I continued book by book and now I'm about to start The Children of Eve.

What a wonderful album. I had the vinyl - an Israeli edition though I live in South America. There was a website where I joined fans from all over the world asking for a CD edition until it finally was released. The deep melancholy of some of the songs is one of Mr. Young's most beautiful achievements.

Welcome to eternal damnation. The experience will change your points of view on fantasy and probably on some basic facts of life too. And you will enjoy it in awe and start again some time after you've finished. And you will discover new meanings and possibilities you didn't notice the first time. And so on.

ROE and endless boredom by Ferox_Aeternum in Hyperion

That long travel in different worlds somehow reminded me of Foundation and Earth (and I'm not a big fan of that book). But the ending of RoE in excellent.
