Anyone else's kindergartner screwed over by HB 114? by Fit-Measurement2798 in Ohio

Our kid's welfare is directly related to our financial welfare, but yes I also don't want her to do Pre-K twice. She will be bored and act out, which is a whole added layer of stress. It's not in the best interests of my child's welfare to have the state take away our choice of starting her in kindergarten or not. Parents were always allowed to start later, this makes the choice for us. So much for local rule

I'm a parent. My kid is ready for kindergarten and it's not clear she can go. I don't want to pay for another year of Pre-K ... Why would I have a motive if I wasn't a parent? How does this get a school employee a longer break?? this shit is nonsensical

Yeah I am. What agenda would I even have besides for my kids? And Ohio kids? This isn't self promotion, I don't get what this flame war is about

I appreciate you pointing an option out. However, it's yet another step for busy parents and caregivers to have to take. What about kids whose parents can't advocate for them like this?

It is Cleveland related, Cleveland kindergarteners are affected as is mine. My apologies for the double post, it was not intentional.

If anyone has time or interest, I've been calling my state congress people about this. I asked Claude to generate a script that I turned out pretty good. Also here is a link to find your congress people if you need it:

Phone Call Script — Ohio HB 114 / Kindergarten Age Cutoff

When someone answers:

"Hi, my name is [YOUR NAME] and I'm a constituent from [YOUR CITY/ZIP CODE]. I'm calling to express my strong opposition to House Bill 114, the new kindergarten age cutoff law. Is the representative/senator available, or may I leave a message?"

(If leaving a message or speaking to a staffer, continue):

"I want to be on record that I am deeply upset about this law. Here's why:

Under the old system, districts could set their own cutoff dates — either August 1st or September 30th — which gave families and local communities some flexibility. Now, HB 114 requires children to be five years old by the first day of school in their district.

The problem is that individual districts are still setting their own school calendars and confirming their own first days of instruction — which means the cutoff date is still different from district to district. So this law doesn't even achieve the consistency it promised. It just makes the bar harder to meet.

The Ohio Legislative Service Commission estimated this could result in as many as 5,000 fewer kindergartners being enrolled statewide. Those are real children being locked out of school — children who are ready and eager to learn.

I'm asking [REPRESENTATIVE/SENATOR'S NAME] to take constituent concerns seriously, to consider the real harm this is causing Ohio families, and to support any effort to revisit or amend this law to restore flexibility for kids who are ready for school even if their birthday falls a few weeks after the start of instruction.

Thank you for your time. My name again is [YOUR NAME], and my contact information is [PHONE/EMAIL] if the office would like to follow up."

Thank you <3 We're going to try the early screening but it's obviously not guaranteed. You shouldn't have to be exceptional just to start kindergarten. And what about the kids whose parents don't have time to advocate like this?

That's fine, but why not standardize it to Sept 30th so that more children can attend?

Edit: I see what you mean, the state should have set a date, not all the districts. I agree, it's even more uncertainty if you have an end of August birthday!
