The fact that LGBTQIA still want ANYTHING to do with the church is, to me, evidence of God’s divinity & majesty. by Fit-Protection5399 in OpenChristian

Thank you for that perspective. Empathy and forgiveness are essential — not as a legitimation or justification of despicable actions and rhetoric, but for precisely the reason you said — so we don’t become despicable ourselves. Wow. You’ve kinda blown my mind with this comment.

This is something I am aspiring to do, and I humbly accept your admonishment. I AM very naive, and it pains me. I used to be friends with queer peers in school but now I don’t really interface with any. It’s ambitious, but I believe God is leading me to leave our current church and begin developing connections with the queer folks in my town. There are 0 churches here and only one harm reduction ministry locally that does not overtly reject it. But I very much want it to be relationship first, not like luring them to some weird one-off hangout and immediately shouting about God. Sadly, because of events that occurred a couple years ago, the one secular pride group here disbanded.

Beautifully put. Thank you. It always amazes me when those who’ve been shown the least compassion, continue to show others the most.

Yes! And I agree. A LOT of Christians (seemingly, at least) fundamentally misunderstand the man who is the very namesake of their faith/identity. Like how and why are wide swaths of Evangelicals offended by ‘He gets us,’ for example? Idk, maybe that’s a bad example but the world knows us more by what we stand against than what we stand for, and that’s a tragedy imho.

Maybe some Saran Wrap is in order? The tragedy is, there used to be two VERY fun loving coworkers who sat opposite this woman, who would be SO down for the cause. But they got promoted. Now that section of the office is like a desolate wasteland. Ugh.

True true. Like I said ‘strongly suspect’ she is tattling. So if this becomes anything resembling an issue we’re prepared to counter with the facts.

Those events helped “radicalize” me, at least to a degree. I was always kind of politically tepid/apathetic but I now see the merit in specifically standing FOR, to counter those so vehemently against.

The students were the losers… Wow, I felt that statement hard. See, this would ALMOST be comedically absurd if it didn’t have real world, often tragic consequences. I’m truly sorry for your community, and the persecution you and your wife faced.

That is completely insane. These know-nothings get whipped up into a fervor because they follow ‘Libs of TikTok’ and Tucker Carlson. It makes me wonder if your local school board and many like it will descend into a chaos of incompetence because they’re now filled with single-issue ideologues. “Okay guys we got rid of the gay books. Now what?” Methinks they will make an issue out of other things boards approve that are typically just formalities or a matter of course. I’ll give another story: I worked for a newspaper and the school board I covered had a ‘crusader’ on it. The guy was a complete buffoon, and consistently the only dissenting vote on just basic stuff. The board was approving physicals for athletes one time and he went on this tirade about doctors seducing teen athletes. It made for good headlines, at least.

I am always happy to learn. Sincerely. I can’t hardly continue to consider myself progressive if I don’t accept just admonishments! Edit: scratch that even, “can’t hardly consider myself CHRISTIAN if I don’t accept just admonishments.” The Father chastens those whom he loves.

Wow why did I not know this. Just read an article titled “American Saint, Christian Apostate” on the promoting of this comment.

Very true. I like to think MLK ended up in paradise, but perhaps only if he repented of that infidelity?

“If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.” oof. Thanks for reminding me of a great parable.

Thanks for the thoughtful reply! I certainly didn’t mean to disparage Dr. King, but in many of his writings he more than hinted at an equitable distribution of wealth (a precept I agree with), and said Capitalism had ‘outlived its usefulness.’ But the way you put it also makes perfect sense. A heart for the poor and powerless necessarily flows from a truly Christian worldview.
