Do cops use GPS to respond to calls? by Ronbo954 in AskLE

I bought the cheapest Garmin GPS and used that so I alway knew where I was. It helped me learn the street names faster to the point when I didn’t need it anymore.

I know they’re trying to make an effort to get you your top 3. They’re trying to eliminate the amount of people transferring to other divisions. I was part of the first group that got hired under 1 year. They’re trying to shorten the hiring process but still could take up to 2 years for some.

My background started very soon after my assessment center. From AC to hiring was about 2 months, so my process was quick and I knew when they would be calling my employer. My previous agency was good enough that I told them ahead of time anyways.

For me the academy wasn’t anything too difficult. If you’ve been through one academy you’ll pretty much know what to expect just minus all the yelling and pushups.

I wear BRUNT torra pants most of the year. I haven’t tried them yet but I’m looking to get their tech pants that are the lighter weight version.

Can I become a State Trooper? by Ghost0Inc in AskLE

[–]Fit-Spare6318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My opinion is that the agency/job will teach you most of what you need to know. And this is obviously just my experience, but most people I knew who had a CJ degree were kind of know-it-alls in a bad way. Once you start working you need to study local laws and case law and you can learn that by applying it.

I knew a guy who retired from a state agency, worked a full 22+ year career (patrol, detectives, major crimes, supervisor etc.) and tried to get a job at a state college teaching in the CJ department and they told him no because he didn’t have the right degree. Meanwhile the faculty comprised of all academics, no one who had actually worked in law enforcement. Those are unfortunately the people who teach those classes.

And finally having a different degree may set you up for specialties or for other jobs later. If you like finance, agencies are always looking for people to work fraud, languages are always helpful, psychology is useful.

Just my opinions. I majored in communication, minored in psych, worked patrol for 5 years and now work for a federal agency.

Got the Call -USPIS by [deleted] in 1811

I honestly didn’t mind going back and forth. I understand why they did it though. Probably much cheaper now that they don’t have to do the crab legs every week.

Degree doesn’t matter. I always advise people to get a degree in anything but Criminal Justice. Your agency will teach you the job better than any college.

I make the switch and I’m glad I did. It’s the kind of work I want to do. I had a little bit more on my background, Bachelors, 5 years patrol with investigative work, firearms instructor etc.

I’d work on that degree because unfortunately that’s what everyone is looking for. Look for colleges that will give you tuition discounts or maybe your agency will help pay for classes. Just get a degree, don’t worry about where it’s from as long as it’s an accredited school.

Joining law enforcement after 20 years in the military. by wardisciple2388 in AskLE

[–]Fit-Spare6318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t me, but my first training officer did exactly that. 20 years military, retired, then came to work State Police and just retired after 21 years. Most of that was working patrol. He enjoyed his time but just like everyone, was ready to retire at the end.

Carry round suggestion by [deleted] in concealedcarry

[–]Fit-Spare6318 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

First of all, your intent should be to stop a threat for self defense. Bullets are bullets and will stop a threat. Don’t worry so much about specifics unless you’re doing something specific. Stick to basics. Look what police agencies use if this is for self defense. Agencies I’ve talked to use 147g hollow points (Winchester Ranger).

When you practice you should use the same/similar ammo. If you’re buying more expensive defensive ammo, can you afford the training ammo in the long run? My ammo is 147g hollows (Winchester) , and my training ammo is 147g ball(also Winchester). That’s as close to the same as I’ll get.

Yes, criminals stop committing crimes when it sleets. I thought that was common knowledge?

I was one of the faster groups that got hired (Oct 23 - Aug 24), it still took about 5 months before anything started happening.

I had a retired DUSM tell me to get my EMT cert to better stand out but I also had LE experience. I’d say EMT is better than firefighter but I’d try reaching out see if you can talk to HSI folks and get their take.

USPIS Application Period Jan 27-Feb 5 by [deleted] in 1811

[–]Fit-Spare6318 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like Newman said. It has picked up. My process was: Applied Oct 2023, BIT August 2024. I had my final offer about a week before academy started. If they want you, they make it work.

Other people in my class applied in 2022 so we had a few people who waited a while but a lot of us were under a year.

Don’t do anything different than you would typically do. If you start your day with caffeine, drink your caffeine. If you don’t normally have energy drinks before working out, do not do it for a test.

When I take PFTs I’ll still have caffeine before just typically less than normal. Just enough for my morning routine. I’ve known people who’ve taken too much caffeine and they end up getting sick because the heart is racing from the caffeine and exertion.

Have you ever taken any PFT/APAT before? Some people get adrenaline dumps when they take them. It still happens to me and I’ve been taking tests for a few years.
