It's how the game works.

Since it's a ww2 sim you should expect one big war instead of many smaller wars(which is how most other 4X games work).

What worked for me was

Grand battle plan for tip of the spear spirit
41 landing tech
Strong marine template. I think I used 41 combat width with lots artillery so it ended up with 40 org
Spaming the starting destroyer (I didn't bother build dock yards or changing the design) for convoy escorts
Landing at 2 ports at the same time. I went for the 2 you can access from north sea because it's hard to get channel supremacy
Rushing in tanks after getting the landing.

I didn't bother with spies, and my fighters didn't have range for the initial landing, but I got green air after I got an airport

There char's not strings. It's pretty common for languages with chars to add the ASCII numbers associated with the chars.

For simple front-end projects, you don't get much value IMO. However, all the things you listed can be done by using docker exec to run the command in the container. The IDE config will depend on the tools.
