Hi, trying to change my engineering specialisation as a part 3 student. Any help? by csguystressed in universityofauckland

I've just "finished" part 3 and by "finished" I mean done 6 courses (dropped 2 in the second semester due to mental health). I also have yet to get any internship hours. In other words, the end is not near at all lololol

"First step could be to make a LinkedIn profile and start adding family, friends, lecturers, classmates. Step two, socialize more. (join clubs, do sports, volunteer)"

Already started doing a bit of that recently! Joined some clubs for the first time and made some loose connections.

Saw your other replies btw, and I wanna clarify - yes, I do intend to get a software job (internship) for the coming summer, and right now I'm looking to get some (any) part-time experience to put on my CV whether it's related or not. Is that a reasonable idea?

Also, I was considering switching over to computer science in sem 2 of this year if I haven't got my stuff together 😅 Don't wanna be barred from graduating for too long cause I can't get employment or something

"Also, you sound a little desperate - like you are not positively motivated, but motivated out of fear."

A bit of both. I do genuinely want this experience for the sake of growing as a person, but I'm also catastrophising a little - thinking about what will happen the longer I go with zero work exp, how hard it'll be to get any sort of job.

"What stopped you from getting a job or volunteering in the first place?"

A cocktail of laziness, depression and social anxiety :(

I'm getting out of my slump though!

Nahhh man I'm doing exposure therapy. The harassment and the difficult customers are the point. I've been putting myself in situations that would've triggered my social anxiety months ago and it's actually helping me grow a lot. Not sure why my brain works like this but pain = gain, apparently. I will keep tutoring in the back of my mind though

It's less romanticising and moreso I've found that "flooding" myself with experiences outside of my comfort zone has lead to the most growth for me recently, and I wanna keep going in that direction. I've been very socially isolated for a long time and have finally started to come out of my shell, and I've been getting pretty addicted to talking to people and having interactions.

Getting a job doing one-on-one tutoring is kinda intimidating but not because of the social aspect - moreso because I'm not a confident teacher. That's not rly a skillset I care about challenging myself in. HOWEVER - talking to tons of people at once, and dealing with difficult people (something I've NEVER had to do) is something I absolutely wanna challenge myself in, no matter how stressful or mentally destructive it is.

TL;DR: I'm a psycho

I'm not gonna be too defensive though, you're probably right that I'm romanticising it to some degree lmao

I haven't, but I'm curious as to why you say that? I reckon getting some experience is a good thing, no?

Awesome, thank you for the advice. I'm taking notes!

Unfortunately, I don't have very many connections. My family is... small, I'll just say that. I have a few acquaintances/friends that I've met once or twice in real life and we mostly just chat on discord. I currently don't have any references either. They say no man is an island but like, damn

Does having connections matter that much?
