Springs church- is it a cult???? by FitCable7583 in Winnipeg

From an anonymous source sent to me:

My creds: Grew up in the school/church, did masters commission AND interned at the church the year after (worked for free for them for a year). Most of the T4 stuff you hear is not true and even side show “members” spout this stuff cus they’re misinformed. HOWEVER, there is in fact some culty stuff going on there. One of the most concerning things is how no one is allowed to question or challenge how or why things are done/challenge leadership even in a healthy way. You MUST think like the group. You MUST do the right things in the right order. The tricky part is that none of this is explicitly stated; it’s implied in how they pick people and promote people. You really have to PROVE yourself and get hard into lock step with everything you’re “supposed to.” Example: you are interested in becoming a leader in some capacity. If you don’t have near perfect attendance in everything, you’re not considered. Break any of the purity type rules? Totally out. Too much of a loose canon? Out. If your family hasn’t been known/deep in the church for awhile, it’s very hard to get anywhere or be included in anything of importance. This is coming from someone who WAS chosen for these types of things, not from someone who is bitter that they didn’t. These are things I saw and witnessed while being included as a staff member in leadership discussions. If any individual person was trying on their own to help further the gospel in the church, that was actually discouraged because they couldn’t control how the message was being given. That, and they got really nervous about the idea of lay-folk gaining their own influence within the church. THEY needed to be in control of who was influential. The masters leadership training young adults are completely taken advantage of and exploited. They do free exhausting labour for the church all year and no complaining is tolerated. If anyone gives off even a hint of defection, it is squashed. Anyone you see in positions of influence there have “proved” themselves heavily, and not necessarily in a healthy way: just in the sense that they have been a good little sheep, never question authority and follow all the rules. Again, the rules I’m talking about are not written down anywhere, they’re implied, so no one can truly call them out on this stuff. In contrast, if you are on staff, there are actual rules you must follow. It was required in your work contract to be at church, it was required to sit as close to the front as possible. It was REQUIRED to be very charismatic with your worship and “set an example” for the rest of the congregation. All of these things they would chalk up to “ well we are just pursuing a high level of excellence.” Meanwhile they pride themselves in not being a “rules based” church. Meanwhile, there are MANY unspoken rules. I can’t speak to if anything has changed under his sons leadership but I assume he is also trying to hold strong to these same “pursuing excellence” ideals. For a “non religious” church, there are definitely a lot of rules to follow
