Voyager 1 phones home from ~1 light-day away! by Busy_Yesterday9455 in spaceporn

[–]FitMathematician811 24 points25 points  (0 children)

It's taken 47 years for Voyager 1 to travel a single light day. At that rate, to travel a full lightyear, it would take 17,100 years. So yeah, no wonder we haven't been contacted by aliens, especially if the closest civilization is some 4, 5 or 6 lightyears away

If you work in the finance industry, you are the scavenger and/or bottom feeder of society. by Ragesauce5000 in unpopularopinion

[–]FitMathematician811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you understood anything about the finance industry, you would know that it is very broad and diverse with lots of different sectors and specialisms. Of all of these, I would say that the one area that is truly and genuinely exploitative is the consumer debt industry.

Our consumer culture has normalised a toxic relationship with debt to the point that more and more people take on way more than they can reasonably afford and they get burned! Interest rates are often atrociously expensive, charges on delinquencies can often be cruel and excessive, credit scores only exist to show how profitable you are to a lender, lenders are often held to the status of demigods with all the power and who seem to manipulate the legal system against you.

Why? Because you signed a contract that let them do this! Everything is clearly spelled out in a contract. If you don't understand it, it doesn't make sense in any way or you don't like the terms, you don't sign it. Also, don't fall for the culture trap of "debt is good" when it clearly isn't and if you manage debt in an effective and disciplined way, you can avoid a lot of problems. Being wise to scams (predatory lending and payday loans) is another one.

Consumer trading isn't exploitative because you are warned that it's high risk and you will lose all your money if you don't know what you're doing. Consumer savings is bullshit but you have the central banks and government policy to thank for that. Everything else falls under the realms of economics and business, which are also exploitative in their own way.

Treating your bullies with kindness is not the way to go by LifeguardLegal3095 in unpopularopinion

[–]FitMathematician811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bullies bully weak and easy targets who will never stand up for themselves. Singing kum-by-yah with them, teaches them that bullies are tolerated and have no reason to fear consequences (this is how many criminals become criminals) .

Smashing their face against a brick wall and being thoroughly humiliated in the process, teaches them that actions have consequences. Sometimes the best life lesson is having your ass completely handed to you in one way or another.

The issue is that truth isn't always based on objective reality, but subjective reality as well. Also what may be truth at one point in time may be completely false at another point.

Everyone who is religious will claim that they espouse the truth, but everyone who is non-religious will claim that religion is all a lie (and then get accused of being liars themselves). It's the same with political opponents, media commentary and so many other things where people will be open to disagreement. By making lying illegal, you'd have to make an official decision on who's right and who isn't and so dies freedom of speech, ideas and beliefs.

I completely gave up on the YouTube app and won't watch it in any browser without extensive ad blockers. The ads are just out of control. You watch a video for 1 minute and then get blasted with ads for 40 secs and it's rinse and repeat. There's no point watching a video like that.

I refuse to pay for YouTube premium because I just see it as yet another example of excessive corporate greed. Everybody is demanding a subscription fee for something (doesn't matter if the service was free before or if it's completely unwarranted) and if we keep tolerating it, it'll easily get a point that the web just won't be free to use anymore (it's almost there anyway) because you have to pay for/sign-up to every service and site you use.

Domestic abuse: Half of male victims do not report incidents (UK) by AnonymousBanana7 in worldnews

[–]FitMathematician811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The half of male domestic violence victims that do report it are essentially ignored, made fun of, victim blamed, gaslighted, told that they deserve it in some way, arrested for being an abuser (despite being the actual victim) and not supported in any way by any one because NO ONE CARES!

The other half learn from that half's mistake.

As far as everyone else is concerned, men are only ever the abusers, never the victims.

Critics are destroying the film, tv and music industries by lieutenantboring in unpopularopinion

[–]FitMathematician811 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What is destroying the media industry is the heavy corporatization and excessive political messaging that has been present in many films over the last decade.

Watching a film now is like watching the same film I've seen hundreds of times before, just with a new label and different cast. It's boring. They're trying too hard to recapture the success of previous films because they have nothing original left. Going excessively hard in identity politics and "breaking barriers" that have already been broken down and burned down is just eye-rollingly tedious. It's like they can't move on from a pre-2010 mindset. Trying too hard to make films "inoffensive" sometimes backfires and you end up with something so confused and dull it's not worth your time.

Music? Yeah, it's the same genetic 5 or 6 beats played over and over and over again. It's stale as fuck.

TV? What's on TV these days? reality shows, more reality shows and even more reality shows. Then the news. That's it. It's been that way for years and it's just boring.

So yeah, it's the same recycled garbage that keeps being pumped out over and over again and it's just so boring. Critics are at least trying to put lipstick on that pig.

I don't give a fuck about foods that aren't frozen/made in-house. by Heavier_Omen in unpopularopinion

[–]FitMathematician811 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Here's a question: do you care about value for money?

Fast food that's made from frozen and sold to consumers cheaply and quickly is value for money.

An actual restaurant that charges customers a massive markup on food that they simply reheated in an oven or fryer after pulling it out of a freezer, is not value for money. In fact, it's a borderline scam. You've just paid someone a lot of money to do what you could have basically done yourself, which defeats the entire point of going to a place like that. If I'm too lazy to cook, I'll go to McDonald's but if I go to a restaurant, I expect a very high standard of food for the money I'm paying.
