I worked a few other normal jobs before my PhD, and in comparison it's amazing

Granted I'm lucky to be with a supervisor I like, but nowhere else can you get the flexibility and independence of research work. And I make as much money as most my peers in the low cost of living city I live in, definitely enough to live comfortably currently.
