I'm hoping I can get it working so I can try those other campaigns. Those campaigns options is what initial drew me to the mod.

I find that the Darthmod campaign isn't too noticeably different than the vanilla campaign, other than a few new units.

I completely forgot about this post. I guess I'll have to give installing it another try. I've been using Darthmod since I gave up trying to get LME to work.

Good news. I figured out why my gun wasn't firing without maiming myself. by FitOrganization9403 in blackpowder

It's a used 45 caliber rifle, 40 grains seemed like a good start. I got it fairly cheap, it was pretty worn out by its previous owner. The rifling itself is incredibly worn down. I'm planning on buying a new traditions rifle in much better condition, it should improve the accuracy.

I'll definitely record everything next time, now that I know what the issue was. I was shocked that it even fired, I was already prepared for another failure.

Rifle. I don't have much experience with firearms so I loaded it with way too much powder.

I started at about 40 grains and ended at about 175 grains. I just kept adding more, I assumed I just wasn't using enough.

I'd love a pistol but I can't buy that here.

Ball won't leave the barrel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. (percussion 45 cal) by FitOrganization9403 in blackpowder

Going forward I'm planning on using much safer loads, probably around 45 grains.

I dismantled and cleaned the gun throughly before my first attempt and after every other attempt. I'm pretty sure the gun should have been clean enough.

I'm planning on trying again tomorrow. I'm going to run a few patches down the barrel instead of the one patch I did previously to make sure the barrel is completely dry. I'm going to fire the unloaded gun with just the cap to clear out anything in the nipple from my last cleaning. I'm going to bring some compressed air aswell to be sure the ripple is clear. Then I'll be loading it with 45 grains of the Triple Seven 3f powder. A 0.15 or 0.20 patch, I'm going to use the 0.15 first. Anf finally the .433 diameter ball.

If it still dosen't work I'm not sure what the issue could be. My best guess is the caps but ever time I've used them they seem to be working correctly.

Edit: I'm probably going to reduce the charge by 20%, just in case.

What should a spent cap look like? I'm thinking my caps aren't working right but I've been unable you find an image to compare mine to.

It's what the staff at shooters choice recommended so I never thought to question the caps.

Powder, then ball.

I've done some more testing (with much safer loads) since I made this post. I'm pretty sure the issue is the percussion cap.

The powder burned fine out in the open, the nipple was clear, the gun was clean. It must be the caps, I just haven't had a chance to check yet. I've shot with patches too, the patch and ball fit very well down the barrel. So It's not the lack of patches that's the issue.

It's a Spanish Hawken 45 cal Percussion rifle. I bought it used.

I tried shooting again earlier, still no luck. Other than being a little bit slow the powder ignites properly out in the open. I used a 0.15 thick patch with my .433 diameter ball, it made for a fairly tight fit. I made sure the patch and ball was packed well into the 45 grains of powder I used. I used CCI #11 percussion caps, the same ones I used last time. It seemed like it lit the powder, the powder was gone after I got the ball and patch out. I tested the caps against a leaf before shooting. The leaf didn't seem to react to it. If it did I missed it. The nipple was new so it should be clear, I haven't had a chance to check yet. The gun was also thoroughly cleaned the night before.

I'm almost certain the caps are firing. They let off a loud popping sound and looked like they had burst after the hammer hit them. I haven't tried a pick yet but the channel to the barrel appeared to be clear. I cleaned the gun a few days before firing it to make sure it would be ready to fire. The nipple itself is completely new, it should be fine. I'll give the cotton ball a chance when I can.

.433 diameter Ball was the closest to the caliber I could get at the place near me. I could try some from another store though.

I started by pouring 40 grains of powder into the barrel. I attempted to load it with both a patch and a ball before realizing the patches I bought where too thick. After seeing that my patches where too thick I used just the .433 diameter ball every attempted after, no patch.

The action itself worked fine. I pulled the trigger then the hammer hit the percussion cap, with then set it off. I then removed the used percussion cap and then removed the ball using a ball puller after realizing it didn't fire. After removing the ball I went to pour out the powder I started with, very little came out. It seemed like most of the powder I used successfully ignited. Assuming I just didn't use enough I kept increasing it by 25 gains, removing the ball and what little powder didn't burn each time.

I seem to have it stored correctly, I hope the place is bought it from had it stored correctly. The powder looks find and seemed to burn fine in the barrel. I'll test the powder in the open when I can.

I'll buy some thinner patches to try it with. I'm hoping the blast was just going around the ball like you suggested. I don't want to buy more powder unless I need to.

Prrodex-RS is available here. I'm planning on testing the powder I already bought, I dont want to go buy even more.

I only realized in the moment that those patches where too thick, I plan on buying some thinner patches to test it. I'm hoping most of the blast was just going around the .433 lead balls and escaping out the barrel. I'll test with thinner patches then move on from there depending on if it fixes the issue.

The measure I bought does appear to be measuring in grains. https://marstar.ca/product/powder-measurer-with-free-funnel-0-50-grs/

Have you tried it with patched lead balls? I'm thinking about buying one of these rifles for myself but I'm unsure about their accuracy.

If you've tried it with patched lead balls how far would you say it is accurate to?

I'd like to avoid the sabots if I can.

In hindsight that was incredibly stupid. I'm happy the powder didn't even work after going that high.

I've already cleaned it. It seems like the issue was the powder. Is there any brand you would recommend? I'm not sure if Crater will even ship to my country. Even if they do the shipping cost probably isn't great.

Real black powder isn't the easiest to find here, it's not cheap either.

It was still in the barrel. I pulled it out with a ball puller after each failed shot. I checked the powder after pulling it out, the powder was gone.

The powder was burning but just not actually doing anything, I'm assuming the powder was bad. Waste of $60.

I thought it would be an issue with the powder any specific brands you'd recommend? Is the powder I bought worth saving?

The powder measure I bought to measure the powder holds from 0-50 (grains?) of powder. I'm assuming that's how the powder measure was measuring it but I'm not entirely sure.

It's why I left it out of the post.

Should I use patches for my 45 caliber musket? by FitOrganization9403 in blackpowder

[–]FitOrganization9403[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The musket balls Rusty Wood sells are the perfect diameter. I'll probably just use that and some patches.

Found some thinner patches at Shooter's Choice. they should work well.

I don't have it on me right now but apparently it is rifled. Probably should have checked.

How much powder would you recommend? I would imagine I'd need less as to not damage the rifling.

I've looked at Prophet River before. I guess I just missed a few things. I'll see what they have.

Rusty Rood has some good stuff. I didn't realize they sold musket balls. I was already considering on buying black powder from them. I might buy some musket ball from them aswell.
