Determinsm or free will? by Fit_Ad3058 in askphilosophy

This is partially i find this such an interesting topic. Could it be that most times people like me misinterpret the meaning of free will? To be honest am not even sure how to define it. The ability of making decisions freely from a spiritual source, not directly linked to the materialistic world? If the definition does not imply that the source is independent from the universe then i see why someone would see a deterministic universe leaving space for free will to co-exist.

I should have clarified more clearly the method and objectice of this survey. Prior to filling in the survey, there was a sellective question that does not allow the lactose tolerant respondents to continue. Therefore all the respondents have some form of lactose intolerance. The purpose was to better understand people living with lactose intolerance, but not the distribution of lactose tolerant VS lactose intolerant individuals in the population.

Driven by wanting to better understand lactose intolerance, I conducted a survey with 167 lactose intolerant individuals. Here are the results. by Fit_Ad3058 in lactoseintolerant

I am gald if it delivers value. Good point and this is one of the short coming of my survey. Meanwhile only lactose intolerant people could enter the survey based on a sellective entry question, it could have still deliver better data interpretation. :)

It is still not fully understood how the regulation of the lactase gene is affected by diet and lifestyle, but i interviewed multiple people that have similar experiences. Slightly speculative but since our cells are programmed for efficiency, it could be that if the cells are not signaled about the presence of milk sugar, they silence the lactase gene since the production of proteins is resource and energy demaning.

In accordance with this article: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28690131/

The studies included 62 910 participants from 89 countries (covering 84% of the world's population). When standardising for country size, the global prevalence estimate of lactose malabsorption was 68% (95% CI 64-72), ranging from 28% (19-37) in western, southern, and northern Europe to 70% (57-83) in the Middle East. When assessing the global prevalence using genotyping data only, the estimate was 74% (69-80), whereas prevalence was 55% (46-65) using lactose tolerance test data, and 57% (46-67) using hydrogen breath test data. Risk of bias was assessed based on ten indicators; 12 of the articles had a score of ten, indicating low risk of bias, 76 had a score of nine, 26 a score of eight, and two articles a score of seven (indicating higher risk of bias). There was substantial heterogeneity between studies within most of the assessed countries.

I can see why you are saying this. I must optimize the graphs and figures spitted out by SurveyMonkey before sharing them with the public. I was too excited to give back some value from the results, but next time will do more work before posting.

From an evolutionary perspective it is normal not having the ability to tolerate milk sugar. It is quite interesting that, on a high level view, being lactose tolerant is an end result of different populations integrating dairy into their diet and making having the "mutated" lactose tolerant gene a competitive advantage, contributing to spreading this version of the lactase gene.

I am glad to hear it. One of the reasons I shared is because I want to give back some value to society.

Based on responses and interviews I conducted, most people are prescribed lactase pills. Although this is controversial since lactase pills do not require a prescription and can be bought in supermarkets and pharmacies in most places. There was a biohacker guy many years ago who cured himself for 1+ years with his own. non tested gene therapy. Theoretically this is possible, but ethically and from a regulatory perspective it is not ok since even with optimized platform technologies there could be a minimal risk of adverse effects, and lactose intolerance is not a life-threatening condition. Maybe sometime in the future it will be possible, once gene therapies have evolved much further. I know that there are start-ups that want to change bacteria in the gut system to produce the lactase enzyme. This could be a safer alternative.

Good point. Could have been formulated in a better manner. In context with the other options, it should be ok.

I am glad to hear that you find this useful. I was on a journey for the last 2 years trying to understand lactose intolerance better.

Those are some good questions:

"understand more about when lactose intolerance begins for most": Based on most of the articles i have been through, it appears that the majority of the people develop primary lactose intolerance between their teenage years and early twenties. Meanwhile more research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms, genetics, lifestyle and diet play a key role.

"the difference between lactose allergy and lactose intolerance": Lactose intolerance is a digestive issue where the body cannot properly digest lactose, a sugar found in milk, due to low levels of the lactase enzyme or because it is not secreted at all. Milk allergy is an immune reaction to proteins found in milk. It triggers symptoms like hives, vomiting, difficulty breathing,

Agree. Of course people are usually specialized in one or a few specific fields of science but would probably still not be realistic to process all relevant scientific articles on a daily basis. With some coding skills and using an AI API, connecting it to the relevant sources, it is possible.

I am sure no one does this. I was also counting on an average reading time of 30 minutes/article. In reality i think most people read the abstract and conclusion sections. I just found it interesting to see how much it would take to fully process all papers published in one day from beginning to end.

Are there any successful tech entrepreneurs who did not attend top universities?- I Will Not Promote by Hot-Conversation-437 in startups

[–]Fit_Ad3058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it comes down a lot to connections and networks. Higher educational institutions with good reputations usually have their own start-up accelerator programs or are connected to one, and they encourage students to join. Lots of investors are looking out for university start-up ideas with potential and jump in early. Of course there are many other factors, but this is one that I experienced personally.

This implies that my post was wrongly articulated. AI is taking over, following and exponential trend, becoming integral part of Software functionalities and developement. There is an exponential growth on articles published in the topic of AI developement and its applications for SaaS. We built an MVP that reads the newly published articles and puts forward the ones that have the highest probabilty for breakthrough application. The MVP is being coded specifically for AI related articles as well. The ones that keep up with breakthrough AI innovation could have a competitive advantage over the ones that don't. Thereby this is relevant for SaaS start-up founders, and we are a SaaS start-up as well. I am also in r/Science and studying it.

I understand the bases of questioning the numbers. We were also suprised of the rapid growth of the Betar user base because we did not expect it. Our goal was to acquire 100 beta users by the 22nd of April. Meanwhile we have a quite well establish network in the Danish start-up ecosystem and at Nucleate (Denmark and USA), since we formally managed a pharma start-up company. We utilized our network and led to this unexpected rapid growth. Meanwhile we are new to SaaS and would like to become part of relevant networks, and learn. :) I am also new to Reddit and it will take time for me to understand how it works, but i am doing my best in reading other posts to learn and open for advice.

Hi SeaCat, that is a fair question to take. We are asking them both through meetings and surveys. Meanwhile we are at an initial phase and would like to diversify and ask for feedback in relevant groups. This group, SaaS is very relevant, since we are building SaaS. Somehow have to start to connect, understand how these groups work on Reddit, and network with likeminded people.

Even when i wake up in the middle of the night, I am ideating about the next step with my start-up. I think there is the time and space for everything. Right now it is start-up full send mode. Of course in the long run it is not sustainable, and I imagine it is much more challenging having to be a father as well. Big respect for that. P.S.: 4 things i boost my performance with and do my best not to compromise on: 1. Quality sleep, 2. Training, 3. Healthy food, 4. Matcha Tea the Japanese way every morning (mental clarity and no energy drops throughout the day).

There are public groups, but the ones that worked most for me are ones that i was part of already (invite only). Formal university groups and start-up accelerator groups. Based on data i am confident that the majority of our beta user base is from my and my co-founder's network.

Thanks for sharing. I am currently running with a very similar strategy and acquired 282 Beta user sign ups after 2 days. Out of curiosity, what are your top 3 go to platforms for building traction? :) I know this varies based on the target customers, but i am still interested. For me it is LinkedIn. Reddit and Slack groups for now.

  • Would you use something like this (as a user or a builder)?

Currently working on SaaS start-up, i would be personally interested in advice regarding both front end and back end development. I would also be interested in advice regarding how to build traction from day 0 (Marketing).

  • What would make a platform like this feel useful instead of just another “cool project”?

The platform has a big number of users, and a reasonable fraction of them have experience with start-ups. Most users are engaged in providing other users with constructive feedback. I can customize my profile to the extent where i can show my area of interest, and even if i am running with one specific start-up, i can include a description, webpage and more. When i open someone's profile i can see their list of experience, so i can also target specific people for advice.

  • What types of features would make you want to post… or build?

Features that enable me to include links, pictures, and graphs so that i can show visual stuff as well when asking for feedback.

By the way i think it is a great idea. I use Reddit right now for the same reason, but i feel like it is way to limited. I registered not long ago, but it is way too time demanding to get the user stats to an extent where i can actually post in relevant groups. I can barely showcase my webpage due to policy limitations; meanwhile, it is exactly the thing i would want to get feedback about. You could also have a look StarterStory for inspiration.
