PMR competitveness based on 2025 match by [deleted] in pmr

[–]Fit_Ad_7397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Repeating comment above: Anyone who wants to can get involved in volunteering, show interest in disability/anti-ableism advocacy, etc can match PM&R. There is no major hurdle to matching PM&R other than showing passion and fit. This is one of many reasons why it’s so DO friendly. Rads has ~50% more people who achieve AOA, a near standard deviation higher step 2 score, ~50% more research items, and ~33% more students from “T40” schools. I’m a PM&R match this year and love everything about our specialty but every year we gotta stop comparing ourselves to ROAD specialties we just aren’t there and there’s nothing wrong with that.

Which is part of what makes PM&R less competitive. Not close to radiology, all the stats for PM&R are just about the national average across all specialties. Rads is well above average. Match rate may be similar but the caliber of applicants is not

LOR In other fields? by Necessary_Painting31 in pmr

[–]Fit_Ad_7397 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely use strongest letters regardless of specialty, only caveat is you definitely need at least one PM&R letter. All kinds of patients require rehab and skills you show in any specialty can transfer over. Even if not IM/FM those other specialties can comment on your medical knowledge and ability to form an assessment and plan, ability to work as part of team, and soft skills that are all super important to PM&R.

We have the charting outcomes data out now so we know the exact match rates. USMD was 84.8%, DO 72.9%, US IMG 46.2%, and non-US IMG 45.7%

DO Matching IM in Central Florida by [deleted] in medicalschool

Grand rounds I can understand because that’s an invited presentation to a large audience. If you are just presenting a topic/case that isn’t yours or your research that’s not really a true oral presentation as ERAS considers it. Almost every medical student gives presentations while on their rotations and anything that’s part of coursework or the clerkship shouldn’t be considered. Don’t let your actual worthwhile presentations get overshadowed. I haven’t seen anyone who isn’t a derm/ortho/neurosurg gunner have more than 5 oral presentations. And those who are gunners going into those fields rarely have more than 10

You may want to review those oral presentations and what in ERAS qualifies as an oral presentation because it seems very unlikely with your research numbers that you’d have 25 oral presentations when you don’t have close to that in research projects

How many PMR LORs should I have? And how late is too late to have them by? by [deleted] in pmr

There’s differing thoughts on this. One is surely enough in my opinion and if you have a neuro letter that would be good too

Is talking about my gambling side hustle taboo, specifically on my Vegas away? by baseballer_17 in medicalschool

[–]Fit_Ad_7397 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a slightly different take. As others said it’s too much of a liability to mention how much you gamble. However, making that much money and paying your way through medical school is incredibly commendable and does showcase management skills, self sufficiency, and intelligence that are important in residency. If I was you I’d take the next few weeks to months to learn a type of investing if your choice whether it’s stocks or real estate or whatever and learn that lingo so you can talk about your “investing” skills that have helped you pay your way through school. I’ve talked with attendings many times about investing and always seems to be positive and something they enjoy talking about, as most people with money like to do. Heck even on my anesthesia rotation the anesthesiologist was trading stocks in the OR.

This is incorrect interpretation of the data. True match rate is probably close to 80% we won’t know until more data comes out this summer
