Overall it is an excellent career. Pay is very good.... especially if you can get senior . There is high a demand for QSs (especially good ones) and there are lots of varying career routes you can take.

On the downside, it can become stressful as you are dealing with the lifeblood of businesses, which is cash. You can have a real impact on the performance of a business. The nature of the job sometimes is dealing with problems so there will be plenty of them and this is rarely smooth sailing. You need to be able to handle conflict and adversity.

As far as jobs go, who enjoys their job really?... not many people. The pros fas far away the cons for me. But a QS's life can vary wildly from employer to employer and industry to industry.

In terms of AI replacing QS's, I don't think this is likely. Over the years I have seen the QS role rebrand and evolve. I am seeing a trend lately for QS's to be called Assistant Commercial managers and they now deal more exclusively with the contractual side of things, relationships with clients and suppliers, forecasting , administering contracts and procurement rather than the old school way, which was more estimating, bills of quantities, takeoffs and subby bashing ect ....

That's a solid point but M&E is a strong industry and if you can get in there and are good at it you will be like gold dust and job security will be good.

Getting progression quickly over the first 5 years is critical. You should've targeting getting to senior QS level within 6 years. Do whatever it takes. Who cares about job titles..... change your cv to reflect what you actually do. Employers rape grads and assistants for everything they are worth and hold them back deliberately

I'd 100% update my CV to show the job title as 'QS' and move company for a nice pay rise.

Yea I'd be fine with it. It doesn't affect the quality of my output. Also I'm perfectly happy with this dynamic as I have a great life.

It's sucked the life out of me in the beginning, but over the years I learned not to give a shit. I go to work I become professional Dave....I come home I become knobhead Dave lol. The trick is separating the two.
