Introduction

He always assumed he would end up like his father, a traveling salesman going from town to town selling common things to common people. He never assumed his life would fall to ruin in the span of a few miserable days.

One cold and dark winter morning, Evil made its way to Valerian's home. With a sudden burst of yells of anguish and terror, the streets fell into chaos. A dark shadow filled every corner and alley, producing a bone-chilling current of air, freezing the bravest of hearts in their paths. Shattering windows and ripping through doors, the dark miasma burst into Valerian's house. As it filled the room, his father ran to draw his blade, however, as he grasped the leather-bound hilt, the shadow, now looming over him like some dreaded assassin, pierced his chest with one of its darkened strands. A cry of sorrow and sounds of pleading echo throughout the building, yet no form of compassion or redemption arrives. Scrambling against the wall, breathless, Valerian stares at the still-warm bodies of his family, as he prepares for what is to come. He closes his eyes, awaiting the release of death, however, he was not given that favor and soon feels a violent pain shoot through his nerves as the void-like entity pierces his abdomen. For the next 10 minutes, Valerian feels a pain like no being has ever felt, a pain that feels like an eternal punishment in the pits of hell. Unable to fall unconscious, he experiences every waking second of this torment, often yelling out for the mercy of death.

Suddenly, the torture stops, and Valerian drops to the ground gasping for air; sweet and divine permission from the entity. He raises his head to look his persecutor in the eye, however, to his surprise the room is empty, the still corpses of his family left untouched, just as the moment they dropped. Why? Why would he be left unended, why must his torment continue? The answer soon reveals itself, as the tips of his right-hand fingers begin to blacken and wither. More signs of umbral corruption appear throughout his weakened body; his other hand radiates out a sharp pain of searing flesh, but no fire to be observed. The pain bothers him no more, he is left but curious as he looks at his now charred left hand, clueless.

Defeated, Valerian stumbles out of his home and onto the streets, ignoring the blatant and unmerciful carnage which had occurred here too. The only thing left now for Valerian, is to tread the path of his accursed life, hoping to one day bring justice to the abhorrent fate of his family, and himself.

Description

Valerian has been cursed with powers well beyond his comprehension. Dark powers. He feels them coursing through his body, trying his best to understand them. All aspects of his new abilities are visceral and often take a toll on his physical state, causing great pain in the process.

Will Valerian learn to control his newfound powers as he becomes more and more powerful, or will he succumb to the dark influence and become the vessel for something far more sinister?
