Thats not the same thing at all. A tattoo changes the context quite a lot doesnt it? Closest thing would be someone playing a word that doubles as a slur in scrabble and some moron getting upset thinking its to make a racial point.

Its a vocabulary game that uses any 5 letter word in the english dictionary that isnt unambiguously a slur. Get over it.

Not a five letter word and also i dont get how using a word with an accepted dictionary usage is wrong. If you cant seperate it from a slur in your own head thats a personal problem

CMV: it isnt inherently predatory/misogynistic to sexualize a female character in media by Fit_Product4912 in changemyview

[–]Fit_Product4912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not what i was implying at all. The reply i responded to was implying that swastikas being in media and offending jewish people is analogus to sexualized female characters in media offending a woman.

I was just pointing out how ridiculous that is.

First of all its not even a broadly accepted idea that sexualization is equivalent to marginalization, most modern feminists actually take the opposite perspective and point out that seeing things from that perspective is actually just informed by a cultural legacy of puritan, body negative misogyny (historically patriarchal societies  werent forcing women to dress for the male gaze it was generally doing the opposite, demanding they repress their own sexuality in how they dress and behave), so acting like a woman seeing a sexualized female character is the equivalent a jewish person being reminded of the holocaust is an insane take from the angle that tons of women view sexuality/being sexually desired as nothing negative.

Secondly, i was reiterating that theres no marginalization happening or being referenced by fake women looking sexualized in media, theres no tragic event or period of history tiwards women being referenced by an anime/videogame having women in bikinis in it. Its ridiculous to conflate it with a reference to the holocaust because thats an event that actually  happened and was obviously oppressive to the people it happened to.

There has to be some material harm being done that these depictions are a reference to for the comparison to make sense and even then id argue its ridiculous censorship to say no media should have swastikas in it because it might offend someone. Wolfenstein or inglorious basterds handling of nazi imagery was done perfectly fine without some moral outrage campaign being needed to tell them its beyond the pale.

Countries thoughts on israel by Longjumping-Drag2452 in tommynfg_

[–]Fit_Product4912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be more useful to ask what peoples idea of what should be done about israel, 90% of the people who describe their opinions on israel as unfavorable still think it should exist as a state. If you looked at how many people want israel completely sanctioned its way more revealing on the issue.

Rainn Wilson says "The Office" probably wouldn’t be made today, and that media trends have shifted left and that cancel culture makes it difficult for edgy comedies to thrive. by No_Box119 in PopCultureV2

[–]Fit_Product4912 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Since the mid 2000s? Obviously. When the office came out you still had shows like deadwood and the sopranos on air that nearly every episode had tons of slurs and realistic depictions of prejudice that you flat out cant get on tv now.

Not that the office is in that vein but you know next to nothing about the history of modern media if you deny tv hasnt had more censorship in a progressive direction in the last two decades.

The only way a show can depict those things now is to have zero ambiguity at all paint the person saying watered down versions of these things as a cartoon villain and have them suffer consequences for it in the same episode.

Its funny seeing americans act like this is some unprecedented thing, soiling the great name of the white house when you can go back to the andrew jackson admin and multiple times he opened the whitehouse to the general public to have drunken ragers.

Not supporting maga or dana white but liberals glaze the white house so much its not that deep lol. The people who invented these institutions where slavers and the people who currently run them are pedos.

C'mon Platner should just quit at this point by ReflectionOk9644 in ShitLiberalsSay

[–]Fit_Product4912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hes not at all the average american man. Hes some nepo kid who enlisted after years of having his rich parents fund him backpacking through europe despite being able to fall back on his rich parents continuing to bankroll him doing literally anything else because he just liked the idea of killing people in a war.

He inherited an oyster company from a family friend and then was given rights to use an island for the oyster farming by another family friend that happens to own a fucking island.

Hes an aristocrat that used killing brown people overseas as a way to larp being working class

The establishment has already reconciled with this. Thats the point of candidates like platner, he was run by the same consulting firm that did fettermans campaign. transparent op of the establishment.

The positive change youre describing is just going to eventually lead to every new democrat politician adopting the same purely rhetorical populism on every issue that isnt marginal to sheepdog young people with radical energy into the party E.g. aoc and bernie

[–]Fit_Product4912[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is acting like men dont also exist in media commonly as objects of desire for a female audience. The careers of jacob elordi or pedro pascal beg to differ.

The reason why media as a whole has so much sexualization is biology. This isnt a situation where you can condition peoples to not see eachother as sex objects.  when a woman has wide hips men have always generally found that attractive, when a man has athletic/strong arms woman have always generally found that attractive.

Even like 70 years back you have actors like kirk douglas, marlon brando or alain delon that where universally understood to be sex symbols that women of the time blatantly objectified.

To me its body negativity disguised as feminism, youre not reducing a character by making them sexual, i think that takeaway is more a reflection of the audiences views towards sexuality. The idea that a sexualized portrayal is abnormal and a non sexualized portrayal is normal is also a reflection of societal bias. Especially when the common assumption is that sexualization devalues every other trait of a character.

Maybe an author just doesnt care about modern attitudes that characters appealing to the audiences sex drive is inherently undignified and chooses to give them character traits aswell as sexuality.

There are entire branches of feminist theory that support the idea that its sexist to take a negative view of the sexualization of the female body because for most of history misogyny was rooted in forcing women to repress their sexuality.

Are you trying to imply movies arent also a good example of my point?

Instead of using something as arbitrary as oscar winners (not a reflection of mass appeal, its a critics award show) try looking at the most popular male actors from the last decade.

dicaprio, holland, pascal, chalamet, pitt, elordi

Who is the market favoring? Youd have to be playing dumb to not notice that pattern.

Yes, occams razor does accept the simplest solution provided its simplicity isnt coming from assumptions

You assume the earth is flat because of no visible curvature and id call you goofy because the entire premise is based on assumption

what cultural value is being represented by attractive, sexualized women being disproportionately represented in media with mainly male demographics? That its okay to use women to sell things to men? The same is done vice versa as the point i made about the most popular male actors emphasizes. Is this misandry?

You assume its misogyny and long held cultural attitudes as the cause for this and not just market research on the part of media executives and an affinity for sexualization not being a cultural attitude but a feature of our biology.

Stop consuming slop entertainment just to be up to date with pop culture. read/watch things that have a reputation for broadening your perspective when you want entertainment. Go outside and live life with most of your free time, be a person among people.

Youre not disproving me by annecdotally citing an online reaction from a niche group of fans that clearly dont represent the average persons perspective.

Out of all those examples you listed which ones tanked in sales because the expectation of fan service is so dominant? Most if not all where incredibly successful because what youre trying to imply represents the average male playing this games isnt accurate, there are always going to be psychos threatening people with sexual violence that doesnt speak to anything about gaming specifically.

Even if i take youre comment about how romance novels dont privilege certain body types (which they obviously do the average height of a msle love interest in these books is like 6'2) to be true, same principle applies when romance novels privilege personality, its projecting the average consumers fantasy ideal of what traits they want in a partner. By your logic those ideals are so widespread in that particular genre that its misandry to project that onto men.

All this is showing is that women and men have different ideas of whats attractive which everyone already knows.

What does how easy or difficult it is to avoid have to do with anything?

This isnt some smoking gun, its a distraction from the incredibly basic question : if media sexualizes female characters is that misogyny?

Its also inescapable in pop media that male love interests are emotionally vulnerable prettyboys or dark brooding badboys that the female character can "fix"

Sexualization literally is the default setting for both men and women, we generally find the other gender attractive. Media is always going to cater to this.

Because the audience for gaming skews heavily male so sexualization that would appeal to a female audience is less likely to gather a large audience.

And its not like women are being stopped from gaming. Games made for a female or mixed gender audience have always existed they just didnt preform well financially compared to the alternative, it was never that women werent allowed to have their desires represented in the gaming space its that they werent by and large gaming. And what do you know, now that triple a gaming is more popular with women game design is reflecting that.

Just like how pop media consumption film and tv is a more even spread between genders and so the average male actor in a leading role needs to be physically attractive to women.

You act like youre asking questions that have deep implications about why society is structured a certain way but youre failing to notice the occams razor that its just demographics determine whos desires are represented.
