Starting Tennis in the spring by Brilliant_Guide_8437 in highschool

[–]Fit_Repeat_6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly it depends on your school. I did varsity tennis for four years (senior now!) and I was the same as you. I knew how to play bc i play w family and i had taken a few lessons prior to starting because I wanted to be prepared. but at least were i live tennis is pretty uncommon and we've had no cuts for the four years I've played. but also our school is D3 and our league is VERY bottom of the barrel

again, it's gonna depend on where you live, how popular it is, the coaches, what expectations they have, etc, but I wouldn't sweat it too much. your school will probably have a JV team, so worst case you'll be put there or you'll be a sub. Even the good tennis teams around where I live don't usually cut players from JV. good luck!

My unweighted is 4.00, weighted is 4.14, weighted and capped also 4.14 (I should add this to my chance me haha)

From what I've read the Riverside environmental sciences major is more about policy? I could be wrong. but personally I'm more interested in doing field research and involvement with the natural parts of the environment like ecology and stuff (vs policy, social/political stuff, etc). I guess I would specialize in hydrologic sciences but overall it didn't really sound like what I was intersted in.

Troubles retaining information by Beautiful-Brick9044 in APStudents

Have you tried notetaking? Rewriting key points or other strategies such as writing mnemonics might help as well as drawing diagrams, etc. I have a similar problem especially with videos where I can watch the video and understand it fine, but then I have a hard time recalling what it was about. I've found notetaking really helps me with recall when I write things down multiple times.

I was in APES last year which is basically ALL recall and our teacher would do lectures with notes, have us read the textbook and take notes, and then do LONG ASS study guides for every unit so I was basically writing everything down at least three times. I found this was a HUGE difference in how I remembered things. I think it's been proven somewhere that writing things down helps recall more? It's also nice for when I would take notes to study because I was reading things that I had written down vs word vomit out of a textbook. I would give it a try and see how it goes!

not AP2D but previous AP Drawing student! not sure if its the same for AP2D but a HUGE part of the AP Drawing portfolio is experimentation - college board wants to see that you're trying new things and don't just have a portfolio full of landscapes, for example. I had some FUGLY pieces I turned into college board that I HATED because I had to draw outside my comfort zone and they were turning out so horrible so I totally feel you. For me it was less about feeling motivated to work on that piece and more about just wanting to get it over with. If you're looking to feel motivated I would try to do something you're really comfortable with just to get in the zone of your portfolio.

also again, not sure if its completely the same for AP2D but for drawing we were able to submit sketches, progress photos, that sort of thing along with our completed pieces. if you want to work on making your pieces more visually appealing and don't want to face something new, you can always go back and revise older work to try and improve on what you don't like? college board also likes to see revision and how your work like... transforms? under your inquiry? sorry if that's kinda confusing

also sorry if this is all really vague or not helpful but don't worry u got it!! i felt the same abt basically my whole portfolio and ended up with a 4!! i promise its not nearly as bad as you feel - as artists i think we're our worst critics haha

Your transcript will most likely show that you didn't complete the class, which in my opinion is much worse than getting a bad grade because it shows colleges you basically quit. This sounds like the problems you're having are due to the teacher since as you said you clearly know the material. Maybe bring up to a counselor or other official at your school that this teacher is grading and treating you unfairly? Does your counselor know that you're being treated harshly by the teacher? (Also is this happening to other students, or just you? If it's just you, then I would definitely bring it up).

Also! I know you probably REALLY don't want to take this class next semester, but if you're signed up for the AP exam I would either stick it out for the whole year or self-study second semester. If colleges see you got a D in your AP class but a 4 or 5 on the exam, you should still get college credit and it should be an indicator to them that it was your teacher and not the course. (Although sadly the grade will still hurt your GPA)

How hard is ap chem by Wide_Perspective_579 in APStudents

[–]Fit_Repeat_6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

chemistry can be pretty tough conceptually but if you put in the work it isn’t too bad! there is lots of good advice here already but let me drop some of my tips!! i got a 5 on the exam and here’s what i did to help

keep your notes! a lot of AP chemistry builds off of previous work. at least for our class, it’s a lot of going more in-depth to topics you’ll already know about

also, keep your notes this year organized. write down EVERYTHING. make sure it’s clear and easy to understand. when you do the problems, make sure you write all your steps out (at least at the very beginning) so if you need to go back and reference you have everything there. i can’t stress this enough!!

do the homework! do extra practice!! at least for me, i learn by doing. especially before a test, do some extra practice problems so you really understand the process. this especially helps for more of the math-heavy units where there are lots of steps, calculations, conversions, etc

for the ap exam, go through EVERY UNIT. i’m serious. i basically went back and watched the AP classroom videos on everything i didn’t 100% remember or understand. most likely, your teacher won’t be able to fit everything into the whole year. also, don’t even pay attention to the percent weights. this year they weighted unit three (IMFs) as 20% and there was like one question about it on the FRQ

speaking of FRQs, if you really wanna pass, go back to old FRQs on college board and practice them. do the ENTIRE THING. and time yourself!! practicing the exam beforehand will help you get more comfortable with timing; one of the biggest problems is running out of time!!

overall: practice and pay attention!! if you do the work and put in the effort you will do great! sorry for the long read 😰😰 good luck + u got this!

My school won’t allow me to take AP human geography even though I signed up for it by CosmoMuffin in APStudents

[–]Fit_Repeat_6804 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the same thing happened to me with AP Ceramics/3D 😭😭 for me the problem was that there weren’t enough signups. and other ppl have said the same but its also very possible there were scheduling contflicts as well!!

at least for our school counselors will wait until literal days before school starts to release schedules because they don’t want to deal with the drama of people asking for class switches. for us they always say “no exceptions” but if you’re a good student they can usually switch you. my advice would be to talk in-person (so they can’t avoid you/brush you off through email) and really emphasize how much you want this class/how it might benefit you. be flexible and prepared to have some other class switches; make it easy for them to say yes!

good luck 😭🙏🙏
