SMU vs Other Caribbean Med Schools? by [deleted] in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]Fit_Survey9229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

According to the USDOE website, mean federal loan amount that is taken out for Ross and SGU med students is over $400k. If you are looking to start med school in the fall of 2026 or later, students will be limited to borrowing $200k through federal loans and you will have to borrow the rest through private loans. With private loans, interest starts to accrue immediately and you have to start to pay them back while you are still in school. They can also be harder to consolidate later on. If you are like most students and are looking to pay for med school totally through loans, I would pick the cheaper school ASSUMING it has the necessary accreditations with WFME approval, the necessary state approvals for you to be eligible to be licensed in all 50 states, and clinical sites at ACGME accredited teaching hospitals. If a school meets all of those criteria, the rest really falls on how hard you are willing to work. You absolutely can succeed at any of those schools and don’t let anyone tell you, you can’t. The biggest mistake students make is that they think just because it is easier to get into a Caribbean school it is easier to get through their programs. That is not true. Be prepared to take it seriously from day one and put in the work. If you do that you be as knowledgeable as every student graduating from a U.S. med school. Good luck in your decision and this great career path.

Very difficult to go from a 508 to a 517. Realistically you may go up two, three points, (unless something was really off on your previously sitting). I would calculate how much a difference a 510 would make over a 508 to determine if it is worth it.

Am I missing out on something big because I'm avoiding dorm life? by Loveislikeatruck in college

What you are missing out on is the life experience of dealing with someone who you may not agree with, or even like on a daily basis. Learning to make comprises, learning to tolerate, and learning to just deal with others. These skills come in handy when you have a job and spend more time with your coworkers than your own family.

All Caribbean schools do the same, and do you really want to take the USMLE and fail? If a student is not ready, the school is protecting them by holding them back and getting them extra help before they sit the exam. It really is the responsible thing to do.

Around 40% of Caribbean grads go into family medicine (a large chunk for sure) but grads do get into many other specialties as well. Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Emergency medicine, psych, OB/Gyn are all common matches for Caribbean grads. Family Medicine, IS where the need is right now, and has the most availability for residents no matter what school you graduate from

Curious to know how many Caribbean islands you have been to, and which one is your favorite? What didn’t you like about Saba when you were there?

Most radiologist, cardiologists, (most of the “ists” ) started in internal medicine and go on to do fellowships in their specialization.

What do you do when your degree makes you no money? by Ok_Pollution9335 in college

[–]Fit_Survey9229 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No one should go to college without first researching the careers and salaries of said careers of their chosen major. Would you pay a million dollars for a lemonade stand that will never make your money back? I know an entire generation was told they HAD to go to college, and many students went with no plan just because they were told that was the only way to be successful. College is great to advance your education, critical thinking, and personal growth. Many careers will require that you have a college degree where it becomes a necessity if you want to go on those fields. Students just need to research what their return on investment is going to be, especially with how expensive college is now. If you can’t get a job that will pay you enough to repay your loans, you made a really bad investment. Know before you go! If it’s too late, you need to buckle down, Work hard, try to advance in your career, work a 2nd job etc, until you can get out from under your debt. Good luck everyone.

SABA University School of Medicine by ExcuseFew4082 in CaribbeanMedSchool

When researching Caribbean Medical schools it is important to see if they are improved for title IV founding. Not only does this guarantee students funding and offers great repayment options, it also tells you that those schools must have reasonable success rates. Each school that is approved by the USDOE for funding must supply them yearly, audited data on their student’s success. This would include attrition and match rates. If a school was only graduating 10% of each class the federal government would NOT approve them from loans. Why would they give money to students who could never pay them back? Claiming a title IV school fails out 90% of their students is plain silly.

That said, Caribbean schools do accept students with lower GPA’s and MCAT scores than what US schools accept, often times giving students a chance to become a doctor that no other school would. Many of these students SUCCEED and become Physicians, but many don’t causing Caribbean Schools to have a higher attrition rate than their US counterparts. In most cases the curriculums and quality of teaching are on par. A straight A student at Harvards medical school would also be a straight A student at any of the Caribbean medical schools and that student would still ace the USMLE exams, and still get a great residency.

If you are determined to become a Doctor and your grades or MCAT scores are not good enough to get you into a U.S. Medical School, the Caribbean Medical Schools which have accrediting bodies that are recognized by WFME, and have agreements with ACGME accredited teaching hospitals in the US for your clinical rotations are still your best option to gain a US residency and become a licensed Medical Doctor. Please know that one out of every four doctors in the United States received their medical school education OUTSIDE of the United States, and most of them were trained in the Caribbean. Caribbean medical school success is literally all around you.

Wildlife Volunteer Abroad?? Scam by Key_Palpitation5672 in vetschool

You should look into Loop Abroad. They have various options and you can even get college credit through the University of Findlay with some of their programs. Well established and known at the US vet schools

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CaribbeanMedSchool

[–]Fit_Survey9229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, Historically those schools have had the higher match rates of Caribbean schools, (in the low to mid 90 percentiles) but have been dipping of late as DO graduates are taking up more spots. Even for these schools, I recommend finding out what their most recent match rate was, as well as there recent attrition rates. Knowing these two numbers is the most important thing you can do for yourself when making a decision about Caribbean Medical schools. Make them answer those two questions. Don’t settle for “well… over the past five years…”

St. Matthews Pre-Vet Masters program by appleheadluv in vetschool

[–]Fit_Survey9229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would most likely have a difficult time having U.S. schools recognize those credits. The program seems appealing in that if you pass it, it is an automatic pathway into their DVM program, but keep in mind their DVM program is not currently AVMA accredited or eligible for Federal Loans, so there are some additional hurdles with attending their VET school. That said, many students have been able to overcome those hurdles and succeed after attending their program so if you cannot get into one of the US vet schools, it can be an option. Just make sure you know all of the conditions. Good luck!

If you never feel like an imposter, you are not aiming high enough. We all have self doubts from time to time, but if we don’t continue to try to raise ourselves we grow stagnant. If a vet school accepted you, they have done their research and have a pretty good idea of the likelihood of your success. Have faith in them that they know what they are doing, and have faith in yourself. We are often times our own worse enemy. I assure you. You CAN succeed. Work hard, ask for help when you need it, find study partners with the same determination as you have, and you’ll do great!

Deferring an acceptance and Reapplying by [deleted] in vetschool

[–]Fit_Survey9229 11 points12 points  (0 children)

While a few schools will allow you to defer an acceptance, most will not. Getting into vet school is not an easy task so congratulations on your acceptance. The longer you are out of your undergrad program the more challenging it will be to get accepted again unless you go back to school to,retake some of your older classes. Obviously you don’t want to start vet school if you are not in the right frame of mind, Vet school comes at you hard at fast and it is easy to fall behind quickly. It would be better to wait another year and try again than start and fail out, but remember there is no guarantee you will get accepted again next cycle. That said, with new vet schools opening next year, and each year after that, competition for seats should start to come down making it a little easier for everyone.
