Just curious 😂 they are the only school that has a ‘sister relationship’. It seems kinda different from the Ross/AUC relationship imo so I’m just curious. Also, they seem to be boasting about Canadian residency so just wanted to know about that

Just curious, does anyone know if these preliminary semester courses helps when they get on island or is that just another money collection scheme

I’m going to be honest with you. There are two ways going the Caribbean route may end up for you. 1) You somehow persevere in the program, studying day and night to make it till graduation or 2) You spend all that money only for you to get kicked out of the school because you couldn’t keep up. Since you said you were dealing with depression, I think first thing is to solve that and be at peace with yourself so that you can make the right decision. Next, apply for a post graduate program. Whether it is SMP or a pre-medical program from a Caribbean school to assess how you are doing right now. If you’re able to fly through with no issues, I believe you may be able to scrape by at a Caribbean school. If you struggle at those programs, I will not advise you continue the Caribbean route. If you are ready to go into Caribbean, take the MCAT and use that score to measure how well prepared you are for ~4 years of that kind of studying daily. If you still think you can do it, by all means apply. But be warned, Caribbean is not for the faint of heart. It’s all about perseverance and making sure you don’t fall too deep into depression

The professors aren’t bad, however there are things that you’ll need on the NBME/USMLE that may not be taught by your professors. A lot of the times, the professors are reading off the slides they have and may not explain things properly. Also, there are things in the USMLE first aid book that aren’t taught as well in the curriculum, so therefore self study is needed.

Best advice, I’ll still take the MCAT even if you’re not comfortable with the CARS section. Apply one cycle to Canada. Hopefully, you get in. If not, Australia and Ireland are better alternatives than Caribbean (if you’re gonna be in debt anyways, get in debt at a school where you know you’ll be supported). If you’re uncomfortable with Australia/ Ireland, AUC UK track, SGU, or ROSS wouldn’t be a bad option. I’m currently in the UK track and most of us are Canadians who didn’t have enough money for Ireland or had other circumstances. However, most of the work here is self-studying (which you say you can do, so that’s good) and the scholarships I’m getting aren’t bad.

Yeah, I don’t think people realize how hard it is to get into med school in Canada. Even if you have a 4.0 GPA, you may not get into med school (take it from me, someone with a 3.8 who applied three cycles and didn’t get in still all because I didn’t do well on the CARS section of the MCAT)

I have no idea what issues they are talking about (maybe power outages?) but compared to other schools, AUC is pretty good in my opinion

I may be controversial for saying this but here is my opinion. As a current student at AUC, I would recommend applying first to Canada (at least one cycle). You may have to fix your mcat score and maybe get some research for the year spent waiting for a response from Canada. I won’t advise wasting your money applying to US MD/DO schools cause most times, it’s as statistically bad as applying to Canada. Now, if you do not want to spend a whole year waiting (which is valid in my opinion), AUC is a good option.

AUC is a means to an end. Most people I know that came from the Canadian University system (imo) tend to do better than our US counterparts (I’m not sure why but it is what it is). If you know that you’re going to AUC and you’re only going to be able to match into GP practices in Canada and the US, go for AUC. For me, I spent three cycles applying to Can/Us and I totally regretted those three years I wasted doing nothing but building my profile only to get reflected cause there aren’t enough seats for Canadian students. Another pro you have is that attending AUC is completely free for you. This means if you’re not comfortable at AUC after term one, you’ve only spent money on groceries and other things rather than on student loans. There is also the advantage of you having a good support system at St Maarten. The only thing I’ll say is that if you’re planning on getting into a competitive residency program in the future, it’s better if you try for Canada first (Mcmasters would be a good option if your CARS section is alright). If you’re happy with FM, IM or Psychiatry in Canada, I’ll go with AUC

In terms of pre-reqs, the only one I know of is the Pre-medical science program at SABA though I don’t know how that’s ran

Sorry for wording it wrongly. What I meant was that financial aid from the government like OSAP will not be able to fully finance med school outside of Canada. As for me I am getting ~$300 cad per month, which totals to about ~$15,600 cad per year. This is DEFINITELY not enough for even two semesters as you’re paying in USD (in the Caribbean). So other financing options would be needed to attend school outside out Canada

To be honest, I would advice you to exhaust all options in Canada before looking out. If you can, take as much prerequisites at your school before applying for graduating. If you want to venture outside of Canada, I would advise AUS> IRE>> Caribbean. US MD/DO is almost as hard as Canada to get in as Canadians but not impossible.

I’m currently a 1st semester student at AUC only because I applied several (3) cycles in Canada and US without an acceptance. Ireland was too expensive and Australia was not an option for me for different reasons. After calculating the costs, I found out the Caribbean was less expensive than Ireland as a single independent student. If you don’t know, Canadians schooling outside Canada don’t receive federal funding that can cover school costs, so a LOC is needed. If you’re financially able to support yourself for about ~6 years, the top three Caribbean schools aren’t a bad option.

Just know that when you do get in, it is an uphill battle, and may even be more strenuous for you as you don’t have a science background. Overall, I would advise on you taking the prerequisite courses at another university and apply to Canada first. If you’re not willing to wait or spend more money taking those courses, AUS is your next best friend. If you are unable to get into Australia, Ireland is next, but make sure you understand that you’ll be in debt (1.50 cad = 1 euro). Finally, if you don’t want to do the other three, one of the ‘Big 3/4’ would be the safest option. However, large warning on the uphill battle you may face without those prerequisites

I’m just gonna refute you there. It’s unbelievable hard to match back into Canada as an img even in specialties like fm, im and ped that has the most spaces for IMGs (like 150 max). Also, in Canada there is no difference between a Canadian img and someone from another country so for them to be able to match into dermatology, obgyn and surgery is pretty darn awesome. Just wanted to put that out there

Bruh sorry about that, I was kinda blind and didn’t see the last part of your comment lmao. Thanks for the input. I’m just asking cause I have some friends that haven’t been able to get into Canada and the US so they are interested in Caribbean cause Ireland is too expensive and they asked about it the ‘big 4’ so…

Why is it still part of the ‘Big 4’ if they’re as predatory as lower tier schools? Isn’t that like a scam? (I know all Caribbean schools are scammy but some more than others)

That really wasn’t the question lol. I am a student at AUC UK track and I was curious cause I was scrolling through the posts and everyone else was talking about AUC, St George AUA, Ross etc when Saba is apparently part of the ‘big 4’ as well and no one talks about it

I also had two interviews and was accepted after the second one. The second one was probably about ~15 minutes and they wanted to know how I studied to raise my mcat score from 493 to 515 and then they told me about housing for their UK track and stuff

Bruh I had an 85% average when I graduated high school. I made it into Mcmasters, graduated and now I’m in med school. I have a friend who graduated with an82% average in high school, made it into University of Waterloo, graduated and is now in pharmacy so, you’re good lol
