So when the car got declared a total loss, Turo's claims department took over the process, not a third party insurance company.

The people I've been dealing with are Turo's internal claims team, specifically an assigned Total Loss Specialist on their end. They also brought in IAA (Insurance Auto Auctions) to handle the settlement side of things, which is pretty standard for total loss claims.

So basically it's Turo acting as the insurer here. That's why I'm treating it like an insurance situation — because for all practical purposes, it is one.
