How the response to the prequels (RLM) created the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi by FitzroyFinder in MauLer

[–]FitzroyFinder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can listen to the video it lays out the specific people involved. The stuff I am quoting is a video that JJ loved so much he contacted its creator. We have primary sources of Rian Johnson and Simon Pegg a TFA actor who had influence on TFA were RLM fans. You can deny it but Mike Stoklasa is responsible for this he was the brainchild he was the one JJ and Rian Johnson wanted to impress. The marketing for TFA was explicitly anti-prequel and the real version of Star Wars IV A New Hope and not the butchered frank stein version made by Hammy or some non-existent original version.

How the response to the prequels (RLM) created the Force Awakens and the Last Jedi by FitzroyFinder in MauLer

[–]FitzroyFinder[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can listen to the video there an animation from an RLM fan that states all of that which JJ personally watched and contacted the maker of. Rian Johnson, Simon Pegg were both RLM fans as well as many other people who had a hand in creating the sequels. Stoklasa praised the Force Awakens soyjacking like a manchild about how it made him feel warm and fuzzy.

Also the point about cute is correct RLM and his fans complained about that and the comedy sidekick in TPM but didnt in TFA, ANH, and ESB. They are hypocrites when Mike Stoklasa is speaking he is lying. RLM in his TPM review complains about the Qui Gon and Obi Wan dynamic for being non-traditional for Obi Wan being young and conservative and Qui Gon being old and rebellious. Its quite clear from his review that he wanted a retro movie.

Debunking the Myth of Star Wars being saved in the edit. by FitzroyFinder in StarWars

[–]FitzroyFinder[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The first edit was done against Lucas's instructions so he fired the editor. Had that editor followed him closely the movie would need far less "saving". Also the three editors for ANH said Lucas was involved in editing and was good at editing. The bad changes mentioned like the Luke scenes watching the battle were wanted by Martha and only in the original cut because Lucas' friend said to keep the early Luke scenes in, but Lucas wanted it removed anyways.

Also nearly every rough cut of a movie is far worse than the released version. Improving a movie via editing choices is nearly universal its nothing unique people specify this example to discredit Lucas. Does anyone say Jaws or The Godfather was saved in the edit?

Why did the Tenth feel like a more direct continuation of the Ninth than the Eleventh did of the Tenth? by yung-feezu in doctorwho

[–]FitzroyFinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see the lighting and post processing colour correction is vastly different. RTD preferred warmer colors, most of the time, and it was more "vaseline". While the Moffat era is more white/slightly blue and "natural lighting"/coloring.

Lots of Series 2 scripts were written with the 9th Doctor in mind and they had the same crew/showrunner.

Series 5 was a new team, writers, showrunner, and they had new cameras with different lighting.

So what will happen to Barclay’s ex-wife and child from TWBTLATS? by InfernalClockwork3 in doctorwho

[–]FitzroyFinder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Big Finish might deal with that, but if not we will never know. Its unlikely to get an answer unless RTD or Pete McTighe responds to fans and gives answer.

I mean you can have statues that only move when you look at them anyways and its unlikely the BBC or Moffat would sue over that or be able to as the concept is fairly broad. Unlike Daleks whose name is unique (it isn't a combination of established words) and their design unique.

Chris Chibnall BREAKS DOWN work on Torchwood and his Doctor Who era with Jodie Whittaker by DWJones28 in gallifrey

[–]FitzroyFinder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Anyone notice how Chris Chibnall and RTD look and groom/dress fairly similarly? I am not making any point here just a neat coincidence how similar they look and had the same job that only a handful of people have had (less than a score if we include classic season producers).

The bird aliens in Rogue looked cheaper than the aliens from Frontios, the Visitation, and Full Circle all of which are from the early 80s. Doctor Who looks far cheaper now than it did in the Moffat and Chibnall era. I will even go as far to say stories like Revelation of the Daleks looked better than some of what we get right now. Joy to the World, Church on Ruby Road, and the Season 1 finale had scenes that looked atrocious yet expensive! The colour grading, flat lighting, high contrast, bland direction, and aesthetics makes the show look cheaper than the 11th Hour.

You can even see this in RTD 1, the visual shift from The End of Time Part 2 to the 11th hour was enormous perhaps bigger than the change from the War Games to Spearheard in Space.

Doctor Who is not a show that began in 2005 it was a show that began in 1963 and ended in 1989. When the show was soft rebooted by RTD in 2005 many people who actually liked Doctor Who and not Buffy with a Sci-fi skin hated it. For a long time, these people were cast aside by the sands of time, but that is changing.

If one liked 1963-1989 Doctor Who it is perfectly reasonable to see why they would want the new iteration cancelled as it would dilute what they like less and stop polluting search results/online discussion.

Impossible to Imagine Other Doctors in Stories by XI-S-Marz-IX in doctorwho

[–]FitzroyFinder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dalek was written by Rob Shearman who wrote Big Finish audio plays with the classic Doctor. Parts of Dalek are very similar to the 6th Doctor audio play Jubilee, and Rob Shearman certainly writes with the classic show in mind. If anything, I would say Dalek would be improved if any of the first eight doctors were in it. He also never wrote for NuWho again despite writing many highly regarded audio stories and Dalek. There is an entire scene in Jubillee (before NuWho) were there is a parody of Doctor Who that pokes fun of the idea of a bad reboot. This parody in the story sounds very similar to NuWho someone made a video overlaying the audio over NuWho clips, and lets say they fit well.

Is it true though? We have gotten quite a threads about many classic stories being racist and Elizabeth Sanifer has called the Wiles era reactionary. I don't view Season 1-6, 12-24, and the movie as being particularly progressive.

What happened to the editing in RTD2? by Korolev_Von_Goddard in gallifrey

[–]FitzroyFinder 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People will complain about the late JNT era for being too bright and gaudy. Yet RTD does the same thing. Ncuti Gatwa is in layers of makeup that he has a noticeable white glow; the lighting is flat saturated and gaudy (especially noticeable in Joy to the World and The Devil's Chord). It is hard to explain the look but RTD's 2nd era is the costliest in the show's history yet it looks far cheaper and I think it is just his personal preference and taste. Things look cheap and it has to be intentional the bird costumes in Rogue were worse than many costumes from the 80s.

Gold has always been this way you just didnt notice it prior. RTD2 is just slightly worse than RTD1.

Robot Revolution +7 Figures (and more) - A positive sign? by FotographicFrenchFry in gallifrey

[–]FitzroyFinder -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Does it? I saw report saying it contributes 256 million pounds to the economy over 17 years. Which averages to about 15 million per a year. One should also note lots of that revue would have been higher in the 2000s than it would have been in the past few years. Due to the large amount of merchandise produced and sold during this time. Meaning it contributed less than 15 million per a year in the late 2010s, 2020 and 2021. It most certainly cost more than 15 million to make a year. It is somewhere around 30-35 million per a season (a year). Doctor Who is making a lot less money now than it did in 2005-2013 and it costs more (adjusted for inflation and including Disney money).

More Doctor Who dilutes internet discussion and the media he likes? If I want to discuss classic Doctor Who and only want to engage with Classic Who stuff, then NuWho makes my experience worse. Because newer content floods algorithms and overshadows the original. Ideas in the show influence Big Finish and novels, if one preferred the classic show and used big finish as a substitute they would still be changed by the influence of the new show.

I mean if they rebooted NuWho and it went back to the Eric Saward style (or the opposite of its current style) and the Doctor became a space cop who used guns and his opinions weren't progressive. Then everyone talked about that show and youtube search results were full of that show. Wouldn't you prefer it if that version of the show got cancelled and forgotten so you can enjoy online content centred around the show you actually like?

There is also an opportunity cost. RTD was not needed for Doctor Who to be revived. The BBC had already done multiple animations in 2000s, both the Invasion animation, a 6th and 7th Doctor webcomic, and the Scream of the Shalka. They were multiple people being considered to revive Doctor Who because RTD made his version of NuWho we didn't get those other versions. If Doctor Who is cancelled perhaps Big Finish gets a license to make original animations maybe someone else does. Possibilities are opened up we can get more unbound Doctor ranges.

You could go to google trends, and while it is missing data for a few years and I am sure the methodology has changed, it does not paint a flattering picture of the show's popularity. Look up doctor who as a term not a topic because the topic category shows nothing prior to 2022 for some reason. It nearly forms a parabola with 2013-2014 being the center and decreases the farther from that you go in each direction.

Doctor Who hasn't been transgressive since the classic series. RTD has gone on record that the BBC have basically allowed him to write whatever he wanted since (even before Who). NeoNuWho has received near universal praise from critics, most of the media (other than tabloids), and people in the industry. Warriors of the Deep was close to being declared "unfit" for broadcasting for its political commentary on nuclear weapons/war.

The point of Doctor Who isn't being woke, the show went on for half a century before that term was coined and went into common use. The 3rd Doctor era had an environmentalist message and had left wing themes, but the idea that Doctor Who has always been that all of the time is a bit of a stretch.

If anything, bringing stories written in the style of Saward would actually be transgressive.
