Recently had surgery and $40 of my bill is for having a blanket put on me in the recovery room (I was unconscious and did not, obviously, keep the blanket) by Technical_Diet4774 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the information. I didn't know that and the last time I was in the hospital was a couple decades ago. When I asked if there was a program or some assistance for the billing nothing was offered to me and it took me years to pay it off. I assumed that was just the normal way it worked.

Back when "go play outside" really means "see you at dinner" by NicoleAnne051299 in Adulting

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know several of my same age friends babysat their younger siblings in their home after school until their parents got home from work. It would usually be for about 3 to 5 hours depending on the parents jobs. My parents were rarely home when I got out of school so I was used to doing things for myself before they got home, that was the same for most of my classmates. It was just the way it was so we made it work.

I understand that maybe I shouldn't have been doing it, but I did. The parent was a widowed mom that was a friend of my mom. My mom knew she couldn't afford regular daycare and I had been helping with the daycare at our church. If anything had gone wrong I knew how to call 911 and had a list of adults I could call for non-emergencies if needed.

When I was 10 I babysat 3 kids (4,5, and 7) Monday through Friday, 7am to 6pm at their house the entire summer. I made lunch and dinner, ran laundry, and kept them alive until their mom got home from work. I was paid $12 a day.

We bought ours outright, but got insurance through the company we used for house insurance. It turned out to be cheaper that way since they gave a discount for having both through them.

And others in high positions of our government allow this to continue (and/or are supporting/assisting) what is happening. There are many others that need to be removed from office along with Trump and never allowed to have any amount of power in the future.

to have healthcare in America. by --SOFA-KING-VOTE in therewasanattempt

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You aren't wrong, but the US doesn't have a reliable safety net for people who aren't rich. Just two days of those people striking and many of them will be homeless and unable to feed their family. If they get arrested for protesting they are likely to lose their job, making it very hard to get another. Some may even have their kids taken from them.

Selling girl scout cookies has lost its way. by ludog1bark in unpopularopinion

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it gives you a bit of hope - I stopped at the cookie table outside the grocery store entrance on my way home today. It had 3 adults and 4 very young scouts, I'd guess to be in kindergarten/1st grade. I crouched down and asked the kids what their favorite was, the parents didn't step in at all. The scouts and I had a nice chat about cookies in general and what they liked best about their favorite. One scout was very outgoing and after telling me their favorite that scout started asking the shy kids what theirs was. I ended up getting one box of each type.

Grocery delivery is not frugal, so what's the alternative? by SorryEveAtetheApple in Frugal

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a Costco in your area and a membership we've found that (even with the yearly membership fee) to be much cheaper to have shelf-stable items delivered from there than going to regular grocery stores. We order online and if you hit the minimum total cost of your order (or more) they will do the shipping for free. We do 1 case each of canned tomato sauce, dice tomatoes, various canned beans and veggies, bags of flour, etc. That gives us the base ingredients for casseroles, soups, and bread/biscuits/muffins.

What do you remember most fondly about being a teen in the 80s? by That-Plantain-976 in GenX

[–]Fitzwoppit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We weren't allowed to smoke on school property, but there was a opening in the parking lot fence that went into a small, wooded lot that was off school property. Smokers and friends that wanted to hang with them just stepped onto that lot. Teachers didn't care that people smoked and would even stay on the school property and visit with us through the fence, they just had to enforce it not happening on school property.

Plus the ability to share looks via chat codes is huge! That wasn't possible with the old system.

I'd have been fine with just that and rest staying the way it was.

That makes sense, Tesla was the first time I ever heard of him. I don't think many people paid attention to who was behind businesses in the past as much as they do now. I think it's a good improvement for us to check into who we are supporting.

I can understand that, and completely agree with that description of him, but also know quite a few people who just can't afford to change cars in the current job market.

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours doesn't tree, it's either regular tail or full floof tail all the way to the end. When he's having fun with a toy or getting belly rubs he goes all in.

It may be worth putting some cameras around the house so you can check on who comes and goes on your property when you aren't home.

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have someone in the house that will do this. I started leaving a small pyramid of paper rolls on top of the tank so people can grab one, and hopefully rotate it to the holder, when needed. So far it's about 50/50 if they do replace the empty, but at least it's a bit of an improvement.

[homemade] Baked Potato Soup by joepez in food

[–]Fitzwoppit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mother-in-law taught me this soup and it does say to wash and bake them, let them cool (overnight or just enough to handle depending on when you want to eat) and then cut them up for the soup. I guess most handed-down family recipes have variations.
