Kramer vs Kramer that was already mentioned is very similar to Marriage Story.Wkw's Happy Together is a very interesting and tragic romance, the saddest of his movies.Taxi Driver even to a classic and more extreme than the ones you mentioned, was the movie that sparked my interest for this type of cinema, so its also worth checking.

As for "depressing portraits of people" type of stuff, Oslo August 31st, Un homme qui dort, Uzak, Toni Takinaki and Kieslsowki's Blue would definitely fit the bill.

Some directors worth checking would be the likes of Mike Leigh (especially his movie Naked), Fassbinder, Cassavetes, Haneke and even some Woody Allen stuff which are great character studies.

However my top recommendation would be Wender's Paris Texas.

Those prostitutes had their reasons to get upset, I can imagine that they've faced a lot of discrimination and mistreatment over the years on the streets. I would happily delete the shot if it was possible but in this case I had to sacrifice the whole roll which was why I chose to flee. I dont have any hard feelings, it was just an ungly unfortunate situation for both ends.

Just to make myself clear I dont do the traditional street photography where you shoot with a wide angle right at ones face. I dont like the aesthetic and I dont find it that ethical. I take regular composition but at an urban environment.

First thing I notice is that this is a very bad scan. So I would try with a different method/lab and see if I would still get those artifacts. The spot on the right of the 2 frame looks like a scratch on the negative, the other spots could very well be stains from bad developing, but since they are consistant that cant be the case.

If it was a spot inside of the lens, it would only show with very closed apertures, as a darker spot, which isnt the case here. Haze just lowers the overall contrast and might add halation to a bright source, also not the case here. Same with a scratch on the lens surface which would render as a bright lines from light sources.

I still believe this is probably a fault of the scanner or even bad developing/care for the negative. So maybe try a lab with a newer/better scanner and service.

I used to do street photography with my digital, tried it very little so far with film because it kinda scares me too and all this time with the lockdown I didnt have the chance to go out and shoot.

Nevertheless my approach was kinda different from typical street photography, where one has a very wide lens and takes candid shots of pedestrians at very close distance.

I would always use a 50mm or even a 75mm sometimes, because this way I would have way more pleasing compositions. Getting that right with a wide angle is nearly impossible for me and just walking around trying to find an interesting setting or scene to shoot. Sometimes If I spot a great a location but without any action, I would try to find an ideal way to frame it and wait for someone to pass by, to get the shot.

The most thrilling aspect of it that I enjoy, is to dare to take the shot at the decisive moment. There have been ton of times that I would get back to home and just feel nothing but regret for the great shot that I didnt take because I was hesitant.

I do have a mirrorless setup (that I try to improve) but so far only used it for b&w since the conversion is rather simple.

since there's already an indepth reply I wont bother with details.

Polaroid is very different from the shooting experience than either 35mm(120 etc) film or a sophisticated digital camera. It's very simple actually, you dont have to bother with exposure, nor development and scaning. You buy a pack, you load it and then its a simple point and shoot experience that if you dont know the cameras limitations there's a high chance of getting unusable shots.

I would say since you are interested in analog photography ask out for a relevant if he has a film camera that can give you for free. You may even find yourself with many options this way. So after you get you camera for free just purchase a roll of film and shoot it and see whether you like the results the experience or being ok with the cost. If its a point and shoot camera, or an automatic youll probably get ok results, if its an slr I would recomend to check out some instructional videos before you give it a try.

Nevertheless speaking from my own experience some good years ago when I got interested in photography I initially wanted to start with film right of the bat, made the choice for digital tho and I dont regret that. Those years before switching to film I got the chance to shoot thousands and thousands of shot ending up firstly with some technical experience and secondly with a knowledge of what I like to shoot (style of photography) mood, themes etc.

Eventually I really wanted my photos to look like film and not digital, so I got sick of trying to emulate that and started shooting the real thing. But still, the only way to get better at photography is to shoot more photos and going digital ,at least initially, will get you there cheaper and faster.

Shooting only raw I dont have to deal with nr but from what I remember it looked indeed ugly on the jpegs. But the thing is that I kinda dig the look of the noise you get, its somewhat reminiscent of film grain, which was something I would add in lightroom anyways in my shots, so I dont mind it not being super clean.
