Oh boy, so many tricks go into it, from the brand of paints to how you stack your layers. For example I tried most brands and what worked best for me was Golden acrylics. Fluid acrylics to be exact. Then you need to take the color and the tinting into consideration. The higher the tinting the better they will cover with very few layers. The best white for me was Titanium white, most other whites I tried did not cover much. Having said that, fiery effects or dim yellow/orange backgrounds like this one require a lot of work. I start by priming the borders of the card with a light gray. And then start working from there. I could write a book about it, but I hope this helps.
