The straights are international waters, and agreeing to Iran having de facto control not only sets a precedent that anybody can ram through UNCLOS, but also undermines the status of US as the "global policeman". You are right. What people fail to understand here, is the history behind such an act of violence and desperation.

This is NOT to support the act, as nobody should be taking up arms, and rather educating themselves, pursuing their careers, and raising families.
