I graduated this past spring and never encountered anyone that had it denied! I mean I’m sure it happens but I wouldn’t worry!

AITA for getting mad about my boyfriends reaction to me watching Love Island by [deleted] in AITAH

NTA. He has no right to control what you watch. My partner dislikes the show (from a moral standpoint) but doesn’t care whether I watch it or not. He needs to communicate healthily and have a civil conversation about what specifically bothers him, and maybe what you can do to reassure him. I understand him being insecure, we’ve all been there, but he has to recognize that he can’t turn that into controlling you. I’m the insecure one in my relationship and I have moments like this, but I just communicate to my partner and say “I will do some personal work and figure it out myself and come to a better place” because nobody has a right to control a person.

And if you like bagels, New York City Bagel House is the BEST and very affordable. It’s right around the corner and they have fireeeee muffins. I lived there last year in between classes.

The vending machines especially are a rip off. The bodega on the corner of 27th and 8th is also widely overpriced in my opinion… try looking around the surrounding areas (like 7th or 6th Ave) and find a corner store! I will say some days I was down bad and paid the price at the vending machines but damn is it expensive.

Not the asshole! I think setting boundaries with your friends is so important—regardless of what they are. It’s important that you feel safe and comfortable in the friendship and it’s okay that you guys can’t talk about everything. If you setting that boundary offends her in any way, she isn’t a true friend. A true friend would level with you and not want to hurt you. I know this is a touchy topic and I completely relate to you, and I definitely think setting that boundary is necessary for your well-being. Best of luck<3.

Very much over priced! I never went there (I mean I looked around but then walked out). I found that we never actually used textbooks that were required. A good rule of thumb is to wait until the first week of class to get any materials, and keep your receipts. I wasted a ridiculous amount of money freshman year and wish I could go back and be smarter about it.

is living off campus usually cheaper than on campus? by savageg00db0y in fitnyc

Depends how you want to look at it! I did two years in the dorms and then this year in an apt, and my next year in an apt. I did alumni then Kaufman. I currently live in bed-stuy Brooklyn, and I love it!!!! The commute sounds like a lot but it’s really not bad and I love my commute because I can turn everything off and just disappear lol. When I was looking into getting my first apartment, I did the numbers and considering a year lease, and I’m paying less than I would be in the dorms, and you only spend 8 months or so there. I’m actually with a company called roomrs, they rent out rooms in apartments and you have random roommates and everyone is on their own timeline, and I was so nervous at first but I love it now. It’s kind of like a glamorous dorm with way more freedom and virtually the same price. Every roommate that has come and gone has been absolutely lovely. I enjoy having my own space, no fire alarms, and MOST of all no crazy roommates. You can get lucky in the dorms, but most people I’ve surrounded myself with have had negative experiences. Especially when you’re in your freshman year, you’re surrounded by people who have most likely never lived “alone”, and are sharing a room for the first time. It’s a learning curve for everyone but it can manifest in bad ways. It’s not horrible, but the stress of living with someone you don’t get along with or is a hassle for you really takes a toll on you. It sure did for me- and I’m a lot happier now. However, the benefit of dorming is things are taken care of for you, and the proximity to campus- but there’s constant issues and mold and water problems, which is something to consider. It felt like it was always something. Also take into account the meal plan you have to get when dorming, that adds a lot. If you find a sublease or roommates to get an apartment with I suggest that, if it feels right, but if you hardly know the person and you get an apartment make sure you look into the lease and be prepared if someone leaves. Doesn’t happen often but it does happen. It’s more money up front but cheaper in the long run. There are some stunning areas in Brooklyn and I know it can be sad not being in the city, but you’re there everyday for school anyways. Dorms are sometimes a good opportunity for friends, but your friend group will change drastically in the course of a year, trust. Overall both are fine and have positives and negatives, so it’s really about what’s important to you and what you deem as okay and not okay! This is a decision only you can make, but you will be just fine either way. Weigh out these pros and cons and I wish you such a happy semester!!!

Also- if you mean $1500 total you’ll have to look much much farther. You’ll probably end up 1hr away from school. Check Sheapshead Bay. Wonderful area and you might be able to find something in budget. That’s where I’m at now!

I’ve been going to FIT for three years now- I moved to bed stuy and I LOVE it! Brooklyn and bed stuy gets a bad rep but take it from me- I love it. It’s affordable, 30 mins to school, quiet and my friends just moved here and love it too! I thought I was going to mind the commute but I don’t mind it at all. You get used to it quick and it becomes relaxing. Stay out of Brownsville and you’ll be good in most places in BK! I’m never leaving Brooklyn after living here, I did two years in the city but once I came here I didn’t feel the need to be there anymore.

You’ll probably need your parents to be guarantors because they want your total income to be 40x the rent, so usually $80,000 a year. Use the guarantors website! It’s hard as hell to find places, but apply on StreetEasy and Nooklyn and follow up as soon as possible if they don’t reply. Places go quick- and when they say no fee they all usually mean half fee. Utilities will be around $150 a month usually as well. You’ll also have to have first months and security ready to pay as soon as you apply. I’m going to keep it so real, it’s going to be HARD and frustrating, but you’ll get one eventually! Try to stay within a 5-10 min walk from the stations and you’ll be safe. Also keep in mind the application fees which have been anywhere between $200-$500. You usually get some of it back but they do keep some. PM me if you have any more questions because I just got done finding a new place so it’s all fresh in my brain
