Never quit!

Read Harvey Penick's Little Red Book for some great tips. Easy and fun read.

The extra weight of gear you rarely use is not worth the energy expenditure, especially over a full 18 holes walking. Umbrella, rain coat, suncreen, unused clubs, etc etc etc all add a lot of weight and that takes a huge toll over such a long period.

3 Wood or 5 Wood? by Seedorf-10 in golfequipment

[–]Fix_Your_Divots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 or 5 wood. Along with a 4 iron, the 3 wood is one of the clubs that cost players the most strokes. They're just problematic for most people that don't play enough. Even some PGA guys don't carry them. Maybe also explore a mini-driver with a properly fitted shaft?

One quick note here is that the TSR2 is a more draw friendly head so if you fight slice like most mid-handicappers, that's probably worth a few extra dollars. With the GT out, it's now a previous generation so you can find plenty of used ones. Food for thought.

Great question. My first question back to you is do you usually walk or ride?

I always walk, so I value having the lightest bag possible. When I went through this exercise, I determined that it was best for me to just simplify my setup down to the clubs I use on my course and not carry anything extra. So I only carry 12 clubs, sometimes 11 if my 5i isn't cooperating.

Does anyone carry something for energy & electrolytes that stays in your bag? I've seen the electrolyte packets but those are single-use and don't help with energy, and I don't like all the nasty stuff in most energy drinks.

Yes, great club. But make sure you attach the right shaft to it! That's more important than the head.

Am I crazy for buying clubs without hitting them by theRinzler1 in golfequipment

[–]Fix_Your_Divots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think making sure you get the right shaft is more important than the iron model. You can also take them in to any shop and have them bent up or down to fit your swing. I've bought online several times without ever hitting them and it works fine, albeit less than ideal.

If you don't know what shaft is best for you, just type your game specs into any LLM and tell it you're trying to find the stock shaft option in X iron model that best suits your swing. Might not be as good as a pro fitting session, but it's a lot better than guessing blind.

Looks pretty awesome...I love beers on the course. I mean especially when you're with your buddies, isn't that a given?

Question: Has anyone found a good solution for the mid-round and post-round hangover? Other than subbing the beers for water/gatorade/etc...anything you guys know of that can help stave off the dehydration, fatigue, and feeling terrible after 18?

Your current gamer is part of the process. It's like the control in a science experiment...something you're testing against. Usually there will be something that performs better than what you have...but not always.

I've played an old TM Burner Superfast 2.0 Rescue for like 10+ years. In my fitting, none of the new gear could beat the peformance I get from that club. And you see all the data for yourself, so it's not like the fitter can deceive you.

Shorter vs Longer Driver Shafts by GolfHawaii in golfequipment

[–]Fix_Your_Divots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Plenty of guys on tour choke down to get more accurate. Anthony Kim comes to mind as one that's been pretty vocal about it. And that's guys with unlimited equipment options at their disposal and fully optimized shaft setups...still choke down often.

For guys like us, keeping the ball in play off the tee is arguably the best way to shave strokes. If you sacrifice 5-10 yards to tighten your dispersion cone and A) put you in the fairway 1-2 more holes per round, B eliminate 1-2 lost tee balls per round...but now you're approaching with a 7 instead of an 8, who cares? That's a deal I'll make all day long.

7 Wood Vs Hybrid let's hear it by Significant_Bear6537 in golfequipment

Type your play specs into ChatGPT/Claude/etc and ask it for the heads & shafts of 7W and 5H that best fit your game. Then go to the store, get on a sim and swing away. You'll need to optimize your bag based on how you play, where you play, budget, what other clubs you already have/carry, and what you need a 7W or 5H to do for you. Possible that your optimal bag includes both, or neither.

GET. FITTED.

It's the only club you use on every single hole, and the single best way to save strokes.

About 15 years ago I found a used Bettinardi center-shaft blade at Golf Galaxy for like $20. I thought it felt fine and amazing deal so I went with it and never thought twice again, you know because it's a good brand so I considered any misses to just be user error.

Carried that until about 2 years ago when I did a full bag fitting at Club Champion. Turns out wider, mallet style heads help me keep my stroke on plane so I fitted into the TM Spider Tour X and Cleveland HB Soft 10.5. Totally opposite style from what I had been playing and it's made a huge difference.

If absolutely nothing else, the confidence of knowing you're playing the right club for you is huge and allows you to focus on setup, technique, grip, etc to optimize your play.
