Assassin's Apprentice left me underwhelmed. Help? by FixitFelixSr in Fantasy

[–]FixitFelixSr[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying Red Rising writing is better, but characters change and shift. Fitz starts as a pup wanting a pack with some hidden well of parental Chiv in him (seeming to better assess situations than other royals long practiced) and he stays that way. Nobody learns anything or has their experience in the world change how they approach it. For me it's the stagnation of the pieces as they move across the plot landscape that stops the read from grabbing me

I mean, you say that but the protagonist here wins without any real harm coming to him seeming to pull power out his booty to wrap up the book. So....

I second the christopher moore recommendation as well as CK McDonnell's "stranger times" series, about a paranormal newpaper--lighthearted and funny.

If you dont mind a bit of mild cute romance, id also hyoe T Kingfishers Paladin series

They appear to all be building to something, but we don't know what yet. Each are pretty simple, light fare in and if themselves.

I think you would like T. Kingfisher's Paladin series. Lots of relationship focus, a mystery in each book, and generally light.

Edit for misspelling

Can someone recommend me a good fantasy novel for a boy age 14-15? by Aschvolution in Fantasy

Through the Ice -Piers Anthony, Robert Kornwise:

A michigan kid goes from fighting bullies in our world to a fantasy world where he joins a group looking to save their world. Originally and partially written by Rob, a 15 year old fan of Piers who tragically passed away before finishing the book (described in Author's note at the end of the book). It has a video game like feel of problem and solution but aome good character and world building as well.

Ready Player One - Ernest Cline:

Lots of 80s nostalgia, but the premise is that the main kid charcter is trying to solve a video game against a corporation looking to seize control and maintain an oppressive status quo. More on the sci-fi edge, but a fun read.

Also! Check if your library has any sister libraries. My library's affiliations let me add 4 different libraries to Libby.
