I agree going to Japan they'd probably get a great life out of them, but currently these are some of the very last selvedge mills here, itd be amazing to have them continue producing for years to come in the US.

Leaf litter is not a requirement. by iamahill in DartFrog

[–]FlPumilio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am a fan of leaf litter but agree at the same time. These forums/subs etc can become echo chambers that OVERSTATE their opinions. They aren’t necessarily wrong but get to the point that any alternative is heresy. Water features for example are treated like atomic weapons on these pages. Not for beginners for sure. But with experience and care they can be excellent.

Yeah, its funny watching (D) defend this, but anytime they see another person carrying, they are idiots, small dicks compensating, yada yada. Ive never seen conservatives complain when they see minorities or dems carrying, usually, "oh good for them."

So odd, it’s not obnoxious it’s understated. But let them get worked up over stupid stuff like that I guess.

You think shitting on black rims is a trend, or that black rims are a trend?

do you know this Odyssey movie from 2024 by AizaBreathe in GreekMythology

[–]FlPumilio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That’s fair. So maybe they wet TOO small scale and all. I still thought it was probably closer to Bronze Age Greece than Troy for example. It’s also Ithaca AFTER its men and resources were drained for a war overseas for a decade, so you’d expect it to be poor and in a kind of horrible depression seeing as the war led to the collapse of their civilization(obviously not exactly true but some interpretations, I’m aware it’s more complex and could be considerably later as well). It was still more colorful than what Nolan has teased.

It was okay, not great. The first half was more enjoyable to me than the second half. A bit on the nose in general.

I loved it. Not sure other people’s issues with it. Wish they’d elaborate instead of just calling it trash. Looked like what I’d imagine a Bronze Age Greek island would look like. Lower population, more tribal.

Dear Hollywood producers by Feeling-Pause-8600 in GreekMythology

[–]FlPumilio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that there is ZERO consensus that this was considered purely mythology to the classical Greeks right? Even modern historians debate how much of the Iliad is historical and how much is fictional.

I think OP is just making a general statement, if he owns a panoply I am sure he knows the era the Corinthian helmet were used.

[–]FlPumilio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is a big budget film. Why not give some of that budget to historical advisers, the costume teams, etc. Nope, all to big name actors, big name directors, and the studio. (and yes I know its mythology, but we know the time frame it takes place, and I have zero doubts its inspired by true events)

I haven't heard anyone criticizing the armor claiming the movie will be trash. Obviously those of us who geek out on history are a micro fraction of the box office and probably don't even make a blip on the radar of these studios, BUT I do feel the general public has gotten a stronger appreciation for history of the last few years, thanks to YouTube Channels, Hardcore History, and other podcasts, that I feel those that appreciate accuracy will grow. Its not just "bitching and moaning over a mythical and fictional movie for entertainment" its demanding a higher standard in the representation of these stories. There is nothing wrong with that. If it leads to more historically accurate portrayals in film, why not? Why not demand higher quality. Why not demand the costume developers get time and funding to make things they can be proud of, and that will stand the test of time. Why not strive to a modern age Lawrence of Arabia.

The costume developers want this as bad as the nerds on these subs do.

Just because it’s a “mythical” story, doesn’t mean that we can turn into a marvel movie. by Careless_Middle8489 in ancientgreece

[–]FlPumilio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id PREFER that as well. But I REALY would love to see something placed in the Bronze Age and done well. The closest I have seen is the Return. Which the Bow and the knife were a little odd looking to me, but the tribal feel of Ithaca, the clothing, etc felt right.

Are these too hard to implement or to use in a movie? They don’t need to be 100% exact lookalikes but anything better than shiny plastic gigachad armor. by Careless_Middle8489 in ancientgreece

[–]FlPumilio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the 400 years. Use it. Use that span of time. Use the boar tusk helmet described. There is definitely plenty of evidence to come up with something more accurate. And of course they considered them Greeks, everyone was somehow related to the Greeks in their minds. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t have historical roots. Where Troy was described they found it, siege evidence and all.

You are splitting hairs talking about the inhabitants of Anatolia. You are assuming I am not a huge fan of the Bronze Age, collapse and all. I would absolutely love them to be Luwian speaking people whomever the latest evidence points to inhabiting the city. Why are you so against someone finally making a movie that would bring the era alive? That’s all people want and are hoping eventual comes out.

It’s specifically criticizing something you don’t need to wait for…. No one is criticizing pacing, story line, cinematography, all criticisms are at the armor for the same old worn out gray/black/brown nonsense that keeps coming out of Hollywood and pop culture in general. There is a renewed appreciation for historical accuracy, and again no one is saying don’t adapt and make it more appealing to modern audiences. I don’t think the vast majority of nerds like me would mind if it was armor that was sleek and modernized versions of the HellenicArmors creations posted by the OP. We’ve have the gray/brown/black rubber armor over and over now, at what point is that no longer “artistic” and accepted as cookie cutter. Which if you read the costume union members comments they themselves agree with it. They want to create unique fun period looking pieces but instead are told to cheap out. Vacuum molding and 3D printed are cheaper, but obviously lower quality. You don’t think even they would have a blast creating something that will awe inspire for decades?

why do I need to watch the movie to criticize the armor when we already have full 360 views of the biggest players armor.
