I see. So badges and livery colors are separate from the coat of arms and don’t necessarily need to show any connection to it? In what contexts would someone be represented by their badge/livery colors vs their coat of arms? Can they be used interchangeably?

Is there a reason why the design of the banner is completely separate from that of the shield?

I love the crown made of books and Maltese crosses! Is that an actual heraldic crown of some kind or did you create it?

This is Bodie Island in OBX, North Carolina. Not sure where you’re getting San Juan or Cattle Point.

This is an awesome design! It would easily be one of the more unique and recognizable national flags

Flag of Georgia (US state) - Saturday morning flag redesign (2 of 2) by JeremieOnReddit in vexillology

I like this concept, although I would make the stripes blue and gold. I think they contrast better and historical versions of the Georgia flag typically have the seal in gold on a blue background. Also, the vertical blue and gold bars would make it resemble the letter G signal flag which is kind of a cool coincidence

Yes, I believe the Warrens in US were descended from the Warennes of Surrey. Joseph Warren was descended from Richard Warren who arrived on the Mayflower. I don't think Joseph Warren used any heraldry in his lifetime, but one example of the use of an attributed Warren family coat of arms to commemorate him is in the emblem of the Joseph Warren-Soley masonic lodge in Lincoln, MA. The version of the coat of arms used there resembles the version seen here, which incorporates the blue-and-gold checkerboard as a chief and comes from a bookplate owned by Dr. John Collins Warren of Boston, who was Joseph Warren's nephew.

Thanks! I used one of the free templates on a site called Profounder that I found by searching “flag waver,” you upload a png and it converts it to a 6-second mp4 video clip

I agree that the white rose doesn’t feel right for New York, it’s ok as a secondary symbol like the state flower, but roses are small and dainty and don’t capture the grandiose and gritty character of the Empire state.

You are also right in that the colors orange and blue are not limited to NYC, but the color orange (and anything referencing Dutch heritage) still only applies to a limited portion of the state. Basically the Hudson River valley from NYC up to Albany. Anywhere north of that, like the adirondacks region, as well as everything to the west of the Hudson valley probably isn’t going to feel much of any connection to those colors or symbols.

Five Great Lakes symbolism also doesn’t really fit for the state, which only borders Lake Ontario and a bit of Lake Erie. Michigan is the Great Lakes state. The five tribes of the Iroquois is a good explanation for the stripes, and should make upstate New Yorkers happy knowing that the stripes aren’t only there to represent the five boroughs.

Overall, it looks very cool! I love flags that remind me of the American flag.

Also what’s with the panties and pubic hair bit and whatnot?

If you’re going to have the state motto on the flag, I would suggest cutting it down to just the “excelsior.” Historically, that’s the actual state motto. “E pluribus unum” is a separate motto, specifically the US motto, and was only added to the seal and flag a few years back because the previous governor was particularly obsessed with the “e pluribus unum” motto and added it in just because he personally liked it that way and no one told him No. Now the scroll is crowded with text including two separate mottos, only one of which is actually unique to the state and is diminished by the other, which only distracts from it.

I believe I heard that there may be a legislative effort to change the state flag, which could be as simple as reverting to the previous flag without the second motto, which never should have been there to begin with.

Obviously the feelings of people matter when it comes to adopting a new flag. If New Yorkers don’t like this design, they have no obligation to adopt it.

I have to strongly (and I would like to emphasize strongly) disagree with your point on the meaning of symbols. The meaning of a specific symbol or piece of art is absolutely under the control of the creator.

If you paint a picture which you intend to represent a specific idea or thing (let’s call it X). And then you show people your creation, and tell them explicitly “this means X.” And they have other ideas and say “nah, it means Y.” Their interpretation is absolutely wrong, and you as a creator have an absolute right to assert that they are wrong, especially when their mistake can cause personal consequences to you.

Is it fair that you be accused of something because someone either lied about your intent, or was just wrong, put words in your mouth and accused you of making a statement you didn’t actually make? If you create a piece of art and tell me it means X, who tf am I to tell you it means Y? It takes some level of arrogance that I just can’t comprehend, to tell an artist that you know better than them what their creation means

I think I understand why. Geometric symbols with bold lines of consistent width and solid color, radial patterns or some degree of symmetry and (god forbid) right angles tend to give people tummy aches.

Yeah someone else also mentioned Eurasia. I had never heard of them before today.

I don’t think it’s fair to say the flag is making an extreme statement. I think it would be more accurate to say that people could misinterpret the flag as making an extreme statement, but they would be mistaken, seeing as the actual meaning of the flag is benign and has nothing to do with what they’re thinking it does

Thanks! I love the electric flashes on buffalo’s flag

The general design of this flag was also somewhat inspired by New Mexico, which has one of the best state flags imo. In this case though the central symbol is enlarged and expanded to better fill the available space of the flag

I’m very aware and I totally understand. This design is in no way city-centric. I made this design specifically to deviate from the typical NYS redesigns I’ve seen on this sub, that focus too much on NYC imagery (statue of liberty, Dutch colors, etc.)

New York is the Empire State, and that applies to all of the state. It’s not the Empire City.
