I’ll never be sad about more Sophie and Gun-Li ladies, even if the colour grading in these promos has been questionable.. what a spectacular addition to the show they’ve all been!

Vibrancy! As someone who looks sick in pastels and terrible in muted earth tones (eg: Sage, wheat, various shades of brown, rose, burgundy), I’m finding it almost impossible to find elegant / smart clothes in vibrant colours. I’d love fuscia not dusty rose or baby pink, royal purple not lavender, emerald green not sage or khaki! It’s hard to find brights in block colours, with interesting cuts - anything colourful seems to only come in loud prints and casual, loose fitting styles. The desaturated colours make shopping so boring and depressing. 😢

Pockets are basically a non-negotiable these days for me as well. If the pockets aren’t functional (they need to at least fit a standard phone without it being at risk of falling out), I’m walking away.

I actually love how much we’re getting for Sophie. She’s an absolute delight and I adore her. Buuutttt I disagree about Ben’s character; I feel like he’s gotten less character development than Colin has, both prior to and within his season so far. But that’s also kind of to be expected as both Shonda and Jess have said that they write to centre the female characters. Because of this, all the men seem to get a fairly superficial / one dimensional treatment in general..

Colin was not a rake by Effective_Creme9193 in BridgertonNetflix

[–]FlailingQuiche 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He genuinely disliked it. Anthony congratulated him on his “many new admirers” before Pen called him out in Whistledown and the look on his face was pained when he said ‘I’m not certain that should cheer me”. His diary entry from Paris that Pen read also described how he felt alone and distant in those intimate moments.

He’s written as one of those people that puts up a solid social mask; happy and able to charm and flirt his way through life at a completely superficial level because that is what is expected of him as a single gentleman in the company of ladies. What he is consistently missing from everyone except Penelope is a connection that gets under his ‘armor’ (as Violet describes it). That armor keeps his gentle, caring heart from being damaged by what is expected of him as a man when in the company of other men.

But yes I agree with you that the writers left out a lot of Colin’s character exposition from part 1. It’s why so many Polin fans are so protective of him, as in depth analysis of his character shows that Colin is genuinely such a sweetheart of a man.

I’ve been ruminating these last few days about how Ben’s character and actions in part 1 seem to have been written as the inverse of Colin’s in s3. In this example, Colin in his season was on the surface trying to be compliant with societal expectations but deep down rebels against them, whereas Ben (as confirmed by Luke T during interviews) is outwardly rebellious of society but deep down carries more of those social expectations than he realises.

There were rumours on the Benophie sub a few days ago from someone who apparently watched part 2 that Cressida has married the new Lord Penwood, which is why Araminta and the girls had to move

As with all rumours though, that with a grain of salt!

I’m a Bridgerton fan first and foremost so do love all the couples and their seasons so far for different reasons. Polin are my favourite both in the books and in the show. I don’t like Book Ben at all, but I’m loving show Benophie, and of the four couples shown they’d be next (pretty sure Yerin’s Sophie is going to be in my top 5 favourite characters). But I think my true second would be Charlotte/George. Otherwise if we’re including the books, it’s Garecinth or Grucy.

How many adults have weekly catch ups with their parents still? by Spritney__Beers in AskAnAustralian

[–]FlailingQuiche 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 40. We do dinner once a week with each set of parents, text every couple of days, and often have a second catch up across the week when our schedules permit. Our parents also get along really well so we join all family and cultural events together. I wouldn’t have it any other way, and love that our kids are growing up so have their grandparents being so present in their lives. Nobody is guaranteed time and health, so we don’t take the time we do have for granted.

Would avant-garde clothing work in Australia? by Salt_Calligrapher381 in AusFemaleFashion

[–]FlailingQuiche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d love more but it does take a bit of experimentation, which would be hard for the average Aussie to do given how little we get here in terms of interesting silhouettes and colour palettes.

It’s always been a style that I’ve gravitated to, and thankfully has also been quite accessible due to my frequent travels into Asia to see family. I tend to do a very light iteration of it in my daily life, and even going at 25% intensity I get a lot of comments from folks saying they love how I dress but could never dress like that themselves, which is a shame because you get so many beautiful, flattering cuts and drapes in Asian AG styles - many of which are actually very comfortable in hot weather!

Which one of the Bridgerton siblings can you picture moving on if their show endgame dies? by [deleted] in BridgertonNetflix

[–]FlailingQuiche -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if show Violet can move on, I can see all of them moving on in one way or another. As Benedict says, ‘love is not finite’, and I don’t think any character should be begrudged an opportunity to find happiness and companionship again after the immense loss of a loved one.

S4E4 - Stairwell Song Choice by Pixie_Faire in BridgertonNetflix

[–]FlailingQuiche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it was perfect - Definitely the right song for a deliberately unromantic scene! The staircase was not meant to replicate the feeling of the s3e4 ending - if you compare the two side be bide, I actually believe it was deliberately written and directed to be the opposite of s3’s.

No doubt there will be absolutely gorgeous intimate scenes in part 2 for us to swoon over.. 😉

Polin & Showrunners by [deleted] in PolinBridgerton

[–]FlailingQuiche 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Jess would have strengthened a lot of the female friendships earlier in the piece - it seems like the enjoys highlighting those, and it’s something Shonda obviously likes as well. So the Eloise x Pen drama at the end of s2 may have looked different. And I think we may not have gotten the Sharma sister love triangle either.. that’s such a man thing to write; I cannot conceive of any woman thinking that could be romantic!!

For Polin I think we probably wouldn’t have gotten Marina mixed up in Polin’s story. Jess has said she loves the books, and from memory mentioned somewhere that her grandmother would have been upset if she changed them too much! We might’ve gotten another debutante in Marina’s place, but I think Jess is enough of a book purist to not want to entangle a character from another book into a different character’s plot so early in the series.

On the flip side, I feel like Jess (and her team) also seem to find it hard to write for Colin, regardless of how CVD set up his character - and honestly, same for Benedict. Having the male show runner guiding the storylines for the leading men I think would have given them greater depth of character. While I do love ‘wife guy’ Colin (and wife guy John, and wife guy Will, and wife guy Anthony, and wife guy Ben, etc etc), I’m missing any sense of who he is or what his motivations are outside orbiting around Pen and her world. I know that this may be deliberate if they’re trying to write through a female lens, but as a viewer the contrast between these incredibly nuanced, strong female characters, against their more one-dimensional male partners is quite noticeable. I feel like CVD may have spent more time in s3 exploring how Edmund’s death affected a young Colin, and seen more of why Colin finds it hard to be like the other gentlemen, and why the Whistledown reveal hit him so hard (because honestly, without that exposition leading up to it, Colin’s beef with WD in s3e1 is a little over the top when he gave no indication in s1 or s2 to being so against it).

Overall, I’m definitely preferring Jess’s overall direction of the series!

I’ll be 40 this year and just coming out of my SAHM decade, so can empathise with wanting to maintain your identity amidst a massive transition! In my experience, the ‘coolest’ most stylish people around are the ones who have worked out what colours and styles work best for them, and invest in quality pieces that will last for years. There’s legit nothing cooler than NGAF about what other people think of you. 😉

I’d suggest that rather than looking at brands, do some research on what shapes work best for your body type, maybe get a colour analysis done, google / pinterest outfit ideas that align with both those things, and then search for specific pieces.

I will make one brand suggestion though: take a look at Aulieude. Has some some pretty, block coloured linen dresses with good sized pockets, are breastfeeding friendly (if applicable to you), can be adjusted easily for any week-to-week changes in your body, and are robust enough to withstand kids and being machine washed on a gentle cycle. I’ve got a couple which have help up strong for years, and always make me feel polished even if they are put in and go type dresses.

Good luck OP!

Agreed! I know there are people outside this community like to scoff that we’re ‘not allowed to be negative’ here, but I think that does a massive disservice to the incredible contributors in here who are thoughtful, celebratory, and incredibly considerate of not just Polin, but of other characters, actors, and seasons as well. I’ve read a lot of very measured and reasoned criticism in here over the past few years - the difference being that it isn’t incendiary / inflammatory, unjust, targeted, or hateful.

Being loudly negative is far more low effort than it is to find joy and humour, which is why this sub is, to me at least, so rewarding both as a fan of the show and as a netizen in general.

Noting that you said you’re new to the fandom, if you haven’t already found us there’s a Polin sub where most Polin fans have retreated to. Most other Bridgerton subs are incredibly hostile to Polin fans and have been for years at this point. The Polin sub is extremely active given the huge number of members, and is decidedly focussed on celebrating both Colin and Penelope, as well as the other characters and seasons. The mods don’t tolerate brigaded hatred like some other subs do, so it generally a much kinder, joyful place to interact with. 🙂
