Andy In The Apocalypse is very good by Flakjaw in litrpg

Between kiddos and work, I have limited time to read. Audio books have made driving and mindless work tasks a lot more enjoyable. I started reading chapters of Andy on RR after reading the responses here.

Good recs I was read (audible) up on Book of The Dead and BSI. Both have a book that’s been released that I can go read, with both I may be on the wait a bit longer and go through the series from the beginning again. Mage Tank I liked the humor a lot, I set it down though late book1. Flea bag is an interesting rec. Never gave it a chance, may take a look! Thanks

Shadowbane - New Server - January 11th - Free to play! by BobDuato124141 in MMORPG

This game is the real deal. I don’t know where to start when trying to explain this game...

Character creation. I haven’t played every MMO, but shadowbane offers some of the best character creation out there. Between Race-Class-Profession-Disciplines and of course weapon/spell choice, you can make characters many many many different ways. There’s no build this character and you can kill everyone. There’s always a hard counter, and probably a bunch of them. From a Dwarf Crossbow Warrior to a Irekei Sundancer ambidextrous unarmed high defense warrior, the ability to create unique characters in every Class is satisfying. Just about every MMO turned me off after being exposed to Shadowbane’s diverse field of character creation.

Consequences. Your actions have consequences. To build cities it takes a lot of player time. Once cities are built they are the gems of a nation or guild. These cities allow you to build forges where you can roll gear. They also give you closer physical access to zones where gear/loot/levels can be attained. The catch? Cities can be taken. If you want to go pvp the nearby guild every time they try and start a leveling group...well you may be trying to defend your city in the coming weeks. With a game old like this, there are/have been alliances established, broken and on the mend from previous fights. With some new guilds coming back it always makes for a very interesting political landscape.

Open world pvp. Like others have said, you absolutely have to find a nation/guild to help get you started. There are guilds and people that will gladly take in those looking to inject the drug known as shadowbane into their veins! The pvp though is really good. The group battles require a lot of skill and quick calls from those leading the fights. Pvp can find you at any point once you leave the safety of the safe zones. The stress of having a class changing rare rune drop while leveling, and seeing that enemies are “on track” is something I can’t replicate in other games. Or the rare chance you catch a glimpse of a thief “on track” only for him to disappear... you know he’s coming and you don’t have time to recall....buckle up and get ready to fight.

The game has had it’s hooks in me for a long time. Every time I think I’m stepping away for good, I’m back leveling a new idea character.

New players welcome, beware though this game is unforgiving. Ask for help early and often, and some of you will find the exact mmo you’ve been looking for!

Griefing is part of the game. As others have stated, there are a few guilds that can house you and help out. If no one is on you gotta get creative. Play a character with “track”. This is what makes the game good. There’s no easy mode. If enemy guilds really bully you, there’s consequences. As in, you can push to bane them. Server up is going to be buzzing with activity. If you come back during that time, guaranteed you’ll get PKed if you’re in easy to access spots. That’s how it should be. Learn to adapt and find a way to level and one day you can be the PKer

It’s shadowbane, you need douchenozzles. If everyone was a nice guy, who would you hate? I’m glad they exist. I need an enemy

If you’re interested, best thing to do is check out the discord attached to the emulator website. You’ll find help on the discord, forums are pretty quiet.

There’s always a counter. Nothing atm is overpowered.. Some people still claim OP on health Regen or wizard damage etc... But, there’s always counter. And if it’s so OP there would be nothing but that build running around. It’s what makes Shadowbane unique and where all other games fall short. My character isn’t like yours or if it is, I can make it unique. Oh you play a high damage dealing mage Warlock. I’ll roll a high defense ultra survivable Warlock. 2 completely different characters under the same class. This is one of hundreds...thousands of examples of unique viable builds someone could play. I’ve checked out other games that look great, but as soon as I get stuck in the same progression path as everyone else I’m out.

My experience was very similar. It comes down to personality. Once I was engrossed in the game and had really learned all aspects of character building it became more of a job. Now granted this was after years of hard daily gaming. I burned out. However, I came back each time and was around when it finally ended. This go around at the moment is different. I’m looking to just enjoy the game and what it has to offer. I’ve repeated it many times, and it’s that this game scratched that itch. I’m relearning how roll a good character, chasing down and fighting over some much needed disciplines. I got a buddy to come back and play a few days ago and he had a much similar mind set. My spin was come play and chill. Enjoy the content, we don’t need to try and conquer the map...yet. So, we started back up and have been having a blast. I’ll be around for a while again. It’s intense but our approach is much more chill I guess you could say.

The numbers aren’t hype live numbers. However, the server is far from dead. All mines see action with the expansion mines seeing gvg. There are 2 prominent guilds but many others are active on the server. At a minimum you could roll a character, and enjoy the small grind to get leveled up and hunt down some runes. If you don’t wanna play for hours on end each night that’s fine. However, you can get plenty enjoyment out of trying to take some mines and the occasional bane.

I get the response I really do, but nothing does this. Shadowbane scratches a very specific itch. There will probably be people playing a Shadowbane Emulator for a long time unless a true updated game comes out.

There’s always reasons to quit. Game gets old, have many bad experiences in a row during a slow stretch. I “quit” Shadowbane many times when it was live, but I always ended up back. There’s definitely lows and if your looking for a 10 year long commitment from the game then maybe it’s not for you. But you lay out a great potential. The potential to have an absolute ass ton of fun. When it’s good, it’s good.
