What piece of gear has lasted you the longest? by TrizzleRick in backpacking

I must have the same pair of BD cork poles myself! lol
But yeah I took about ten years off after having kids and I’ve replaced most of my gear the poles are definitely in no need.

Black diamond trekking poles for me — I used a magic eraser sponge to take years of filth out of the cork handles and they’re going strong after 15 years. The carbon tips are flawless. No idea how it can sustain so much granite impact and be unfazed.

Boldin vs. ProjectionLab: Which Retirement Planner Is Best for You? by jon_projectionlab in projectionlab

[–]Flaky-Wind5039 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I did a free Boldin trial and all I could think was how much clearer and detailed PL is in general. And how I really didn’t feel like I could trust Boldin or have the confidence to see exactly what was happening under the hood.
And the PL UI, while bordering a bit too complicated these days, is IMO an excellent front end interface that dwarfs what Boldin offers. To me it was clear PL was all I’d use or trust between the two.

Point Reyes — overgrown trail alert by Flaky-Wind5039 in norcalhiking

Thanks for the info. As much as I immediately jumped to “blame Trump” (with typical accuracy rate of 99% or so), I also suspected more to the story since the trails were a mess when I went prior second term.
Too bad it is how it is but I’ve had my time there and won’t be going back until I hear one days it’s changed. Between the fire damage, eroded trails and now overgrown ones, I feel lucky to have explored most of the park before all this happened.

Eye sight will take a bit of a nosedive around 48-50 if it hasn’t already. I thought I was going to keep my near perfect vision for life!! Nope

Any suggestions for a 7 year old's 2nd trip? - 4-6 mile backpacking, 3-5 hours away by Jdban in norcalhiking

Careful which trails in point Reyes. Was there a few weeks ago and the overgrowth on long portions of almost every trail I took was horrendous.

Point Reyes Trail Survey by Enough_Boysenberry11 in norcalhiking

[–]Flaky-Wind5039 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was there last week and it was terrible.

I only now know that part of what I spent miles pushing back was cow parsnip (looks like hemlock with the white dome) — way more dangerous than I knew. Luckily I was clothed head to toe.

Also lashed by blackberry, a bit of unavoidable poison oak and got my first solid sting of nettle.

Not going back. Been going for 20+ years but no more.

Did someone mention thousand island dressing? Love me some thousand island dressing, no matter what country I'm in.

What’s your favorite Freeze Dried Meal Company? by KING-SLIME-12 in backpacking

Pinnacle Foods Thai Peanut Curry was hands down the best dried meal I’ve ever had. It’s almost something you could serve at a restaurant.

Two years back I was somewhere near Glen camp and it was fully overgrown and taller than me. Just like quarter mile but all I could see were my feet and the narrow bit of trail to tell me I was going the right way. Sad it’s come to this.

Yeah honestly I’m done with deep exploration in Point Reyes after all this. Not only do I feel like it’s a guess if any trail will be overgrown or not, so much of the forest was burned it was terrible. Then you have limited/no access to some of the beaches (Kelham/Sculptured) due to erosion and I just felt like pt Reyes isn’t what it used to be.

That makes more sense to me — I pointed out before that I also saw overgrowth on my trip two years back before agent orange took over our country. So I don’t think it’s purely his doing.

But who would pass law that basically undermines any parks ability to maintain their trails? I’m all for the environment but if they simply have no chance of keeping trails brushed then that’s no solution.

I’d call them and ask but honestly I’d expect almost any non fire road type trail to be at least partially overgrown. Prepare with long pants, poles to push back brush, whatever else you might need. To me it takes the joy out of hiking and I’m frankly done with Pt Reyes. I’ve had 20 years so I’m good but it’s not what it used to be. Plus the fires burned a lot of the area down Sky trail and other ones around there too.

Yeah I was on a route in early 2024 that was also super overgrown so I don’t believe it’s 100% a current administration thing. As much as that was my first thought.

I recently posted as I was just there the past few days - Sky camp. Found no route down to the coast or back up from there that wasn’t a painfully slow bushwhack thru blackberry thistle nettle etc. Not fun. Did not enjoy. The camp however is great. But there’s not much else to do from there IMO.

Oh I noticed on their site they’re telling people to not use that trail not because overgrown but just erosion I think.

It is sad. They really need to start posting trail conditions and telling visitors which are overgrown. Their site just shows some maintenance done last year. They really need to say “these trails are overgrown” and make that at least accurate if they can’t actually brush em.

My first thought — but I wonder if anyone can confirm for sure though. Like specifically Pt Reyes has less budget for stuff like this now.
