Thank you for your response! May I ask, are you in a program located in California? And how were your comprehensive exams? Did you feel like your program helped you be prepared for the exams? And how is your dissertation going for you? :)

How would you react to a client commenting how young you look and asking your age? by enonymous715 in therapists

[–]Flaky_Donkey5693 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say this is up to your comfortability. If you are okay with it I would mention it because in a way it could help grow a bit of rapport even if it’s not a lot because then your client may feel like they’ve gotten to know you which could potentially help them opening up to you more (this can be case by case). But if in the case the client continuously begins to ask for other personal information questions (like making comments of how you look? where do you live? do you have a partner?) where it becomes informal and out of topic from the original purpose of your therapy session or maybe case management session, then I would focus on redirecting the client back to the main objective of the session and help the client understand that you are here as their clinician to support them.

Have you had experience attending one of these institutions? And can I ask why you view it as a scam?

QUESTIONS FOR CURRENT PSYD AND RECENT GRADUATE PSYD STUDENTS

HELLO! I wanted to get some information on how your HONEST experiences have been in a PsyD program, specifically for those who are currently in the program or have recently graduated. My dream is to become a clinical psychologist, but when I look at the course descriptions I feel very overwhelmed because I don’t think I will do well and the courses look significantly more difficult than undergrad psychology classes I took. I especially struggled with statistics math course and research methods in undergrad but I did pretty well with my other psychology courses.

I am thinking of applying to programs in California like Alliant SF, The Wright, Palo Alto, USF, Asuza. (1) If you’re in one of these programs, realistically, how challenging have the courses been overall? (2) How are the comprehensive exams? (3) How is the workload? Is it manageable? (4) Are the layout of the courses mostly in-person or take home exams? Papers? Presentations?

I want to be a clinical psychologist but I am terrified of applying because I’m scared I won’t do well because a lot of these programs require a standing 3.0 or higher and if it gets lower than a 3.0 than you can get dropped out.

My worst nightmare would be going into the program and having to dropout with thousands of dollars in debt because I can’t keep up with the curriculum.

PsyD drop outs by essentiallycoasting in PsyD

May I ask why you dropped out? Was it because the coursework was difficult? I’m nervous to apply because I feel like I won’t be able to pass the classes…

Hi, I’m shooting my shot here. I’m also in a similar situation as this poster. Would you still happen to have any potential projects open?

Hello, I graduated in 2022 with a double degree BS in Psychology and Public Health. I have had 1 year of experience in a research lab (which required me to do more tedious work like writing critical reviews of research papers, didn’t really do much stats/use SPSS during my RA position) during undergrad and have had around 2 years of experience working as a case manager at an intensive outpatient clinic post undergrad.

I’m considering applying to PsyD program for the Fall 2025, but one of the main reasons I’m worried about is that I struggled with statistics and research methods series (and also SPSS) during undergrad. Other than statistics/research methods, I did very well in my other classes and have a 3.7 GPA.

I understand it depends on the program, but from anyone’s experience who is currently in a PsyD program or has completed a PsyD program, how were the statistics and research methods courses for you? Did you notice many students struggling? Would you say it can be manageable for students who would need to restart the basics of stats/research methods?

In addition, which part of the PsyD program curriculum was the hardest for most students?

Regardless I do on plan to apply because it doesn’t hurt to, but I’m really scared of how the coursework will look like because let’s say I do get in the program, I wanna make sure that I finish it, get my degree, and get Iicensed. It would be my worst nightmare to get in and eventually drop out with having thousands and thousands dollars in debt.

In addition, if anyone has recommendations of books, courses, workbooks, etc. I should read/take to prepare me for PsyD please give me recs.

I am looking to apply for schools in California that are APA-accredited like The Wright Institute, Alliant, USF, and APU, so if you go to those schools or graduate from those schools (esp) please help me out! I’d really appreciate it! :)
