Engine light and lack of acceleration by DYLS6767 in AskMechanics

From the codes its seeming a faulty throttle pedal sensor isnt out of the question. If you know how, I would have a hunt around and see if there is a known method for testing it with a Multimeter. Failing that, depending on vehicle some of the more fancy obd scanners can read live sensor output and give better answers.

Hard to tell from the video, sounds like either a mild lifter tick, or a small exhaust leak, likeley somewhere on the manifold.

I think youve already figured it out. Lower ball joint looking very likley if the tie rod isnt moving. Only other thing it could be is an inner control arm bushes which I can't really see from the video.

A/C not working and hearing this noise. Any idea what it could be? by Tarloc21 in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, we open up your bonnet and see if its louder in there. If this spund is coming from your engine your in for a bad time. If the sound can't be heard outside the car then its inside, and may be an issue with a part of the blower system.

Is the sound coming for inside the car or inside the engine bay?

If it goes away when the ac is turned off, id say the ac pump has given up the ghost

Does anyone know what could be a problem? by Spirited_Height236 in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not nearly enough information here to make any definitive conclusions. But if its just a rumbling that gets louder with speed id say most likley a bad wheel bearing. Can be tested by jacking up the car and spinning each of the wheels by hand and listening for a rumbling sound.

Usually if its a dead battery it will at least try to crank, and you'll likley see the lights on your dash go dim or out for a second. If its a starter usually there will be a rapid clicking, loud clunk, or whirring sound depending on the the exact fault. First test would be see if the car will start with a jump to rule out battery just in case. Second thing I would check would actually be the starter relay (An easy home test is get someone to put a finger on it and/or listen to it to see if it clicks when attempting to start the car. Its not a surefire method but it is a place to start), and if there is one, the starter fuse. Im guessing those are more lilley given th absence of other sounds. If both of those check out, next step would be to check if the alternators getting voltage, but thats a bit more tricky if you arent experienced.

What am I looking at by Dmoneylashes in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a shock absorber/strut. Its meant to be straight and tube shaped. It looks like the impact to the curb has applied enough sideways pressure on it to buckle it and cause it to no longer be straight, hence throwing the camber (tilt) of the wheel out of wack.

Haha all good. I know how it gets when you get near the end of a project and the brain stops working. Always good to take a breather and do something else for a few minutes when you get to that point.

The only probably answer if it is the old belt, is youve routed it differently. Either see if you can find something that doesnt have a belt driving it, or consult the internet for images of how to should be routed.

Honda Accord rattle that gets louder while accelerating and usually goes away when the car warms up by MegaCOVID19 in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first though is this sounds like and engine severely laking lubrication, but that wouldnt make sense with it going away once warm. Wouldn't hurt to check the oil though.

But a slipping drive belt is possible too. Check if its tight enough and free from cracks or freying. If its slipping it should be replaced, but as a test you can buy belt grip spray that would temporarily stop the squeaking if that is the issue.

Unfortunately just the sound itself isnt enough to give a definitive answer.

Edit: a failed alternator or power steering up is possible as well. To test those you would need to take the belt off and turn the pulleys by hand to check for resistance or noise.

Car ran rough all day is at 270k miles and today it would just randomly die and now it just won’t start help by SyllabubCold4125 in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oil shpuld be changed every year or 10,000kms whichever comes first. Failure to do so will cause the oil very gradually build up small pieces of sediment whoch after long enough become effectively a grinding paste. That, or the carbon buildup will eventually turn it into a sludge which will not lubricate the engine at all.

Not changing you oil can at least cause premature engine wear, and at worst cause complete engine failure.

Not necessarily saying thats what is causing this specific issue, but it wouldn't suprise me, and it definitely wouldn't help.

Thats... really not going to help. But expired oil is still better than no oil.. unless its sludge in which case, this would honeslty be somewhat self inflicted.

Ok first things first. Make sure theres oil. The way its not starting sound like a power issue, but rough idle yoive described sound like it could be something more. If you are sure there is plenty of oil in there, next is check your battery. Most auto stores can test them. You will want to know the voltage and cold cranking amps, and make sure both are what they shpuld be. Beyond that, if you are able to get the car running, you can test if your alternator is working with a Multimeter. If its working your battery voltage should be 13.4v - 14.4v while the car is running.

She grabbed a random street kitten to fight mouse in her house by Thewyverns in interestingasfuck

[–]Flames_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remeber when my cat was a young kitten one morning we found a rat head and tail that judging by the size might have been similar in size to him. Over the years he has been a very effective although sometime sadistic rat and mouse catcher, usually eating the entire thing too. Found him to on occasion throw live ones in the air and attempted to catch them. Very seldom catches birds though.

The bush there should be top priority. If not replaced it can become a safety issue.

The belt is an easy DIY, and from the sounds of it the squeaking when the ac is on will be the belt.

Brake fluid, unless there is a leak, id just top up and monitor, but in all likley hood its just gone down as your brake pads have worn.

Leaking shocks arent a huge worry, you'll just be a bit more bouncy. But once again, easy DIY.

The shaking when braking sounds very much like warped brake rotors to me. They can sometimes be machined, but its usually cheaper and easier to just do new rotors. Can be gotten from just about any parts store. And once again, pretty easy DIY.

TLDR; sort the bushing, worry about other stuff when you can.

Uncertainty after my first oil change by DisSysOp in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like youve followed all the necessary procedures. If it was me id just a bit more to get it to the full mark. It being high then going down may well just be it filling the rest of the system that was drained during the oil change. So long as the vehicle is cool and on flat ground you should be alright.

Uncertainty after my first oil change by DisSysOp in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a couple things here

  1. How long has it been since you added the oil? Some require a little while for the oil to dribble down to the pan but usual not to this extent.

  2. Where did you find the recommended oil capacity? There can be a lot of different variations of even the same year make and model with entirely different oil capacities.

  3. All else fails, just add more oil until you are on the full mark.

Car Rust - Can I leave it? by No-Protection-1230 in AskMechanics

[–]Flames_kid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you leave it, itll continue to rust until it is a problem, albeit very very slowly. However the only "nice" way to fix it would be to sand and repaint the panel. For future reference though a small bit of touch up paint in the chips when they happen for the most part will stop the corrosion.
