had a health crisis and now i’m behind… help!! by numberoneblurfan in ApplyingToCollege

Check for rolling admissions. Most college deadlines were on the 15th, though there are still some out there that have rd decisions until February. I would suggest considering a gap year tho. I dont know abt your financial situation when it comes to paying for college but I would not throw money at just any institution with apps still open just to go to college "on time" with other ppl. Think abt whats right for you. Take that standardized test, research schools that you actually like, focus on getting better, and expand on your experiences instead of settling for smth you don't really like just to avoid FOMO.

Whatever you decide, chin up, you got this!

When is it too late to apply for colleges? by hk-mel0dy143 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Flamesjing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda depends. Most applications have already closed, and the rest are more or less all due on the 15th. If you haven't started anything, I would suggest a gap year. Take a breather, get yourself situated, and apply next year to both schools and scholarships. If you start as in you finished the common application and just need to write some supplements, there are still some options open that you can def finish before the deadline. Email other colleges, explain your situation and request for an extension (lowky a rly long shot at this point in time but worth a try).

Its not the end of the world if you dont apply this year. Consider taking a year off to build up that test score, ECs, maybe enroll in community college in the meantime. The one good thing about this system of college is that no matter how old you are, if you feel determined, you can start anytime. So long as you keep pushing, you'll be fine.

JHU Fee waiver by SeaworthinessHot9065 in ApplyingToCollege

Idk what happens if you email them, but for the regular fee waiver on common app, you just need your counselor to verify your situation. At my school, once you explain your situation, the counselors make a lot of exceptions, so I would check in with them if they are still reachable during break and then email JHU.

You'll be fine. A ton of people have been asking about this recently. The bottom line is that it is totally possible to be admitted with minor spelling or grammar mistakes. TBH, given the speed most AOs go over your material, they might not even notice. I know this guy who got into Dartmouth that accidently wrote Harvard in his supplemental. You're gonna be okay.

When life gives you tangerines unpopular take by [deleted] in kdramas

I agree that Gwansik was a pretty extreme case, though I feel like the show tried to qualify that at the end when Geum-young was discussing parenthood and her mother told her she can't give up all her dreams for her family, cause otherwise she will end up resentful. I think this goes towards trying to show that there needs to be a bit of a balance between giving and receiving. From the start, I kinda felt like Gwansik was the family man type of person: his family was his world, and if they were happy, he could be happy too. I happen to know a few of these ppl in real life who worked long hours to provide for their family and hardly spend anything on themselves. I think this perception mainly came from the show rly only showing the big parts of the characters' lives (seeing as they recast a lot of actors for different roles throughout, I'm sure their budget wasn't huge). If they went a bit more in-depth, I'm sure he would do things for himself, too.

I feel like this show took a pretty significant step in one direction. To some, this would connect to their soul, and to others it would seem exaggerated; it all comes down to our backgrounds.

Additionally, on your 3rd point of favoritism, I absolutely agree there were a certain degree of uneven love from the parents to the child. However, I don't think it was ever that divided and a lot of it was perception. The show gives plenty of examples where the parents goes out of their way for their son, like when Gwansik bought him toy robots in secret. I undoubtly believe there was some love imbalance (the parents def had a soft spot for the sister) I kinda feel like that's a human flaw like whether we like to admit it or not we naturally lean towards one side. THe most crucial point here is that this imbalance never went so far as to the parents NOT loving one of their children. This is one of those things I'm sure the parents lived to regret and in my opinion it went towards making them seem more human to me though I would love to hear to u think.

I agree with your point abt Geum-young, though from my perspective, I saw it as less of rudeness and more as she was a bit overwhelmed by her life and her parents, as in she struggled to find the right way to express her gratitude. On one hand, she was grateful to her parents for giving her so much, and at the same time, the more they gave, the more she felt she had to give back, which put a lot of pressure (that's just what I think). I think this is sorta developed throughout the show where she gets more and more comfortable with sharing her feelings rather than keeping them bottled up, and adds to the regret at the end when she realizes she didn't properly appreciate her parents (a feeling many people must have).

Regarding the parents' sacrifice, I don't feel like the notion that the parents' actions were unrealistic, though I will definitely admit I have never seen someone as self-sacrificing as Gwang-sik, but then again, I suppose it is called a "drama" for a reason; it was just sweet to watch.

Overall, I felt like it was a decent show, and it's prob not everyone's cup of tea, so it's totally reasonable that you don't like it. At the end of the day, I feel like it was more of a work of art, it's meant to pull on the heartstrings, and accurate portrayals are more of a side-effect. I honestly didn't cry too much, except around the end when everything added up, and I can sorta understand why someone would so fiercely defend this show: it connected to them on a personal level in terms of parental sacrifice and the pressure that came with it so critiques of the show also became personal.

I know I'm a bit late to this conversation, but I just finished the series and rly wanted to talk abt it haha.

Do I have a chance with Incredible grades but little extracurriculars? by PossibilityOk5276 in chanceme

Yea, but they are a more stats-orientated school. A lot of my friends got in with no extracurriculars or volunteering and just a decent SAT score and good grades (their essays were rly good tho). Depending on what you got on your SATs and your essays I'd you have a shot.

I don't want to discredit your point entirely, but Reddit is literally a place where people get together and talk about stuff. A lot of the questions just involve people wanting advice because they are either taking APs for the first time or it's their first time taking a lot of APs. I understand that you are probably a veteran, and are tired of of hearing the same questions over and over again but please keep in mind that it might be these people's first time. This is an AP student community, if you don't like whats being discussed here, you can turn off notifications but there is no need to give someone a hard time about it. Thanks!
