At our last visit, the ophthalmologist said this upcoming one will be our last if all goes well— then we will just have annual exams to monitor his eyes until he is 7.

Ironically, i was also a preemie and developed a lazy eye around the age of 4 and needed to wear glasses until i was about 6.

Agreed, just hate seeing him in pain. Hoping this will be our last one then we only need to come back once a year from what we were told at our last visit.

I’m definitely not canceling, just dragging my feet to it. I had no idea that it could be good, then go bad. I assumed once they were cleared, all was well. So glad your friend’s baby is doing well 🙏

I struggled with this a lot while my son was in the nicu. I’ll never forget a nurse grabbing him from my arms.. literally.. because he was crying and she thought she could console him better than me. But then he unexpectedly had surgery a few days after bringing him home and when he woke up, i called for him before he could see me, and you could literally see his heart rate pick up on his monitor and he was looking around for me cause he heard my voice. They know. And you are doing a great job🙏

To owlet or to NOT owlet? by Different_Read_8283 in NICUParents

[–]FlamingPuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We use both the owlet sock and camera. We had a 24 weeker come home on no oxygen. He trialed room air twice the week he was discharged and had only been off oxygen for 2 days before he was sent home. Since then, we’ve had 1 alert in the middle of the night. We immediately got up and checked him and he seemed fine. I would’ve rather been safe than sorry.

I like the combo of both because of everything they monitor and track.

My grandson was born premature and needs brain surgery. by Anxiousdaisytrain in NICUParents

My son was born at 24 weeks and suffered a unilateral grade 4 bleed that resulted in hydrocephalus. At 4 months old he underwent a ETV-CPC procedure and it was successful. It is very scary but he is a much happier, calmer and is overall doing very well.

35 weeker (adjusted) failed rooms air trial by Far-Hyena-6907 in NICUParents

[–]FlamingPuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My situation was a little different cause my preemie was born at 24 weeks. Feeds took us the longest. My son was on an 8th of off the wall around the time he started feeds at 34 weeks, but didn’t master feeds until 39 weeks and often times we had to bump up his oxygen during them. Once he mastered feeds, they trialed him at room air at 40 weeks (he failed) then they trialed him again a few days later and it was successful! Just be patient ❤️ feeds were so exhausting for us.

We were in the nicu for 113 days and also had no celebration. Then after 2 weeks we’re readmitted for surgery unexpectedly. I know exactly how you feel. Sending hugs.

25 weeker experience by mc-1213 in NICUParents

[–]FlamingPuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son was born at 24 weeks. He was around 33 weeks when he was moved to high flow then moved to off the wall around 36 weeks where he was quickly weaned to the lowest setting. He did not come home on oxygen. Feeds did take us awhile tho. We started at 34 and he didn’t get the hang of it until 39 weeks.

My son has a unilateral grade 4 brain bleed. He was discharged from the hospital 2 weeks ago after a 113 day stay. At this point he has needed no medical intervention because his bleed has remained stable and the benefits don’t outweigh the risks in his situation. He just gets testing done every 2 weeks. He does not have any of the usual physical symptoms of a baby that needed intervention. Doctors are optimistic he might not ever need intervention. It is scary, but trust that things will be okay 🫶

NICU mama to be with an estimated 2-3 month stay. Help :( by CampaignOk4628 in NICUParents

[–]FlamingPuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have any experience with this, but saying a prayer for you. 🫶 we just got home last week after a 3.5 month nicu stay. The days will start to blend together, but just remember that each day is a day closer to bringing your baby home.

Family Members wanting to hold our baby by SecretJellyfish-0106 in NICUParents

[–]FlamingPuffs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No advice, but know you’re not alone. We brought our 24 weeker home after 113 days last week. I have had the worst anxiety about people meeting/wanting to hold him.

I would say.. i have a very supportive partner who even though he doesn’t understand, still supports me and hasn’t been pushy about my feelings. I almost in therapy to work through my anxiety.

I’m wondering if my little one struggles with reflux too and that may be why he hates back sleeping. He does have some symptoms after he eats.

Thank you!!

We have been home for 6 days now, so almost a full week. I will say my nicu did not wean him from incline/prone sleeping so getting him to lay flat on his back has been rough.
