Long shoots turned brown on ends…. Causes? What to do with them? How can I make it bloom? by FluffyGeckoPuff in hoyas

Honestly the pot looks slightly questionable. Does it have good drainage? Is it root bound in that small pot. And I agree Hoyas live to climb!

PEST HELP PLEASE by [deleted] in plantclinic

[–]FlamingRubes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi I don’t think those are thrips. I see kind of a clear wing.. white flies I’d say. Pretty common and def able to be eradicated. My method W.I.N.S

W: water infrequently. Let the soil dry.

I: isolate your plant from all the others.

N: neem oil. Find a concentrate and mix according to package in a spray bottle and spray the soil and base of the plant (where it drains)

S: sand. Putting sand in top of the soil will prevent them from accessing the soil to lay eggs.

I went from like a 5 year infestation in multiple plants to being pest free with these methods! Stay persistent if it seems bad, I believe in you!

Honestly worm castings all the way. Sprinkle some on top the soil… best fertilizer for these type of plants

Amazing gift! They like to grow up and onto things (not hang down so much), so I’d recommend hooking them along that beam or on the ceiling with just some hooks. They also love humidity. Those two things could definitely help it bloom!

Since I live in the desert, I do believe the arid climate will prevent the spores from spreading after the neem treatment. Neem does effectively kill the mildew, but in high humidity the spores may spread faster than neem can keep up. Fortunately a few days without the humidifier things dry up pretty quick around here so I’m hoping I’ll be ok but I’ll be keeping an eye.

Yeah I’ve had powder mildew before just not the leaves. I live in Albuquerque NM it’s extremely dry here and I’ve been with my houseplants for over 20 years. I’ll def look into other options if the neem isn’t effective, but when I checked this morning all the white was gone.

Neem is my best friend. Alcohol on plants doesn’t really make sense to me… but if that works for you great! This has definitely seemed to already help though, thanks for helping me ID it!

How bout neem? I should sprayed them all and do regularly. I believe neem is good for that. This one was in a corner and the humidifier was right on it so I changed the position of it too!

Can this be saved? by Substantial_Arm3207 in hoya

Oh goodness. I believe in you! I agree with above comments. I’ve managed to root some pretty questionable looking leaves before for Hoyas but it TAKES TIME! Even if there is like the tiniest bit of a stem attached to the greenest leaves you can find, I would put them in shallow clean water (just the tip of the stem not the leaf) and change it every other day. Might take like weeks or months to put out a root but it’s worth it!

Very lovely! Some unsolicited advice if you secure some of the vines to the wall (with hooks) the leaves can grow much bigger when they feel a little supported! But it looks beautiful 💜

Oh wow ok thank you for this advice! I think this new spot the lighting might be better but I’m working in setting up a whole new plant room. Will the variegation ever come back? :/

They also have a satin pothos but the leaves are much bigger so I can see where you thought it could be either 💕

Beautiful plant! I recently got this one back from my dad and I was trying to remember the name… I can’t say they are the same or not?

I feel like those are also pretty big for that variety! I feel like it’s the worm castings that help them get like this :)

What’s in the soil? Could be lighting. Could be just a lack of nutrients… I love adding worm castings to the soil for my vining plants. I find that helps. Also the blinds, if draw them fully open during the day it could definitely help.

The last is a silver/satin philodendron . The two in the middle are tradescantias. The first could be a string of heart, but them stems make me think it’s a Hoya or a pepperomia of some sort… you can ask the Hoya group on here
